IS A POSITIVE PERSON
Lourdes Welhaven has lived in the Treasure Coast her entire life and currently lives in Fort Pierce with her husband. Lourdes is the owner of Networker for Business Women in both Indian River and St. Lucie Counties and was nominated as a Positive Person several months ago. However, when we contacted her she was quite modest and did not feel 'worthy.' After explaining that Positive People are recognized for an array of reasons, Lourdes finally agreed to an interview. Lourdes' was nominated because she has brought so many women together and provided a network opportunity for these ladies to grow their businesses during these difficult economic times. A member of Team FLASH attended the Indian River County Luncheon last Friday and received even more accolades for Lourdes. One of the attendees said that "Lourdes is a great example of doing what's right and paying it forward. She looks to grow the people around her by facilitating connections." Other comments expressed appreciation for the fact that Lourdes has been coordinating these lunches for nearly 10 years, while others thanked her for providing an avenue to make new friends and promote their business. One even recognized her as the Best Mentor! It was clear to see that Lourdes has impacted these ladies lives in a very positive way and is quite deserving of the title for which she was nominated. Not only does she bring these ladies together each month, but Lourdes is one to always offer help. You may have seen her name recently as having donated to the Hurricane Preparedness Packages that were assembled for ..... Lourdes is a member of several Chambers and is the Chapter Chair for the Business Connectors. She received the ABWA Citrus Charter Chapter Business Woman of the Year award and was the St. Lucie County Chamber of Commerce Leadership Class XVI Valedictorian. Lourdes is inspired by her parents and grandparents who escaped communism in 1960. They left everything behind to pursue political freedom. Lourdes gives a sincere "God Bless America" shout out! Thank you Lourdes for all that you have done for So many! You are indeed a Positive Person!

                     STEVE JOBS ... 1955-2011

ROLE MODEL? MAYBE, - MAYBE NOT!

Taylor Hatmaker, writing for Yahoo's Tech blog after Steve Jobs death last week, listed several things we didn't know about the Apple founder. We think they may surprise you.

  • He was the child of two unwed graduate students and was adopted at birth and raised by a middle class couple, Clara and Paul Jobs, in Mountain View, California.
  • He later connected with his birth mother and sister, but remained estranged from his biological father, a Syrian Muslim who is V.P. of a casino in Reno, Nevada.
  • He dropped out of college for financial reasons in his freshman year after only six months. A course in calligraphy is what first interested him in typography which he later applied to the Apple designs.
  • When he was 20 he went to work for Atari to create a game, enlisting Steve Wozniak (another Apple founder) to help him. Atari later paid Jobs a $5,000 bonus, but according to the unsuspecting Wozniak, he kept it for himself and only gave his partner $375.
  • At 23, he fathered a daughter with his former high school girlfriend. He originally denied paternity, but later acknowledged her and paid for her education at Harvard.
  • He went on a trip to India and returned as a Zen Buddhist. He later was married by a Buddhist monk to his wife Laurene and they had three daughters together.
  • At one point, Jobs took LSD and called his experience with the drug "one of the two or three most important things I have done in my life." He has suggested LSD may have contributed to the "think different" approach that he applied to Apple.
With this peculiar background, he is still recognized as one of the most brilliant men of our time and his remarkable speech to the graduating class at Stanford University in 2005 is truly inspiring. You can watch it in the You Tube below.

This workshop is open to Saint Edward's families as well as prospective      families interested in learning more about Saint Edward's financial aid program.
st eds choral
For Saint Edward's students, education is about the journey, not the test, and they enjoy an abundance of opportunities. Here All State Choral competitors (left to right) Sarah Lambert, Jamari Williams and Emily Salvador take a bow after scoring outstanding marks on the music theory and sight-singing portions of the competition. They will compete in the next round on October 19th.

Saint Edward's School is a community of teachers, parents and students who are interested in providing the richest education experience to motivated learners in pre-K - grade 12 from across the Treasure Coast. Keeping our class sizes small, our teacher-student ratio low and our curriculum the most enriching available, requires resources.  One of those resources is our financial aid program. Did you know that the School offers more than $1 million a year in financial aid to qualified students? We do, and we invite you to attend a workshop on Applying for Financial Aid at Saint Edward's School. Join us on the 25th @ 7:00 p.m. in the Wachter Activities Center.

FRANKIE PAUL

Frankie's loveable, animated attitude will take the crowd on a crazy roller coaster full of uproarious laughter. His appearances on Going Bonkerz, Comic Relief, Caroline's Comedy Hour, and MTV's Half Hour Comedy Hour have made him a favorite of audiences nationwide. He gasses the masses and that's a fact as he was the first place winner in the Coconut Comedy Laff-Off.

LISA CORRAO
A petite Italian girl originally from New York, Lisa Corrao grew up in Fort Lauderdale where she became a Middle School Teacher who would later snap.  No longer wanting to deal with the raging hormones of preteens, Lisa decided that it would be easier to put an end to the world's stupidity from a stage.  With her sweet smile and slightly evil sense of humor, she left teaching and began standup comedy as a semi-finalist in Nick @ Nite's "Funniest Mom in America" contest.  It would be the kick start to her new career.

UNDERSTANDING MILLIMETERS

millimeter

Occasionally you see something measured in millimeters (mm) and you may not know how that equates to inches. Here's a handy tip that will help ... ...just pull some change out of your pocket.

A Dime =17mm or 11/16 of a Inch
A Penney = 19mm or 3/4 of a inch

A Nickel = 21mm or 7/8 of a Inch
A Quarter = 24mm or 15/16 very close to 1 Inch
