REBECCA RUSSELL-GOOTEE
IS A POSITIVE PERSON
Meet Rebecca Russell our Positive Person this week. Rebecca was nominated by Barbara Marr for her leadership these last few months in organizing 'Dancing with Vero's Stars' set to take place this weekend. Her smile and laughter have remained constant as she planned this special event that is expected to exceed previous years' earnings. (All proceeds will go toward maternal, infant, and child health.)
Rebecca came to Vero last July and is serving as the Executive Director for Indian River County Healthy Start Coalition. She has made her career in the non profit field for thirty years and has worked in various positions all over the world. Her goal each day is to do something to make others smile. She has worked towards that goal while serving as an advocate for the homeless, victims of crime, domestic violence, sexual assault and substance abuse. Her main inspiration comes from her own mother who instilled in her the necessity to pursue and accomplish her own personal goals, while continuing to set new ones. On a broader basis, Rebecca thinks that anyone can be inspired every day by almost anyone else. There is so much to be learned from others, by observing how they express themselves, how they live, how they laugh and how they handle life's ups and downs. Rebecca passes along the advice to not "sweat the small stuff "and to "DANCE like no one is watching." Never feel that you are better or worse than anyone, - just be willing to make adjustments. Sounds like great advice to us! Thanks Rebecca for calling Vero your home and for already making such a positive impact on our community!

TURN YOUR CLOCKS FORWARD THIS WEEKEND
Do you have enough spring to spring forward? This Saturday we all need to set our clocks an hour later before we go to bed. Those of you going...YIKES. Plan ahead to lessen the sting of that lost time by taking full advantage of that extra hour. Remember that it marks the coming of summertime and longer days with more time for fun with family and dear friends. But for now, enjoy that first hour of extra sunshine by planning an outing so that you can fully take advantage of the gift this day presents. Plan a bike outing or a picnic at the beach. If you do have a lot of 'spring' left after springing forward, now is a great time to change those batteries in your smoke detectors! Happy Daylight Savings Day, FLASHERS!

SPRING IS IN THE AIR
What says spring like planting and attention to gardening? This is a quick little project that costs next to nothing and has high impact using ceiling light globes. You can even experiment with color light globes or etched clear glass ones that you can pick up almost anywhere; certainly inexpensively at Home Depot or Lowes. You might even want to be more creative and use colored lights. Simply stick the lights inside the glass globe with the plug extended and plugged into an outlet. If you don't have an outlet conveniently located you can purchase and use the battery operated strands at craft stores.

WHAT A FUNNY WORLD!
This sign was spotted at the Knoxville Zoo.
"Please be safe. Do not sit, climb or lean on zoo fences. If you fall, animals could eat you and that would make them sick." |
FLORIDA MAY OWE YOU MONEY! This is one of those fun posts that we enjoy posting every now and then. Do you have money just waiting to be claimed? Find out! You just might be surprised! It's worth checking and very easy to do. The State of Florida maintains a website that allows you to see if the state is holding lost money for you. You may not think you have lost any money, but the state currently holds over $1 billion dollars in unclaimed property from dormant accounts of banks, insurance and utility companies, as well as stock dividends and other checks never cashed. The Post Office no longer forwards mail a year after a move. If it is undeliverable or is returned to the sender, it will eventually wind up in this account. It is deposited in the state school fund and used for public education, but there is no statute of limitations and a person may claim it at anytime. One of our FLASH subscribers found over $800.00. Another found cash owed to a deceased parent from over forty years ago! So check the names of those family members you have lost as well. If you have moved, you may not have received refunds from your utility deposits. If you have married, the money may be in your previous name. The state also holds tangible property such as jewelry and coins from abandoned safety deposit boxes. All states have an unclaimed property division, so if you're new to Florida, you may want to check your previous state's records. Click on Florida's website www.fltreasurehunt.org and follow the simple directions to 'stake your claim'. Good hunting! FLASH us a post if you find anything!
