Vero Beach, FL - Ed. 2012.03.01 |
|
Valerie Watkins Publisher Vero Beach FLASH, LLC
Happy March! Did you know that today is National Peanut Butter Day? I didn't either, but I do love peanut butter, so our recipe this week features my sister's No-Bake Peanut Butter Pie. There are also a lot of other reasons to celebrate this month. Dr. Seuss's birthday is tomorrow, so add a little 'green' food coloring to your scrambled eggs in the morning and serve them with a side of 'ham'. (You'll find a bit of SAM I AM trivia in a post below.) And speaking of green, it's not too soon to start planning a St. Patrick's Day party on the 17th. March 20th, the official first day of Spring is less than 3 weeks away so you'll also find some special ideas for Spring in this issue. And remember that there is no school tomorrow for our local public schools. You might just want to take one of the day trips we suggest in this issue. ENJOY!

OFF THE BEATEN PATH - FLORIDA DAY TRIPS
Tomorrow, March 2nd, is a school holiday and there's another one coming up on Friday, March 30th and Spring Break is just around the corner too. You might want to take advantage of these days of by making a short 'drive' trip to explore parts of Florida you haven't seen. Many drives are just a few hours away from Vero.
SPOOK HILL
One of our favorites is SPOOK HILL. Located near Gainesville, if you're a U. of F. alumn, you know about this one where your car rolls backwards UP a hill. To watch a video of the action at SPOOK HILL and get directions, Click Here.
FLORIDA'S SPRINGS
You could spend days exploring the 35 natural springs in Florida. Many offer camping and other lodging along with all types of water sports including swimming, snorkeling, and kayaking, as well as nature walks and hiking. A special favorite of our Flash family is DeLeon Springs. Before your swim, visit The Old Sugar Mill restaurant where you can cook pancakes on the grill that's built right into your table. The restaurant furnishes pitchers of the batter and you can add blueberries, pecans and other goodies to the mix. This is an extremely popular spot, so avoid the crowds by going early in the day to get parking. For a map and descriptions of all the springs, Click Here.

SOME DR. SEUSS TRIVIA
Green Eggs and Ham is one of Seuss's "Beginner Books", written in a very simple vocabulary for beginning readers. The vocabulary of the text consists of just 50 different words and was the result of a bet between Seuss and Bennett Cerf (Dr. Seuss's publisher) that Seuss (after completing The Cat in the Hat using 225 words) could not complete an entire book using so few words. Dr. Seuss won. The 50 are: a, am, and, anywhere, are, be, boat, box, car, could, dark, do, eat, eggs, fox, goat, good, green, ham, here, house, I, if, in, let, like, may, me, mouse, not, on, or, rain, Sam, say, see, so, thank, that, the, them, there, they, train, tree, try, will, with, would, you.

CAN'T LOSE WEIGHT?
According to Dr. Mehmet Oz and Dr. Michael Roizsen, if you can't lose weight, chances are that you can blame two hormones: 'ghrelin', which says, "Time to eat," and 'leptin', which says, "Enough. You're full." To learn how to balance the two, Click Here. |
This is a great little list that our FLASHERS can tweak and say to anyone to make that person feel special, worthy, happy, important. It reminds me somewhat of the repeated one liner from the movie 'The Help': "You is kind, you is smart, you is important!" Oh, the power of words!...Choose them wisely and make them positive! |

GROW INDOOR TULIPSStep 1 - Fill a glass container about 1/3 of the way with glass marbles or decorative rocks. Clear glass will enable you to watch the roots develop. Step 2 - Set the tulip bulb on top of the marbles or stones; pointed end UP. Add a few more marbles or rocks so that the tulip bulb is surrounded but not covered (think support). Step 3 - Pour fresh water into the container. The water shouldn't touch the bulb, but it should be very close, so that the roots will grow into it.

SPRING FASHION TIP
Neon colors are dominating the runways this spring. A lot of heat has been added to the usual pastels. Think Hot Pink, Bright Blue, Lime Green, Brighter Yellow ...well, you get the idea! For a complete look at the styles and colors, you can see them at the MARIE CLAIRE magazine website. Click Here

INVESTMENT TIP
Billy Rose was a producer and lyricist who wrote the lyrics to many hits in the 40's and 50's. Favorites include IT'S ONLY A PAPER MOON, I'VE GOT A FEELING I'M FALLING and THAT OLD GANG OF MINE. He was also a savvy investor with a sense of humor and we love his advice: "Never invest in anything that eats or needs repainting!" Investment strategist, Mark Skousen, PhD, translates this to mean that any investment that depends on repeated infusions of cash probably isn't as good as it may seem at first. As an example, he mentions that those who are tempted to buy bargain priced homes in this down real estate market and rent them should think twice. He suggests they talk to some other landlords to fully realize what they might be getting themselves into. He didn't clarify what Rose meant by "eat," but we think Billy may have owned a racehorse. Not every horse wins the Kentucky Derby, but in addition to an original investment in the thousands, the owners are responsible for the feeding and medical care for its lifetime....and the horse can live 25-30 years!

CANCER RESEARCH WITH CITRUS
There is an e-mail circulating that lemons are a "cure" for cancer. Be Cautious!...There is research being done with citrus in general as an anti-carcinogen and it does show promise, but there is nothing definitive yet. Orange juice might become a cocktail to prevent or even stop the deadly disease in humans. Orange juice and other citrus contain potent natural compounds - limonoids - which showed dramatic results in killing certain cancer cells. Limonoids are unique to citrus in that they are not found in any other fruits or vegetables. (Since we live in the 'Citrus Capital' of the country, it wouldn't hurt to add more citrus to your diet!) Research has being done at our own University of Florida, as well as the University of California and Texas A&M University. The SCIENCE DAILY website has a lengthy article on the subject. If you want to learn more, CLICK HERE. There is also a link that lists the 5 benefits of drinking lemon water.
