MACY'S THANKSGIVING PARADE
macy's parade
.
What better way to keep the little ones occupied Thanksgiving morning than to watch the  Macy's parade on TV that will usher Santa Claus into New York City? It's hard to believe that this will be the 85th year for the famous parade. Most of us  remember watching it ourselves when we were kids. (Wasn't that only yesterday?) The fun starts on NBC at 10 AM.

                                          WD-40 as Crayon Cleanup

wd-40
If you have little ones, chances are you have a box of crayons handy to keep them busy during the holidays. Unfortunately, sometimes the scribbles land on places other than the paper they were supposed to use. To remove crayon marks, apply just a small amount of WD-40 to almost any surface (including plastic, metal, TV screens, freshly painted walls) and rub away with a clean cloth.)

A PRODUCT WE LIKE!

Those of us who grew up in the South learned to cook green beans using bacon drippings or salt pork in the water for seasoning. We have found that a cube or two of GOYA brand Ham Bouillon Concentrate added to the water works just as well and we don't get all that fat and grease with the beans. You'll find it in the dried soup section at the supermarket. For other Latin foods, as well as recipes and coupons, check out the company's website. Click Here

HOLIDAY HEALTH TIP

thanksgiving dinner

Do you know that the average Thanksgiving dinner has over 2000 calories? It can be a real challenge if you are watching your waistline. The following are some eating tips from registered dietician Gloria Tsang so you can still look and feel good  after the Thanksgiving dinner without having to deprive yourself.

Healthy Eating Tips for Thanksgiving

Don't go to the Thanksgiving dinner hungry. Many of us don't eat earlier in the day because we're "saving room" for the big meal. Wrong!

Thanksgiving dinner is not an all-you-can-eat buffet.

Fill your plate half with vegetables, one quarter (4 oz.) of lean turkey and the rest with a starch of your choice.

Eat slowly and stop when you are full.

Turkey - go skinless.

Side Dishes - watch your portion size.

Make a conscious choice to limit high fat items.

Mashed potatoes are usually made with butter and milk; green bean casseroles are often prepared with cream of mushroom soup, cheese and milk and topped with fried onions; candied yams are loaded with cream, sugar and marshmallows. Simply limit yourself to a smaller helping size. This way you can sample all the different foods.
Drink lots of water. It keeps you hydrated and fills your stomach.

THE THANKSGIVING KIDS' TABLE

gobble gourdMartha Stewart has some terrific ideas for decorating the "kids' table" for Thanksgiving and the children can help to make these crafts themselves We especially like these 'Gourd Gobblers' that are made of gourds and corn husks. For directions for these and seven other fun craft ideas,

RECIPE OF THE WEEK
oyster casserole

PAULA DEEN'S SCALLOPED OYSTERS
This dish makes a terrific side dish for Thanksgiving. Similar to a stuffing, even people who don't like oysters usually like it!
Prep Time:10 min
Cook Time: 20 min
6 servings
Ingredients
  • 1 quart shucked oysters in their liquor
  • 2 cups coarsely crushed saltine crackers
  • 1 cup dry bread crumbs
  • 3/4 cup melted butter
  • 1 cup cream
  • Nutmeg
  • Salt and pepper
  • Celery salt, optional
Directions

Preheat oven to 350 degrees F.

Pick oysters free of any shells. (Refrigerated shelled oysters from the supermarket are fine to use.)

In a deep buttered casserole, mix together crackers, bread crumbs, and melted butter. Place a thin layer of crumb mixture in the bottom of the casserole. Cover it with half of the oysters. Season cream with nutmeg, salt, pepper and celery salt (if using). Pour half of this mixture over the oysters. On the next layer, use the oysters, 3/4 of the remaining crumb mixture and cover that with seasoned cream. Top with the remaining crumbs. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, or until lightly browned.
