rosh hashansHAPPY ROSH HASHANAH to our Jewish friends! Rosh Hashanah marks the Jewish Year 5772 and began at sunset on September 28 and will end at nightfall on September 30. Rosh Hashanah is the beginning of the Jewish High Holy Days, or Yamim Noraim (the "Days of Awe"), and is followed 10 days later by Yom Kippur, the "day of atonement." The Mishnah refers to Rosh Hashanah as the "day of judgment," and it is believed that God opens the Book of Life on this day and begins to decide who shall live and who shall die. The days between Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur are viewed as an opportunity for Jews to repent (teshuvah, in Hebrew) and ensure a good fate. Click Here to learn more.

PENNIES AREN'T FROM HEAVEN!
pennies from heavenDid you know that your copper penny is no longer a 'copper' penny? Since 1982 pennies have been made of 97.5% zinc. On the other hand, the nickel is made with 75% copper and only 25% nickel. The list below shows the cost to mint our various coins, including material and production costs. You will note that the cost of the penny and nickel are now more than their face value. It doesn't seem like much, but it could result in a loss to the government of about $100 million every year, or $1 billion over a decade! Consequently. research is now being done to explore  the possibility of using steel or other less expensive metals in the coins. (The figures below were released in 2008 and are believed to be even greater now.) Approximate current cost of minting various U.S. coins.
  • Penny - 1.26 cents
  • Nickel - 7.7 cents
  • Dime - 4 cents
  • Quarter - 10 cents
  • Dollar (Coins) - 16 cents

HEALTH TIP

weight ~ scalesAccording to CONSUMERS REPORTS ON HEALTH, an unexplained weight loss or gain of only 5% of your normal body weight can be a signal of serious health problems. This type of loss could be a sign of cancer, lung disease, Crohn's disease, diabetes or an overactive thyroid. It's also frequently attributed to depression, which could be treated with medication. An unexplained weight gain might mean an underactive thyroid, or fluid retention that could indicate potential heart failure or kidney, liver or lung problems.  Monitor your weight regularly and see a doctor if you experience either of this type of gain or loss.

peplumFASHION TIP

WHAT'S A PEPLUM???

MORE NEWS FROM NEW YORK FASHION WEEK!

Depending on how old you are, you may never have even heard of a 'peplum'.

Popular during the 40's and 50's, it returned to the runways during the recent New York Fashion Week. Basically, it's a  short flared, gathered, or pleated strip of fabric attached at the waist of a woman's jacket, dress, or blouse. Since it accents the waistline, it gives the appearance of a smaller waist. Watch for it coming to stores soon.  Here are some hints for wearing peplums:
  •  Avoid  florals, and geometric patterns.
  •  A shorter peplum tends to be more modern.
  •  Go towards peplums that have more of a flare to them and less of a ruffle.

RECIPE OF THE WEEK
WHTE CHOCOLATE S'MORES 1

WHITE CHOCOLATE S'MORES

GOOEY CAKE BARS

(As seen on pickypalate.com)

1 box yellow cake mix

1 large egg

1 stick (1/2 cup) unsalted butter, softened

4 1/2 full graham crackers

10 ounce bag white chocolate chips

2 cups mini marshmallows

1/2 cup sweetened condensed milk

1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. and line an 8×8 inch baking pan with tin foil that's been generously sprayed with cooking spray. Make sure foil goes all the way up and over the edges for this one. It will be a full pan

2. Place cake mix, egg, and butter into a large mixing bowl. Mix with hands until a nice dough forms, similar to a cookie dough. Press half of the dough into the bottom of the prepared pan. Layer with graham crackers, white chips then marshmallows. Top with remaining half of dough pressing evenly. Drizzle sweetened condensed milk over top then bake for 28-33 minutes, until cooked through and golden brown on top. Remove from oven. Let cool for 5 minutes then take a plastic knife and run along edges to loosen marshmallow (this will make your life easier when pulling foil out of pan to remove bars Let cool completely then remove bars from pan with foil edges. Cut off all edges if desired, about 1/2 inch each side. I save the edges to snack on too. Cut bars into squares and serve. They are delicious room temperature or chilled.
