editor's note poka-dot

This week we have a couple of notable days. Yesterday, Ash Wednesday, began the season of Lent. While it used to be considered primarily a Catholic observation, it is now recognized by many other Christian denominations as well. Lent is the Christian season that prepares us for Easter. The purpose of Lent is to focus on Jesus Christ; His suffering and sacrifice, as well as his life, death, burial and resurrection.  It is also a time of self-examination and penitence, demonstrated by 'self-denial' during the 40 days leading up to Easter. (Sundays are not included in the count) Under the heading of "self denial," you will hear many people mentioning what they "gave up" for Lent.  I guess it's not surprising that one of the most frequent things mentioned is chocolate! (It's a good thing that Valentine's Day is over.)

Our next notable day is, Wednesday, February 29th. This very special 29th day of February usually occurs every four years and is called leap day. This day is added to the calendar in leap years as a corrective measure, because the earth does not orbit around the sun in precisely 365 days. Leap Day has also become known as "Sadie Hawkins' Day." For the background on this fun 'pseudo-holiday' see the post below.

Other less notable, but important days for our community can be found on our new 'hard copy' FLASH CALENDAR. Our March calendar will be available next Tuesday and can be picked up for free at: Chamber of Commerce, Duncan Donuts, Drs. Conway & Bucaj, IRC Libraries, Jungle Club, Marks at the Pointe, Pizoodles, Starbucks, The Book Center, and Treasury Antiques.  Be sure to pick up your free copy!

DARLENE FORAGE

IS A POSITIVE PERSON

Anyone in the volunteer and nonprofit sector of our community has inevitably come across Darlene Forage. Darlene came to Vero Beach in 2006 and started volunteering immediately. Her involvement has been extensive and includes volunteering with United Way, Youth Guidance, Big Brothers Big Sisters and Plumbago. Darlene can't imagine a world where she was not involved and helping others. She is motivated by the fact that she truly enjoys helping others and feels like the rewards are endless and come back two fold. Working side by side with other volunteers is a great inspiration and their acts of kindness are truly a "gift that keeps on giving."

There is little doubt that Darlene feels this to her very core.  That deep sense of volunteerism and helping others is what led her to create the non profit, Plumbago, in 2008. She considers this her greatest accomplishment and she currently serves as the Executive Director. Knowing what Plumbago accomplishes for our community one can understand why Darlene considers it such an achievement. Over the past year and a half Plumbago has placed over four thousand volunteers throughout the community, celebrated sixty volunteers through special events, and helped raise thousands of dollars for various nonprofit organizations. Darlene credits the Cultural Council and more specifically, Mary Jayne Kelly, as having inspired her and the creation of Plumbago.

When Darlene does find some time to relax, she enjoys, reading, mentoring, spending time with her husband, Paul, and playing 'Angry Birds!'   Darlene we are glad you called Vero your home 6 years ago.  You are undoubtedly proof of how quickly a person can have a positive impact! You are not only a Positive Person you are amazing and we thank you for all that you have done!

SADIE HAWKINS' DAY
.
An American folk event, Sadie Hawkins Day originated in Al Capp's classic hillbilly comic strip LIL' ABNER which ran in newspapers across the country from 1934 -1978. In the comic, Sadie Hawkins was the "homeliest gal in all 'them hills'. She grew frantic waiting for a suitor, so when she reached the age of 35, her father called together all the unmarried men in the town and declared it "Sadie Hawkins Day". He decreed a foot race with Sadie in hot pursuit of the town's eligible bachelors with matrimony as the consequence. The town spinsters thought that this was such a good idea, they made Sadie Hawkins Day a mandatory yearly event. If a woman caught a bachelor and dragged him, kicking and screaming, across the finish line before sundown, by law he had to marry her! This inspired the February 'Sadie Hawkins Dances' where the girls ask the boys out.

INTERESTING FACT...WOW!

According to a U.S. Depatment of Agriculture report, a child born in 2010 will cost the parents about $226,902 over the next 17 years, and this doesn't include the cost of college! The biggest increase in expenses were child care, health care and transportation.

~ CLEAN YOUR DISHWASHER ~
GET RID OF SMELL AND/OR STANDING WATER

Well, there are a lot of ways your dishwasher can collect gunk that needs to be cleaned. Tiny bits of food, grease and soap scum can cling together and get deposited in corners of the dishwasher. After a time, they can not only make your dishwasher look and smell bad...but decrease its' efficiency. Follow these four easy steps to clean your dishwasher.

1) FiRST....pull the bottom rack out and examine the drain area and make sure there are no hard chunks that can plug the drain, cause damage to the pump or scratch dishes.
2) Second.....Place a dishwasher-safe cup (Glass measuring cup) filled with
plain white vinegar on the top rack of the dishwasher. Using the hottest water available, run the dishwasher through a cycle - except for the cup of vinegar, the dishwasher needs to be empty. The vinegar will help to wash away the loose, greasy grime, sanitizes, and helps remove the musty odor.
3) Third.....After using the vinegar to sanitize the inside of the dishwasher, sprinkle a cupful of baking soda around the bottom of the tub and run it through a short but complete cycle, again using the hottest water. The baking soda will help freshen the smell of the dishwasher as well as brighten up the look of the inside of your appliance by removing stains.

(OPTIONAL):
If you have problems with mold and mildew, add ½-1 cup bleach in the bottom of the dishwasher and run a full cycle. WARNING: DO NOT USE BLEACH IN YOUR DISHWASHER IF YOU HAVE A STAINLESS STEEL INTERIOR).

HEALTH TIP
SAVE YOUR TOOTH ENAMEL
As you age, your tooth enamel erodes and your 'pearly whites' aren't so pearly or white anymore. The REAL AGE website gives these tips to preserve tooth enamel with a slide show of foods and drinks to avoid. One tip among others that we didn't know is to use a straw when you are drinking acidic drinks to keep the beverage from being in your mouth for so long. VIDEO OF THE WEEK

PYTHON EATS ALIGATOR

We've been hearing a lot about the increasing number of pythons in the Everglades becoming a danger. In 1979, wildlife officials were surprised to find a Burmese Python -- a constrictor that can grow up to 20 feet long and weigh 200 pounds -- living in the  Everglades National Park. Since then, they've continued to find them and now best estimates put the park's present python population between 30,000-100,000. It's believed this all started when people, tired of their pet snakes, released them in the Glades and they began to multiply. (Pythons can lay as many as 30 eggs at a time!) Warning: This video is a very graphic image of a python and aligator encounter. Click Here

A SOMEWHAT STRANGE SAVINGS TIP
HOMEMADE VACUUM SEALER
Shrink-wrapping keeps food fresh up to five times longer than foil or plastic wrap, but the commercial vacuum sealers can be expensive. To create your own, zip a plastic bag almost closed, then insert a straw and suck out the air. Do not use this method for raw meats or poultry.
