ROSE SPYTEK
IS A POSITIVE PERSON
Our Positive Person this week has lived in Vero Beach for 22 years and has been making a positive impact on our community for quite a while. It didn't take her long to get involved and it certainly doesn't take others long to see that Rose is a born leader. She has been elected and served in many leadership positions for many of our charitable organizations including: past president of Indian River Jaycees, Secretary and Treasurer for the Homeless Assistance Center, Board member and Secretary for Habitat for Humanity, Past President of the Republican Women, Past president of Heritage Center, Past President of the Taxpayers' Association, and she is a currently serving as a board member for CASTLE. WOW! When asked what motivates her to give so much of herself to our community, Rose answered, "People who volunteer know that you always get more than you give by being involved. I really enjoy working with like-minded people toward a common goal of improving our community." When Rose isn't working as Branch Manager and Certified Financial Planner for the Raymond James office on 14th Avenue, she is enjoying the little things in life. Helping others is obviously at the top of that list, but cooking, reading, taking walks with her two mini dachshunds also brings her much pleasure. She also enjoys traveling with her husband to whom she will be married for 10 years this October.
Advice from Rose: Life isn't always easy, but if we all try to appreciate the good things about our life ... we can all be happy! Work through the tough times and keep your chin up. Tough times never last, but tough people do! Rose considers her greatest personal accomplishment to be working her way through college and graduating from the University of Texas in Austin. One fun fact that many may not know about Rose is that she managed the largest nightclub (at that time) in Austin.
Thanks for all that you have done to give back to our community. There is little doubt that you have touched many in a very positive way and FLASH is honored to give you a public thank you and pat on the back! We also thank Natalie Fincik who took a moment to nominate Rose. She stated that "Rose is sincerely one of the best people I know. It's really uplifting to know someone that cares so much about others." We agree! THANKS Rose!

 Kevin Bozeman
Kevin Bozeman uses his high-energy act and knack for the obvious to give a unique perspective on traveling, dating, social and controversial issues. No subject is sacred from his hilarious truths. He is quickly working his way to the top headlining comedy clubs throughout the country. Kevin has appeared on HBO, Comedy Central's "Comics Come Home," "Premium Blend," "Star Search," and has opened for Aretha Franklin.
-John Wynn - John Wynn - An official 2011 Laughing Skull Competition Selection and a NBC "Stand-Up for Diversity" semi-finalist, this college professor turned comedian has harvested yuk-yuks from across the country and from various clubs in South Florida. John Wynn asks audiences to "think outside the box" and look at life through his charmingly skewed perspective. Raised in the small town of Waco, Texas, John discovered that the local kids loved to beat up on Asians... (i.e., John Wynn). So, he decided the best way to stay alive was to make people laugh. John has quickly worked his way up in the South Florida comedy scene. Most recently, he was a finalist for the Hollywood to Hollywood contest and he performed at the 2011 Laughing Skull Festival. PAR-TAY WITH YOUR OSCAR FRIENDS
PLAN NOW FOR AN OSCAR PARTY ON FEB 26

Have you been going to the movies practically every weekend, eaten too many bags of popcorn, and now you can't wait for 'Oscar Night?' Well, make it an even more enjoyable night by inviting your friends over for an Oscar party. You can roll out your own red carpet...a red paper table cloth works great, order your Oscar
party favors and decorations, and plan some Academy Award themed party games with all your friends as you critique and applaud your favorite actors and actresses in your own game of charades! You can also plan for Oscar Karaoke. You can click on Oscar Trivia to get some fun facts for your party. A favorite of every Oscar party is the 'Oscar Pool.' It is always fun, popular and super easy when you follow these easy steps.
1. Doing a pool is easy! Just go online to Oscar Nominees and print up lists of all the categories and nominees.
2. While you and your friends are watching the red carpet interviews, everyone has to check off who they think will win in each category.
3. Then, each guest puts a small amount of money into the pool (we suggest $5), and whoever has the most correct predictions wins the money. ENJOY!

THAT'S CLEVER This is an easy-to-make votive holder. 1) Get two cans one smaller than the other. Tuna cans work well. 2) Clip on clothes pins to the can. (Paint them to color coordinate with a themed party or decor.) 3) Place a small glass votive inside 4) ENJOY!

GET RID OF ANTS
Directions:
Mix the sugar and Boric Acid well.
1) Add the warm water slowly, mixing all the while so it won't be too
lumpy.
2) Store in a jar.
3) When ready to use, put cotton into the top of a jar lid to fill it, and
then saturate the cotton to the top.
4) Place where you want it; make several if you need it.
5) Will keep for a long while.
NOTE: I usually drip a drop or two over the edge of the lid to rest on the counter so they will find it sooner. It sometimes takes a little while for them to find it, but find it they will. When they do, leave them alone. The ants will hang over the edge of the lid and drink, drink, drink, and then take it back to the nest. Almost overnight, they will be gone.
*Boric Acid can be found at most drugstores and hardware stores.

AN ODD DIET TIP!
People who have tried this swear it works! After you have eaten your fill (or think that it's time to stop), cross your knife and fork in and "X" on your plate with the handles touching the remaining food. The "X" sends a subliminal "no" message to the brain and the dirty handles will stop you from mindless munching!
|
|
MONEY TIP
With tax time just around the corner, you will find this information from
CPA Martin S. Kaplan of New York interesting. According to the IRS, if you report income of under $200,000, you have only a 1% chance of being audited. Over $200,000 and up to $1 million, the chance increases to 3%, and over that it jumps up to over 6%. In case you are audited, make sure you can justify any bank deposits (like an inheritance or a gift) over the taxable income you reported. An agent will probably examine your bank records as well as those of your children.

FUN INDIVIDUAL 'REAL' APPLE PIES'

MAKES 4 PIES
INGREDIENTS
5-6 Green Granny Smith Apples (make sure they stand up on their own)
1-teaspoon cinnamon
1/4 cup sugar
1 Tablespoon brown sugar
Pie Crust - premade or home-made
Step 1: Cut off the top of 4 apples and discard. Remove the inside of each apple with a spoon or melon baller very carefully, as to not puncture the peel. If you are the most talented apple excavator...save as much as you can for step-2. Step 2: Remove skin from remaining apple(s) and slice very thinly. These apple pieces will give you the additional filling needed to fill the four apples you are baking. Step 3: Mix sliced apples with sugars and cinnamon in a bowl and then scoop into apples. If you prefer more or less cinnamon make adjustments as desired. Same goes for the sugar. Scoop sliced apples into hollow apples. Step 4: Roll out pie crust and slice into 1/4 inch strips. You can also add a strip of pastry inside the top of the apple almost like a liner to add a little more texture/sweetness to the pie. Cover the top of the apple in a lattice pattern with pie crust strips. Step 5: Place apples in an 8×8 pan. Add just enough water to the cover the bottom of the pan. Cover with foil and bake for 20-25 minutes. Remove foil and bake for an additional 20 minutes or until crust is golden brown and sliced apples are soft.
