REMEMBERING 9/11 BY THE NUMBERS

Sepember_11_boy_1

As we remember 9/11 this Sunday, we found a website from NEW YORK MAGAZINE that puts it all in perspective: 2,819 people died, not including the terrorists that highjacked the planes. Sadly, of that number only 289 intact bodies were found. For the breakdown of other surprising statistics about this tragedy, Click Here.

Note: It's shocking to realize that more people died in New York on 9/11 than the 2,402 who died at Pearl Harbor 70 years ago this December in 1941.

Flash fun facts and knowledge

DID YOU KNOW:
The United States has five percent of the world's population, but twenty-five percent of the world's prison population.

FLASH GRAMMAR REFRESHER:

Who or That -

The girl that married dear old dad or the girl who married dear old dad? If both sound right, it's because both are right. A person can be either a that or a who. A thing on the other hand is always a that. What about dogs and cats? If the animal is anonymous, or we don't use the name, it's a that. If the animal has a name, he or she is a who.

WORD OF THE DAY:

OBDURATE -

Grant Application Workshop

Thursday, September 15th

Hosted by Impact 100

impact 100

Impact 100 has extended an invitation to all Indian River County 501©3 agencies to attend the 2012 Application Workshop to be held at 8:30 a.m. on Thursday, September 15, 2011, at the IRSC Richardson Center. Any agency wishing to submit an application for one of the much sought after $100,000 grants is urged to attend. To register for attendance, contact Barbara Lowry, Grants VP at grants@impact100ir.com. Space is limited. Please limit representatives to two individuals.

Barbara Lowry will answer questions, such as: Does Impact 100 fund building projects? Do religion based organizations qualify for an Impact 100 grant? Does Impact 100 fund capital campaigns? These questions and more will be addressed at the workshop.  "Impact 100 is looking for grants that can transform an organization, a group of individuals, or the community," explains President Sue Tompkins. "The grants must be sustainable. The grant writers must show that their programs can be sustained after the Impact 100 money has been spent; in other words they must continue beyond Impact's funding." Winners will be chosen by a majority vote of the membership and announced at the annual April meeting.

WATCH FOR DEHYDRATION IN THE ELDERLY!

Older adults have an increased chance of becoming dehydrated because they don't feel as thirsty as younger people. They might also have kidneys that don't work well or they choose not to drink because of the inability to control their bladders (incontinence). Sometimes physical problems can make it hard to drink or hold a glass, or it could be painful to get up from a chair to go to the bathroom. Some have  speech problems that make it difficult for them  to communicate their needs. Prescription diuretic medications can also cause dehydration. They should be watched especially closely if they have illnesses that cause high fever, vomiting, or diarrhea. Check with a health professional for signs of early symptoms. We know you can't always be there to monitor a loved one's behavior, so let us know if we can help - by the hour, day or week.

Let us help care for a loved one!

FASHION TIP

'BURNT' FALL COLORS FOR MEN AND WOMEN

An e-mail from Fashionizing.com says the colors being used by designers for the fall are "burnt" and will carry on through the winter for both men and women. By  "burnt," they  mean those deeper shades of red, gold, rust  and orange. Think 'fall leaves'  which may be nothing new for us gals, but  in a jacket or tie, could be a handsome addition to a man's wardrobe!

A PRODUCT WE LIKE!

salad spinner

I used to wonder why anyone would buy a "Salad Spinner." (Just one more gadget to take up too much room in my already crowded cabinet.) But then someone gave me one and now I know why. It does do an excellent job of spinning the water out of greens, but it also has other uses. Separately, the plastic basket can be a colander. Fill the bowl it sits in with water and it's great for washing berries and grapes. The bowl itself is good to use as a small mixing bowl. It does three jobs in one and stores in a very small space. Spinners are available at some local stores and online.

A FUN WEBSITE!
surrey
Many Americans were introduced to Worksman cycles years ago when the  "Ice Cream Man" would ride through their neighborhoods, ringing the bells on his tricycle, but Worksman Cycles started long before that. Back in 1898, Morris Worksman believed that a well designed three-wheeled cycle could replace the horse and wagon by providing a less expensive and more reliable way to move people and products. Originally, the cycles were used in New York City by local businesses to make deliveries. Today the company offers all types of bicycles, - single, two and even three seaters, as well as special ones like the surrey in the picture and they still make ice cream carts too! To explore the website of their Factory Direct Store, CLICK HERE
