Valerie Watkins Publisher Vero Beach FLASH, LLC
Team FLASH has been busy working on a few new things that we are eager to share with our FLASHERS. First, you will be noticing a few changes in our weekly newsletter over the next couple of weeks. We have changed to a crisper cleaner and easier to read look. Let us know how you like it. Secondly, we will start including a Social FLASH section that will depict pictures of those seen 'around town.' All of our FLASHERS and organizations are welcome to submit pictures taken at community events. (Click button in post below) This is a courtesy and there is no charge to be included. Lastly, we are most excited about our printed Monthly Community Calendar that we will be dispersing at no charge throughout the community for the first time in February. This will be a complete listing of local events and we encourage our FLASHERS to submit events for the calendar. (All non profit listings are always free.) We have a couple of advertising spots left. If you are interested, please Click Here. We sincerely thank ALL of our FLASHERS for making FLASH the huge success that it is. We are eternally grateful and we hope you like our new look and our new additions. ENJOY!

LIZ SANTIAGO
IS A POSITIVE PERSON
Liz Santiago is our first 'Positive Person' of 2012. She has lived in the Sebastian area since 1989 and was recently widowed after being married to her husband, Al, for 27 years. Together they have two sons, John 29 and Michael 26. Liz has a heart for volunteering and has been doing so for eleven years in our community. Her involvement has included Habitat for Humanity for 8 years, Youth in Action for 8 years, Dasie Hope 4 years, Relay for Life 10 years as well as countless other volunteer positions. She is an active member of Kiwanis and was recognized and received their award for 'Outstanding Service to Community.' She also received the Indian River County School District Golden Apple and K Pennies for Patients Recognition.
Liz has a strong faith and is motivated by her gratitude for all of God's blessings. In turn she loves to tithe 10% of her time reaching out to those in need. She keeps an eye out for those in our community who need a smile, hug or words of encouragement. She encourages all of us to do the same. As a Positive Person it is no wonder that Liz considers leaving McGraw Hill Publishing Company in NYC as her biggest accomplishment so that she could go to work in public education and have an impact on the lives of many children.
Working in public education inspired Liz to help students make positive changes in their life. "It is rewarding to see a student who struggles academically or emotionally make strides to reach his/her goal. Indian River Charter High School is a high performing school where students receive an individualized education plan that helps them reach their potential. I am grateful to be part of this institution."
Well Liz, we are incredibly grateful for you and your unselfish spirit. Thank you for all that you do for our community! You are a true inspiration!

Still feeling the freshness of the new year? FLASH hopes so and hopes that all of your resolutions are still on target. Here is a little inspirational saying that you can write out and keep in a prominent place to help keep you on track and inspired in 2012. "The past is engraved in stone, but the future is whatever you make it!" Go make it great FLASHERS! As you make the new year a remarkable one, there is something else to keep in mind. In a study from Florida State University, 49% of the people in the survey responded that the recession has taught them to value people over things. What a valuable lesson and most definitely a silver lining to the difficult times of the past few years. Remember to cherish those you love...They are truly what matters most!
|
There will be no school for students tomorrow, Jan. 13th for a Teacher Workday and for everyone on Monday, Jan.16th in honor of Martin Luther King Day. Remember that Monday is a Federal Holiday so all banks and government buildings will be closed. Plan something fun and enjoy your long weekend!

CHANGES IN AUTO INSURANCE?
If one of the bills that arrive in January is a renewal of your automobile insurance policy, check it carefully! One of our FLASH team was shocked to learn that her car insurance policy had increased almost $400 for this year even though she has had no accidents or traffic tickets in many years. When she called to inquire about the increase, she was told that it was due to rising medical costs in Florida and there was nothing the agency could do about it. She's now requesting quotes from other companies.

COOKED TOMATOES BETTER FOR YOU THAN RAW
You have probably heard that the healthiest way to eat fruits and vegetables is to eat them raw. The exception is the red tomato. Cooking actually increases its level of lycopene -- an antioxidant thought to help prevent certain types of cancer, vision loss, and heart disease. According to the REAL AGE website, both men and women who consumed at least 25 milligrams of lycopene every day for several weeks lowered their LDL cholesterol levels by 10%, - the kind of improvement you'd expect to see in someone taking a statin medication for a similar amount of time. That's about as much lycopene as you'd find in a mere half-cup serving of tomato sauce. The best way to get the positive effects is by eating 10 tablespoons of tomato sauce a week. Stewed tomatoes, tomato juice and even catsup are other sources of lycopene.
