Vero Beach FLASH, LLC

This week's FLASH is our Valentine issue and we packed it with fun information. I just love Valentine's Day and I always have. It's a day that is right in sync with our mission at FLASH, which so simply put, is to be nice to others and let them know we care.  You will never find any sad or depressing news in FLASH. Quite the contrary, we want to be something that brings a smile to your face  each week and exciting butterflies to your stomach; much like the anticipation you felt in elementary school as you sat at your desk with your little home-made box waiting to be filled with wonderful little messages from classmates. Whose little Valentine's would you find inside and what message would be revealed? Well, we hope that today's FLASH is the first of wonderful little gifts that you receive this Valentine's Day. I think it is wonderful to have a day that reminds us to be kind and to tell others that we care about them. I challenge all of our FLASHERS to work towards that goal more than once a year. Here's an idea... why not set aside 30 minutes every week to actually 'put it in writing.'  Send a special little 'Valentine kind' of note to someone to let them know they are appreciated, admired, thought of, liked, loved or hey even 'cool' or the 'cat's meow'. Oh by the way FLASHERS all of the above is quite true when it comes to you and we want to let you know that we like you a 'waffle' lot! HAPPY VALENTINE'S DAY!

                                        VALENTINE'S DAY TRIVIA

beating heartAccording to the Greeting Card Association, an estimated 1 billion Valentine's Day cards are sent each year, making Valentine's Day the second only to Christmas as the largest card-sending holiday of the year.  ...And, ladies, it probably comes as no surprise that women purchase approximately 85 percent of all valentines!

BETH GEYER

IS A POSITIVE PERSON

Each week we try to spotlight a positive person. These are individuals that we  believe contribute to our community in a special way, making it a better place for all of us. Some etch out time each week to give back and to help others in some way. Then there are those who have chosen the nonprofit field and who have made it their profession to serve others. Such is the case this week with Beth Geyer. Funny thing, when we followed up with Beth on the nomination that we received, she told us that she reads FLASH every week (thank you Beth) and that she just did not feel 'worthy' of the 'Positive Person' title. You would be surprised how often we hear that at FLASH. My message to Beth was a simple one. If someone thought enough of you to nominate you then chances are you are most deserving and your humble attitude makes you even more deserving. So, it is my honor to spotlight Beth Geyer this week. Beth was nominated by a co-worker at Childcare Resources where she is the Director of the Education Center. She has been married to her husband, Frank, for 25 years this coming May. She moved from Missouri to Vero Beach in June of 2010 to take the position as Director of the Education Center and to be closer to family. Her nomination stated, "Beth is passionate about early childhood education, and works tirelessly to make the Education Center a community for the children, families, teachers and volunteers. Beth always has a smile on her face and treats everyone with warmth, kindness, and respect. She is truly an unspoken hero and deserves much more recognition than we could ever give her!"  I ask, what more can be expected as a Positive Person than that?  Thank you Beth for all that you do and for making the gift of serving others something you do on a daily basis! You are greatly appreciated and are most definitely a 'Positive Person.'

Happy Valentine's Day!

VALENTINE'S DAY BREAKFAST

HEART-IN-THE HOLE

Surprise your Valentine with this! Simply cutting out a shape from a piece of bread turns a breakfast standard into a special treat for Valentine's day and it only takes 7 minutes to prepare!

Ingredients

1 slice bread, 1 large egg, and 1 tsp. butter,

Cooking Instructions

  1. Using a 3-inch heart-shaped cutter, or sharp knife, cut heart out of the center of the bread.
  2. In a medium non-stick skillet over medium low heat melt butter. Place the bread, heart stencil and cut-out heart, in the skillet. Cook about 2 minutes, or until bread is toasted on one side.
  3. Flip bread over and add egg to the center of the cut-out heart. Cover skillet. Cook 2-3 minutes, or until white of egg is cooked.
  4. Salt and pepper to taste. Spread heart cut-out with jam, if desired.

    Tips & Tricks

If your skillet is too small to fit the stencil and cut-out heart bread pieces so that they lay flat, the cut-out can be toasted in a toaster.

If sunny-side up eggs are not to your liking, then once the egg is set turn over the filled stencil and cook about 1 minute more, or until the yolk is set.
