CONSTITUTION WEEK - SEPT. 17th - 23rd

constitutionOur founding fathers signed the U.S. Constitution on September 17, 1787. In 1939, William Randolph Hearst recommended that we should also celebrate our Citizenship. Originally called "I am an American Day," September 17th is now known as Constitution Day and Citizenship Day. Although this day is not a Federal holiday, it is a time for US citizens to remember the blessings of liberty and to recognize the responsibilities of citizenship. If you have school age children, they will probably have some sort of homework or project this week relating to this event. The Department of Education requires that any schools receiving Federal funds must have an educational program on this topic during this week.
NOTE: Wouldn't it be a good idea to require our political representatives to review the Constitution every year too? Sometimes we think they forget!

Never Forget Flight 93!
Perhaps you watched the televised Dedication last weekend at the Flight 93 Memorial. The 2,220 acre site in Shanksville, PA is now a National Park and will permanently honor the courage of the passengers and crew who made the ultimate sacrifice in order to save countless lives in our nation's capital.  The Memorial will include a Visitors and Education Center where future generations will come to learn how the actions of a few people can change the world. This link tells the whole story of the Flight with some new details, including a horrifying transcript of the recording from the cockpit.
NOTE: Please consider a donation to help raise the $10,0000,000 still needed to complete this  project. FLASH has already made a donation and we hope you will join us. We would also love to see our school children take on a project to raise funds for this worthwhile endeavor. (Is there a high school student who might be willing to organize that? If so, FLASH will help. Contact us by Clicking Here.

Three Saint Edward's Seniors named as

Semifinalists in National Merit Scholarship Program

Kyle Aldrich and Paul Colella, both of Vero Beach, and Ethan Klein of Port Saint Lucie have been selected by the National Merit Scholarship Program as Semifinalists. The three seniors from Saint Edward's School's class of 2012 are now eligible to become National Merit Scholars. Nationwide 16,000 Semifinalists have been selected in the 57th annual National Merit Scholarship Program. The Program recognizes students who show exceptional academic ability and potential for success in rigorous college studies.

The index used to qualify students for the National Merit Program is based upon the 2010 Preliminary SAT Test (PSAT) and students who quality represent the 99th percentile or above of U.S. high school seniors. These three students are among the highest scoring seniors in the State of Florida. Of the three who qualified from Saint Edward's, one student scored two perfect scores in math and writing out of the three sections covering critical reading, math and writing and a second student scored a perfect score on the math section.

 An Interesting and Amazing Artist

Here is a link to a site that depicts pieces of art from Chris Jordan. Jordan uses every-day items to create his masterpieces and each piece is reflective of something that is happening currently in our world. Here is an example. THIS IS SO COOL!  Click on the image and then click it again once you are on the site. It will slowly zoom in on the detail depicting each item used to create this work of art. Do the same for each piece of art on the site and I promise you ... you will be amazed!

MARTHA STEWART'S SEWING KIT

An old-fashioned Mason jar can become a new sewing kit with a built-in pincushion on top. Separate the lid's sealer and screw cap and trace around sealer on cardboard. Using a compass, draw another circle on fabric, 1 inch larger in diameter than the first. Cut out both circles and  make the cushion by placing cotton between fabric and cardboard. Turn screw cap upside down, and apply hot glue to inside edge of rim; quickly press cushion into lid until cloth protrudes smoothly above screw cap's opening and cardboard is flush against rim. Apply hot glue around edge of cardboard, fold over excess fabric, and press down. Glue top of sealer to cardboard. Fill jar.

NOTE: With new spools of thread and assorted buttons, this could make a cute extra shower gift for a bride.

flue shots FLU SEASON IS HERE AGAIN!

Get your flu shot!

Flu shots are currently being offered at several locations in Indian River County, including CVS, Walgreens and Walmart.

Those who should get vaccinated for the flu include:

Everyone 6 months of age and older, including anyone who received the 2009 H1N1 vaccine and anyone who got sick with H1N1

People who care for children younger than 6 months of age, because they are too young to receive a flu vaccination and, therefore, are at high risk of catching it.

Young children 6 months and older, pregnant women, people with chronic health conditions like asthma, diabetes or heart or lung disease, and people 65 years and older.

Vaccination is also important for health care workers and other people who live with or care for high risk people to keep them from spreading the virus to those who are high risk.

If someone in your family does become ill, this chart from the National Institute of Health, and Allergy and Infectious Diseases will help determine if it is the Flu or a Cold. To get the chart, Click Here.

CREATE A SAFE KITCHEN

Kitchens are considered one of the most dangerous areas of a home for seniors. Many accidents and falls occur in the kitchen due to a range of common scenarios: cooking fires, grease and spills on the floor, reaching for objects, appliance or garbage disposal injuries and inappropriate objects placed in a microwave. (An Alzheimer patient once started a fire by putting a frozen dinner in the oven without removing it from the box.) Many caregivers of individuals suffering from cognitive disorders or conditions will attest to the potential possibility of to harm him or herself with the darnedest things. Keeping the kitchen a safe and secure environment for the elderly isn't always easy, but just as new parents baby-proof their home, think of this as senior-proofing and remove or disconnect potentially hazardous items.

We know you can't always be there to monitor the patient's behavior.

HEALTH TIP - SIZE MATTERS!
oversizedMeal sizes have grown over the past few decades, contributing to an obesity epidemic in the United States.  In fact, Cornell University researchers recently found amusing proof of portion swelling when they compared the 1936 and the 2006 editions of that homemaking classic, Joy of Cooking. They found that the recipe for chicken gumbo went from 228 calories per serving in the 1936 version to 576 calories in the 2006 edition. Why? The editors simply had to jack up the portion sizes to meet our oversized modern-day appetites. For an easy way to remember ideal portion sizes, Click Here

 FASHION TIP

coach bucketHAVE YOU WEIGHED YOUR HANDBAG LATELY?

According to ELLE magazine, the fall trend in handbags is less hardware and consequently lighter weight like the COACH 'bucket' bag pictured. This could be a welcome trend for many of us. New York chiropractor Iris Medina notes that over-packed purses are making us walk lopsided, distorting our posture and leaving us with aching backs, shoulders, necks and hips. If you have pain in these areas, you might want to consider going lighter. If a woman doesn't want to give up a big handbag. She should regularly switch it to the opposite side  or try to position in front of her body.

RECIPE OF THE WEEK
Pretzel - Rolo Treats

These are a great sweet/salty combo treat!

pretzel rolo

Lay pretzels on a baking sheet and top with a chocolate Rolo candy. Bake in the oven at 250*F for 4-5 minutes (no longer). When you remove them from the oven, the Rolo will still be in the same shape as when it went in the oven. Place a pecan half on top of the Rolo and press down a bit.Place the entire baking sheet in the freezer for about 5-7 minutes to allow the Rolo to cool. Remove from freezer and enjoy! Or place in a container to enjoy later.  These will last several days- probably more, but they've never lasted that long in our house!

These are so delicious!  A great sweet-salty combo.
ENJOY!
