PLEASE FLY YOUR FLAG TODAY
Today marks the 70th anniversary of the beginning of World War II when President Roosevelt went on the radio to tell the country that he was officially declaring war on the Japanese empire. He proclaimed the attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7th, as "a date that would live in infamy."  This year, the Department of Veterans' Affairs estimated that there are still 2,079,000 veterans of that war still alive today. Let's show our gratitude to them by flying our flag in their honor and in honor of the 2,350 who lost their lives in the attack. CLICK HERE to view Roosevelt's entire speech.
                                  AN ANONYMOUS DONOR

One thing that always restores my faith in mankind is when I hear of anonymous donors who give so generously to help others.  Several such incidences have caught my attention this week. Several on a National level (see post below) and one that is close to home here in Vero.  An anonymous donor gave $100,000 to the Indian River Community Foundation's unrestricted grants program. This unknown philanthropic couple has been the lead donors to the fund for the past three years which has allowed for critical and time sensitive community issues to be addressed. To find out more about the Indian River County Foundation and the contributions they have made you can

The Indian River Community Foundation is a nonprofit organization that provides donors with flexible philanthropic tools to achieve their current and long-term charitable giving goals. The Foundation currently manages over $9 million in charitable assets, the majority of which are held in donor advised funds. The unrestricted fund is open to anyone interested in pooling their funds with other philanthropists looking for immediate impact and targeted solutions through their charitable giving.          UNUSUAL 'RED KETTLE' DONATION
.
Other interesting donations so far this year, reported on the Salvation Army Blog:

The Salvation Army's annual Red Kettle Campaign, which posts bell ringers outside stores and on street corners all over the United States, has seen some generous -- and unusual -- donations this year.

1) In the Spokane, Wash., area, bell ringers reported finding a diamond ring, worth $5,000, wrapped in a dollar bill.

2) A 1-ounce silver coin wrapped in a note explaining that the donor had held onto it for 20 years, and though unemployed for more than a year, facing foreclosure and bankruptcy, "I still know there are families in worse shape," the donor wrote.

3) In the Chicago area, bell ringers found their first gold coin of the season on Dec. 2 -- a 1-ounce solid gold South African Krugerrand worth almost $1,800, The Beacon-News reported.

4) For the seventh straight year, an anonymous donor has dropped a $20 Liberty Eagle gold coin in one of The Salvation Army's red kettles. The coin was anonymously given and wrapped in a note that reads, "In loving memory of Mimi. In past years the coin has been valued at approximately $1,400.

5) Thirty-six $100 bills in a red kettle in Chattanooga, Tenn., as reported by CBN News

6)  Gold wedding bands in Indiana

We have featured this site before, but thought this was a great time to run it again. With the holidays in full gear many are being tempted by many of the scrumptious foods that ring in the season with all of the merriment! This site is great because you can click on any of your 'troubled body part' and you will be able to view different exercises that target that specific area. ...AND JUST FOR YOU GUYS

We thought you might enjoy the excerpt below about men's fashions from the Editor of the first issue of ESQUIRE MAGAZINE in 1933. We believe it' remains true today!

"Esquire aims to be, among other things, a fashion guide for men, but it never intends to become, by any possible stretch of the imagination, a primer for fops. We have been studying men, and men's clothes, for many years, and we have come to the conclusion that the average American male has too much inherent horse sense to be bothered very much by a lot of dress rules that nobody but a gigolo could possibly find either time or inclination to observe. On the other hand, we feel that men have long since ceased to believe that there is anything effeminate or essentially unbusinesslike about devoting a little care and thought and study to the selection of clothes."

READ PRODUCT RATINGS BEFORE YOU BUY!

Whether you plan to buy a product online or at a store, it  might save you money to read the product ratings online. Just put the product name in the search bar followed by the word "reviews". (When you get to the site, if it doesn't come up automatically, click on the "reviews" or "ratings".) This can be especially helpful on the more expensive items. For example, this year's new kitchen gadget is the T-Fal Actifry available at many local stores. It promises low fat frying at a price around $250. Customer reviews show that many loved it, but others didn't and they tell you why. You can check ratings on almost anything including: computers, large appliances and even cars.
 VIDEO OF THE WEEK
FRANK SINATRA'S BIRTHDAY

It's hard to believe that if Frank Sinatra had lived, he would be turning 96 this coming Monday, Dec. 12th! This video was filmed at a concert on one of his previous birthday's when he invited  a surprised Liza Minelli to join him onstage for an impromptu duet. (If it looks rehearsed, that's because they had actually performed the number together a few years earlier.) CLICK HERE

This would be great to fix the night before for a special holiday breakfast!

  • Butter, for pan
  • 8 large eggs
  • 2 cups half-and-half
  • 1 cup milk

  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • Dash salt

Directions
Slice French bread into 20 slices, 1-inch thick each. (Use any extra bread for garlic toast or bread crumbs). Arrange slices in a generously buttered 9 by 13-inch flat baking dish in 2 rows, overlapping the slices.

  • 1 cup chopped pecans
  • 2 tablespoons light corn syrup
