Halloween is a day that most children anticipate with excitement! When did this special day that we celebrate on October 31st get its start? This traditional day for dressing up in costumes became popular for Halloween parties in the U.S. in the early 20th century. Costumes started to be mass produced when trick-or-treating became popular in the 1930s. The tradition of carving faces into pumpkins resulted from the early custom of the carving of turnips in Ireland and Scotland. When immigrants came to North America they found that pumpkins were more readily available and better suited for carving and the tradition has continued. Now you know! |
SHOTSI CAIN LAJOIE

IS A POSITIVE PERSON
Shotsi pictured above at the ceramic wheel making a bowl for the Samaritan Center Soup Bowl.
Shotsi has been a resident of Vero Beach for 3O years and her impact on our community has been extremely positive. As a busy mom of three boys she made it a point to etch out blocks of time to volunteer. Twenty years ago she was asked to serve on the Samaritan Center Founding Board. She innocently accepted and now sees her involvement as one of her greatest accomplishments. Her loyalty to the Samaritan Center is steadfast. Twenty years ago there were no homeless shelters in Indian River County and the vision that this founding group possessed is crystal clear in hindsight. The long hours and devotion of so many are still a very vivid memory that seems like only yesterday to Shotsi. The major fund raiser "The Samaritan Center Soup Bowl" was conceived from the same concept that created the center; a community effort that involved many reaching out to others. The Soup Bowl fundraiser will take place next Thursday, November 3rd. Shotsi, as pictured above, was one of forty volunteers who gave of their time to create 1,200 soup bowls that will be used for this event. Last year the event raised $50,000 and with the community support that Vero is known for a new record is sure to be set this year. Shotsi is also extremely involved in the Indian River Rowing Club and currently serves as the Chairperson of the Building Campaign. With Shotsi at the helm of this effort there is little doubt that Vero Beach is going to see the construction of its very first boat house that will serve as the nucleus for adult and student rowing teams. Shotsi rowed on the Notre Dame Varsity Crew, while at college at Saint Mary's and it has remained a love of hers. Years ago she tried to start a rowing club in Vero and the interest just wasn't there. Well, that is no longer the case. The rowing club is going strong and making great headway as it entrenches itself into our community, thanks to the grass roots effort of parents and friends of Sebastian River High School crew members, which she befriended early on.
Both the Samaritan Center and the Rowing Club are 'babies' that Shotsi has nurtured through the years with the help of so many others. She is the first to say that this is an incredibly supportive and giving community. She was amazed years ago when she witnessed so many "drop everything" to give whatever they could; be it time, money, or expertise, to ensure that an idea of the Samaritan Center became a reality. It was her involvement on that founding board that taught her the importance of giving back and it is her love of rowing that has served as the impetus to share it with others. Thank you Shotsi for all that you do! You have certainly been a driving force behind two very worthwhile efforts that have created a ripple effect to touch and help so many!

Bring the family and join in the fun!
@ the Annual Children's Art Fair
AT INDIAN RIVER CHARTER HIGH SCHOOL
Sat. Nov. 5th 10 AM -3 PM
Some of the best minds the world has ever known began their process with childhood creativity discovered in art. With that in mind, Indian River Charter High School (VAPA) has planned a Children's Art Fair for November 5, 2011, with the theme "Going Baroque."
As a school body, students have been examining the period of 1600--1750 AD and the hands--on art festival will turn their studies into a celebration of creativity for Treasure Coast children. "You can't teach creative thought, " says Harvey Kornicks, Director of the Art Department at IRCHS, "you have to encourage it. That's what the Baroque Fair will do".
- Musical treats from the school's award winning jazz band
- Songs from the talented chorus
- Performances by IRCHS award winning dance group
- Stage make--up demonstrations by seasoned theatre students
- Short--takes from the theatre department, featuring Cinderella
- Baroque Period games and yo--yo and hula hoop contests
- (Jared Ford, number one ranked yo--yo master in the State Florida, will be on hand to show some of the competition tricks that delight crowds.)
- Photo booth with royal costumes
- Fairytale Craft Fair for youngsters with sand castle art, styrofoam art & crown designing and croquet
- The best of fair food
- A free raffle ticket for everyone dressed in baroque attire (Your favorite prince or princess outfit will do!)
...AND FOR THE MORE FORMAL AUDIENCE
the Baroque fanfare will run for three evenings
November 2nd, 3rd and 4th
Exhibits will open at 5:30
The Fall VAPA Show takes place under the tent each night
with a Murder Mystery at 7 P.M.!

All 'Going Baroque' festivities will be held at
Indian River Charter High School,
6055 College Lane, Vero Beach.

'THE GAME' Saturday, November 19th 11:00 - Brunch and 12:00 Game Time Quail Valley River Club Here in Florida, college football fans may think of the Florida-Florida State rivalry as an established competition. But with only 53 annual meetings between the two, their rivalry is a mere babe. On November 19, 2011 the Harvard-Yale game will be played for the 128th time. THE GAME, as it is known, is second only to the Lehigh-Lafayette in continuous rivalry. THE GAME is being played this year at the Yale Bowl, in New Haven, CT. But you don't need to sit outside in the cold to enjoy THE GAME. Sponsored again by the Harvard Club of Vero Beach, alumni from Harvard and Yale, parents or grandparents of students of either school are encouraged to join us. Cost is $30.00 per person for a scrumptious buffet that includes an omelet station, salads, baked ham and biscuits and a sundae bar during halftime. A cash bar will be available. So put on your Crimson or Blue, or your school colors and join us for THE GAME. Alumni of the other Ivy League schools are welcome; in fact, anyone with an interest in THE GAME is urged to join us! SHOUT OUT TO FIREFIGHTER DUSTIN HAWKINS!
~ Cat-rescuer extraordinaire ~
FROM: MAUREEN NICOLACE
A lost-cat-turned-stranded-cat situation had a happy ending thanks to the efforts of off-duty firefighter Dustin Hawkins. My beloved "Smokie" hitched a ride into Vero inside the engine of my van and jumped out, unbeknownst to me. It took a day to figure out what happened and then another day to locate Smokie-- in a 65-foot dead end drainage pipe under the railroad tracks behind the K-Mart area. In spite of enticing Smokie with everything possible to get her to come out, she would not move. Off-duty firefighter Dustin Hawkins heard of the situation from fellow firefighter Kevin Slade and without hesitation the two of them performed a rescue mission, three-and-a-half days after Smokie went for her joyride. Kevin provided back up support at the entrance of the pipe, keeping in contact with Dustin throughout the "rescue mission." (BT W- Kevin's leg was in a cast, or else HE would have been the one in the pipe!) Smokie had sustained burn injuries from the ride, had a 105 temperature and was unable to exit the pipe on her own. If it weren't for Dustin's selfless efforts for a stranger, the story would have had a much different ending. When asked why he did it, Dustin immediately replied "Why not? I have pets and they're like family." Thank you, Dustin- cat hero!
