   WELCOME!
Team FLASH hopes that everyone had an incredible Thanksgiving and that many blessings were counted yesterday! Now we head towards the Christmas season. We hope that family peace was maintained throughout the Thanksgiving dinner. Often the holidays can bring on stress when family issues pop up. We know our FLASHERS are the most courteous of folks...But... just in case 'someone else' brings up a topic...here is a list of ten things to avoid according to Cafe~Mom. Now you know and you can be the one to divert such topics and maintain family peace throughout the holidays.

  1. Long-Standing Sibling Spats. The truth is, if you and your sister haven't been able to resolve that little misunderstanding involving your high school boyfriend for the past 20 years, you're not going to suddenly figure things now. Let it go......
  2. Divorces/Separations/Affairs. Mashed potatoes and gravy sprinkled with bitterness and resentment? Pass the antacids, please. At the first mention of how your family got so broken to begin with, change the subject. Immediately.
  3. Money. The road to holiday hell is paved with talk about how much money so-and-so loaned so-and-so and how little money so-and-so loaned that other so-and-so and I guess so-and-so just loves so-and-so more! Good times.
  4. Substance Abuse. Here's how the script for this one goes, just in case you don't already have it memorized ... Family Member #1: Another glass of wine? Don't you think you've had enough? Family Member #2: What do you know about it? You're the reason why I drink in the first place! Yeah, just don't even go there.
  5. Failed Expectations. Either your sister wasted her talent as a classical pianist or you could have gone to Harvard if you just applied yourself ... y'all disappointed your parents in one way or another. When they start dropping hints, volunteer to clear the table.
  6. Physical Appearance. Maybe you put on a little weight. Maybe you lost too much weight. Maybe you should really do something about that hair. Don't justify the criticism with a response. Have another glass of wine (see #4, Substance Abuse).
  7. You Never. As in, you never came to my softball games. You never told me you loved me. You never tucked me in at night. You never blah, blah, blah. I know, I know -- they never did. But why bring it up now?
  8. Big Disasters. Remember that time Bobby tried to build a rocket in the basement and he almost blew it up. If so...try to forget it!
  9. Religion. It doesn't matter what -- if any -- religion you were raised in; if your adult beliefs (or those of your siblings) differ from the creed your parents, aunts, uncles, and/or grandparents believe in, step away from the topic!
  10. Politics. Again....if they differ from those of other family members... Step far - far - far away from the topic! This one will never have a happy ending!

RON DAVIDSON

IS A POSITIVE PERSON

Ron Davidson...AKA Santa Clause is our Positive Person this week. Ron is married to Lisa and together they own and operate Shells and Things on Ocean Drive.  Ron has been volunteering in our community for three years and will be serving as Santa for the second time in this year's Holiday Parade. Those who know Ron know that he has a heart of gold and as large as the original Santa! He has a true love for children and in his own words, "Wishes he could help/save them all." He operates on the Golden Rule and was raised with an awareness and respect for others. He enjoys volunteering and knows that no matter how bad life can get sometimes; there is always someone with worse hardships. In addition to serving as Santa, Ron has volunteered for the last several years at the Hibiscus Festival, the Festival of trees, and Girls Night Out benefiting the Hibiscus Center. Ron also enjoys art, music, and spending time with his family. He counts his four children as his greatest accomplishment and he enjoys researching his family's genealogy.

Last year, when Ron was asked to be the new Santa, it was the beginning of a dream come true. The entire dream is to be financially able to start "Santa's Workshop"; a non-profit that would allow Ron to be Santa all year long helping orphanages, children's homes, and disadvantaged children. This effort would not just give children a Christmas, but would help give them a birthday, make it possible for them to go to their prom and help them get ready for college and raise funding to make it a reality. That dream certainly envelopes the true essence of Santa and Ron's wish to let every child know that he is cared for whether they have a family and/or parents or not is a noble effort. Team FLASH believes that Ron will make this happen. His favorite quote is one by Henry Ford, "Whether you think you can or think you can't, you're right!"

Below you will read about Small Business Saturday.  As I write this article I am reminded of the impact that concept actually can have. Each one of us can make a difference in our community by supporting and shopping at our privately owned and operated specialty shops.  As a community I believe we have an obligation to connect an individual with their business and I encourage you all to stop into Shells and Things and say a hearty Ho-Ho-Ho to Ron and his wife.  Doing business with them makes it possible for them to do more for our community. They already donate to many auctions that support so many different local charitable efforts. Who knows... In a couple of years FLASH just might be thanking you all for making Santa's Workshop a reality! Thanks Ron for your positive personality and for making a difference in our community! We know you are on the "Good List!" :)

YOUTH GUIDANCE CHRISTMAS PARTY

VOLUNTEERS NEEDED!

December 17th

10:00-12:00

Over 100 volunteers are needed to share in the holiday spirit and celebrate with the youngsters at the Youth Guidance Annual Christmas Party.  The festivities will be held December 17, 10am-12pm, at the St. Helen's Catholic Church Gym, 2000 20th Avenue, Vero Beach.  Children will have a joyous time making holiday themed crafts, playing games, enjoying friendship and refreshments during this celebration.

HANGING  HOUSE LIGHTS

You might want to consider using gutter clips when hanging lights on your house. These clips are incredibly easy to use. All you need to do is hook them on the gutter and then onto the lights. The best part is you don't have to ruin your house by putting nails into it.  You should only consider putting nails into your house if you want to hang lights over your window or door frame, as gutter hooks probably won't work. There should be Christmas light hooks in any department or mass merchandiser store. There are temporary plastic hooks, but these are known to come off very easily. There are tons of different clips, nails, and hooks that are offered. You should shop around in your local home improvement store to see which method of hanging your lights will work for you.  Once the holidays are over, make sure to store your lights and hooks in a proper place where they will not be damaged. One tip is to wind them around a paper towel holder and store in a plastic container.

TOW TO GO

AAA and Budweiser have partnered since 1998 to safely return those who have indulged in holiday spirits to their homes and to remove intoxicated drivers from our roads. This is a great program that you might want to share with anyone that you think might overindulge at some point this holiday season. This service is available for free now until January 2nd!

  • FREE and open to both AAA members and non-members (100% confidential)
  • Call 1-800-AAA-HELP - the call will be directed to a ERS Call Center
  • The AAA tow truck takes the vehicle and the driver safely home

 CYBER MONDAY SAFETY WARNING!
So, you've shopped Black Friday, supported your Small Retailer on Saturday, but you still have some shopping to do. Sit back, relax and turn on your computer for Cyber Monday, "the biggest online shopping day of the year." This Monday, you will find some great bargains online. Check the websites of your favorite retailers (like Target, Walmart and many catalog stores) for their cyber bargains, or go to sites like Amazon. Just remember this important caution: When you get to the checkout page to put in your credit card info, make sure the address bar reads https. It's that little "s" at the end that means your transaction is secure!

A PRODUCT WE LIKE!
EVAN WILLIAMS EGGNOG

Evan Williams Eggnog is a brand of  eggnog with just the right amount of bourbon and other flavorings already in it.  This time of year, it's available at most liquor stores for around $7.00 for a 750ml bottle. We served it at our Christmas Open House last year and everyone loved it.
Serve it in a punch bowl with a pint or more of vanilla ice cream in the bowl to keep it chilled.

NOTE: Make sure to have a second punch bowl with plain eggnog with ice cream for the children or those who don't want alcohol.
