editor's note poka-dot

Dear FLASHERS....You will receive a survey tomorrow that we hope you will respond to. Please take a moment to fill it out.  It only has 17 questions. We have kept it short and sweet to show that we respect our FLASHERS and their time! FLASH turned 1-1/2 years old last week and we figure it's the perfect time to assess things. To entice you to take 5-10 minutes to fill out our survey, we will be entering everyone that responds into our  drawing for a 'staycation' at Sea Spray Inn. We sincerely thank you  in advance for your time, your communication and suggestions.
WE LOVE OUR FLASHERS!
LET'S HEAR WHAT YOU HAVE TO SAY!

ASHLEY FRANKE

ASHLEY FRANKE

IS A POSITIVE PERSON

There are people that sparkle and even make you begin to shimmer because you are in their presence. Ashley Franke is such a person! Ashley has spent 18 years in Vero Beach and has been giving back to our community for the majority of those years. Her parents are 'her rock' and set an example of philanthropy that Ashley took to heart when she was young and started volunteering as a hospital 'Candy Striper,'  Environmental Learning Center volunteer, and Beach Clean Up volunteer. Her involvement has grown from there to include a list of ten local charities that she is actively involved with today.  However, her involvement doesn't stop there. Ashley and several of her friends have recently put the wheels in motion to form a nonprofit, The Relaxation Foundation. You can bet that you will hear more about this when their 501(c)3 status is obtained; hopefully by the end of the year. Ashley sits on the Advisory Board for the Indian River County Young Professionals Networking Group, three different Chamber committees, serves as a Development Council Board Member for Youth Guidance, Alzheimer's & Parkinson's Association Board Member coordinating "Walk to Remember" and is the Co-Chair for the Annual Samaritan Center Dinner. Ashley obviously has a passion for giving back to her hometown and believes that Vero is the special community that it is because there are so many that give so much! It's nearly impossible not to run into Ashley if you are out there in the community. Ashley's advice when you are out there...SMILE every day, look for the good in people and surround yourself with individuals that have a strong influence on various life perspectives and who are inspirational.  Ashley also shared the following words of wisdom,"Every action has a reaction...put as much good and positive energy out into the world and see the wonderful chain reaction of good that comes back!"   When Ashley isn't working or volunteering she enjoys many different hobbies which include: traveling, shopping, reading, kayaking, rollerblading, photography, acting, music and spending time with her family and friends. Team FLASH thanks you Ashley for all that you do to make our hometown a better place! You are quite a Positive Person!

World Habitat Day is designated each year by the United Nations as a time to reflect on the need for adequate shelter around the globe. This year, World Habitat Day was this past Monday and it began a month of special events among Habitat affiliates across the nation.  Since its start in 1991, the local affiliate has made it possible for more than 270 families to have simple, safe, decent homes, in Indian River County, and currently averages 30 homes per year, built or rehabbed. The public is encouraged to stop by the offices or the Home Center to learn a bit more about Habitat.  The Home Center is open 9 to 5, Monday through Saturday.

             October 27th - November 13th 2011

The curtain will rise on a new season at Riverside with Boeing-Boeing, the high-flying comedy that had London and Broadway audiences airborne with laughter. It is soon to land here at Riverside and you won't want to miss it. Bernard, a successful American architect living in a posh Paris apartment, has been deftly juggling three fiancées, each beautiful airline hostesses with frequent layovers in Paris. With a bit of assistance from his housekeeper, who plays a reluctant air-traffic controller, Bernard's carefully constructed timetable runs like clockwork until unexpected schedule changes bring all three to his apartment at the same time, and his "ideal life" unravels all in one nonstop night. Winner of the 2008 Tony Award for Best Play Revival, Boeing-Boeing has been called "the funniest play to hit Broadway in ages." Fasten your seat belts for an uproarious ride that will take you up, up and away!

RELIEF FOR DEPRESSION

 ,

DEPRESSIONResidents of Indian River County and the surrounding area who suffer from major depressive disorders may find relief through a new, non-invasive treatment now offered at the University of Florida Center for psychiatry and Addiction Medicine in Vero Beach. This summer, after seeing an opportunity to help adult patients struggling with depression, Dr. Wayne Creelman, the McCabe Eminent Scholar and Associate Chair of Community Psychiatry, introduced Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation therapy (TMS) at the UF Center. TMS helps restore the balance of chemicals in the brain by delivering focused magnetic pulses to the left prefrontal cortex. The treatment increases activity in the areas believed to control mood. The patient remains awake and alert during the procedure, simply reclining in a comfortable chair while a small curved device rests just above the patient's head delivering the magnetic pulses. For more information call Dr. Creelman at (772) 794-0179 or creelman@ufl.edu

Imagine the smell of this baking in your kitchen on a fall day...YUM!

PULL-APART CINNAMON SUGAR PUMPKIN BREAD

with BUTTERED RUM GLAZE

pumpkin bread
Ingredients
2 Tbsp unsalted butter
1/2 cup milk
2 1/4 teaspoons (1 envelope) active dry yeast
3/4 cup pumpkin puree
1/4 cup white sugar
1 tsp salt
2 1/2 cups bread flour
1 cup granulated sugar
2 tsp ground cinnamon
1/2 tsp fresh ground nutmeg
2 Tbsp unsalted butter

Directions
In a saucepan over medium-high heat, brown 2 tablespoons of butter, letting it bubble up and turn a dark golden brown but being careful not to allow it to burn (turn black). Once browned, remove the pan from the heat and carefully add the milk, return to stove and heat through. Pour the milk and butter into the bowl of standing mixer (fitted with a dough hook) and allow to cool so it is no longer hot but also not cool (about 100-110 degrees F). Once it has reached a warm but not hot temperature add the yeast and 1/4 cup of sugar and allow to proof. Then add the the pumpkin, salt, and 1 cup of flour. Stir until combined then add the rest of the flour 1/2 cup at a time and knead for 6 minutes, until the dough is smooth and elastic and just slightly sticky. If the dough is too moist, add extra flour 1 tablespoon at a time.

Move dough to a lightly oiled bowl and cover with a clean towel. Allow to rise in a warm place for 60-90 minutes or until doubled in size.

While dough is rising, brown another 2 tablespoons of butter. Add the sugar, cinnamon, and nutmeg and mix well. Set aside. Next, grease and flour a 9x5 loaf pan and set aside.

When the dough has doubled in size, punch it down and flip out onto a clean floured surface and knead with hands for 1-2 minutes. Roll dough into a 20x12 inch rectangle. (If dough is difficult to roll out, cover with a towel and allow to relax for a few minutes then try again.) Evenly sprinkle the dough with the cinnamon, sugar, butter mixture and press into dough with palms of the hand. Cut the rectangle into 6 strips. Lay strips on top of each other and cut each strip into 6 even squares (cut in half then each half into thirds). Stack strips vertically into the loaf pan. Cover the pan with a clean towel and let rise for 30-45 minutes more.

Preheat an oven to 350 degrees. After rising in the pan, bake for 30-40 minutes  or until top is a very deep golden brown.

Buttered Rum Glaze
2 Tbsp unsalted butter
1/8 cup brown sugar
1 1/2 Tbsp milk
3/4 cup powdered sugar
1 Tbsp. dark rum (Optional - may substitute 1 tsp. vanilla extract)

To prepare the glaze, heat the butter, milk, and brown sugar in a small saucepan. Bring to boil then immediately remove the pan from the heat and stir in the rum and powdered sugar. Pour over bread and enjoy every bite!
