SEPTEMBER - CHILDHOOD CANCER AWARENESS MONTH
They ride tricycles in the hallway, not in the park. They know the names of their chemo's in addition to their classmates. Their central lines have names. Nurses and doctors are their new family. They think hair is over rated. Their laughter can make a heart melt. Their strength will make a grown person cry. If you've ever seen a kid fight cancer, it will change your life forever... SEPTEMBER is CHILDHOOD CANCER AWARENESS MONTH! St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital does an incredible job treating children. They are committed to their mission of advancing cures and prevention of pediatric catastrophic diseases through research and treatment. By bringing awareness to this cause every year we grow ever closer to reaching our goals of curing those with cancer. Please consider making a donation to ST. Jude's if you would like to show your support. |

THE FALL TV SEASON IS HERE
. Wow! There are so many new TV shows this fall that it's going to be hard to keep up. There are fewer reality shows (Thank heaven!), lot's of new faces and old familiar ones too. (Tim Allen in LAST MAN STANDING debuts 10/11 on ABC) A couple of the hyped shows that are thought to have a lot of promise are both set in the 60's. (PAN AM tonight on ABC and PLAYBOY CLUB on Mondays on NBC). Steven Spielberg's TERRA NOVA takes a modern family even further back to the dinosaur age Mondays @ 8 on FOX (Think Jurrasic Park.)There are also new versions of old shows like CHARLIE'S ANGELS on tonight @8 on ABC. REVENGE premiered last night on ABC. Set in the Hamptons of Long Island, it's reminiscent of the glamour of DALLAS and DYNASTY. To get the full fall schedule, go to this Yahoo website and scroll down to the days of the week. Click Here |

OUR TOWN
Waxlax Center
Friday Oct. 28th @ 7:00 and Saturday, Oct. 29th @ 2:00 and 7:00
The Saint Edward's School Theater Department announces the Upper School production of Our Town. While the play originally debuted in 1938, this drama in three acts remains one of the most produced American plays. New York's City Beat attributes its staying power to its "universality, its simplicity and its immediacy." Broadway's most recent revival of the production in 2002 starred Academy Award Winner Paul Newman in the role of the Stage Manager.
In the Saint Edward's production the Stage Manager role will be played by senior Jamari Williams, and the focal young couple will be played by Senior Kaitlin Haire and Junior Matt Murphy. Others in the production include veteran Saint Edward's School talents including seniors Ethan Klein and Austin Carroll, juniors Cara Brueggeman, Megan Cook, Caroline Petty and Sarah Lambert, as well as relative newcomers: sophomore Natalie Deibe; freshmen Eric Lambert and Cassidy Layton; and 8th graders Karissa Mokoban and Hannah Taylor.
Presented in the state-of-the-art, 800-seat Waxlax Center for the Performing Arts located on the Saint Edward's School campus at 1895 Saint Edward's Drive. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students and seniors. Tickets may be purchased at the door or in advance. Call 772-492-2371 or Visit www.steds.org/waxlax for more information or to purchase tickets today.

THE TOP 100 FASTEST GROWING COMPANIES
It's probably not surprising that 16 companies in California made FORTUNE MAGAZINE'S list of the "Fastest Growing Companies." Unfortunately, though, no Florida companies are on it. Even if you don't follow the stock market, it's an interesting list to read because it gives you an insight into the growing trends in the country. Included on the list are health technology and precious metals (gold)companies, along with Apple, Priceline, Netflix and a gourmet coffee company. To read the complete list, Click Here

COLLEGE FOOTBALL

NFL games are great, but here at FLASH, we're especially fond of the NCAA games. Yes, a lot of these guys are on scholarship and they may be looking forward to making big bucks in the pros someday. (And sometimes they may be tempted to take gifts they shouldn't, like what happened at Miami recently.) But, on the whole, they (and their fans) display a love of the game itself and a heart that money can't buy. Last Sunday, we came across this terrific website that gives in depth coverage of the college games. Take a look. If you're a fan, we think you might want to bookmark it. Click Here

SPRING FASHION PREVIEW
New York Fashion Week
One designer who caught everyone's eyes at Fashion Week in NYC last week was Rachel Zoe. She used to dress stars strictly for the movies, but started her own collection a couple of years ago. Now her clients include Cameron Diaz, Kate Hudson, Demi Moore, Anne Hathaway and many others. She says her Spring 2012 collection was inspired by Bridget Bardot in the late 60's and early 70's, but (if you're old enough) you may find some of them reminiscent of the films of Marlene Dietrich and Carole Lombard. Her hemlines are short but if that's not for you, the looks would be just as attractive with a few more inches. The classic designs are glamorous real clothes for real people, unlike the outrageous designs we frequently see on the runway. To take a look at the collections of Zoe and others, just click on your favorite designer from the list on this website. Click Here

THINGS TO DO WITH PAPER TUBES
Wrapping paper, paper towels, toilet paper...so many things come with paper tubes. Here are some fun ideas to try.
- Keep electrical and computer cords tangle-free - Cut long tube horizontally and insert cords through tubes before plugging in. Tape closed.
- Use as kindling and logs in the fireplace.
- Make boot 'trees' - put inside tops of long boots.
- Keep pants crease-free - cut horizontally and place over hanger bar and tape closed
- Preserve kids' artwork - Roll, insert and write date - A roll will hold several.
- Fill for birthday treats instead of bags - Wrap in colored tissue and tie ends with ribbon.
- Use as a mailing tube - Wrap in brown paper and tape ends.
- Build a toy castle - Glue tubes together and cut as shown in the picture.

A NEW GADGET!

We haven't tried these yet, but these laser scissors look like a good idea. Operated by two cell batteries, they project a laser beam which allows you to cut a straight line with no measuring required. It could be great for cutting fabric or for school projects. They're even shown cutting hair...straight bangs, maybe? The scissors can be ordered online at www.amazon.com.

WANT TO START YOUR OWN BUSINESS? Like many people, you may have dreamed of starting your own business. Of course this requires funding whether you are starting from scratch or buying a franchise. According to the non-profit website, www.startuploans.org, one source may be your own 401k. You may be able to borrow up to $50,000 from it without any penalty to start a business. However, since it is a loan, you will need to pay it back, amortized over quarterly payments for five years. You also have to continue to make your monthly contributions, so be sure of your income before proceeding. To explore franchises for sale, Click Here |

HEALTH TIP
PROTECT YOUR TOOTH ENAMEL
According to the website Real Age, when your tooth enamel starts to erode, you've got major problems on your hands and certain foods like sweets and sodas may hasten this process. All carbonated drinks in a recent study had some impact on tooth enamel (with the one possible exception being root beer -- its impact on tooth enamel was slight). Citrus-flavored sodas hit teeth hardest, but colas caused problems, too. And it didn't matter if the drinks were diet or full-sugar. What hurts is the acid in the drinks. Watch for the total acid content and acid type (-- look for names like phosphoric, citric, malic, and tartaric) Rinsing after sipping a soda may hasten the acids out of your mouth.
