FLASH GRAMMAR REFRESHER:

affect/effect ..... If you are referring to a thing (noun) ninety-nine times out of one hundred you will mean effect. (The termites had a startling effect on the house.) If you mean an action (a verb), the odds are just as good if you go for affect. (Her illness affected her performance.)

victor hart

A POSITIVE PERSON AND A POSITIVE GROUP!

To long-time residents,  the name Victor Hart is virtually synonymous with a time in Indian River County history that was, at once troubling, exciting and, ultimately, transforming. Hart is a Bahamian native who came to the area as a migrant worker at the beginning of the tumultuous, pivotal '60s. After moving to Gifford, Hart, a natural leader,  wasted no time in becoming active in the community, quickly earned the nickname "Chief," and founded, along with other like-minded citizens, (including his wife, the late Valerese Hart)  The Progressive Civic League of Gifford Florida, Inc. In 1963, Hart co-founded the local chapter of the NAACP and served as its president for many years.  Over the years,  this dedicated leader helped found the C.O.P.E. Commission, an auxiliary of the GPCL, which worked with the Sheriff's Office to address various local issues and concerns.  Hart has also served on the Florida Community Health Board, the Gifford Health Center Board, for which he is current president; and as chairman of the Juvenile Justice Council.

Affected by the current economy, in the spring of 2011 after decades of championing his community, Hart found himself unable to perform much needed repairs on his home. Learning of his plight, Habitat clearly saw Hart's predicament as a perfect fit for its Neighborhood Revitalization Initiative program.  In just under a month, Habitat's NRI crew repaired/replaced Hart's kitchen and dining floor; installed new, more spacious kitchen cabinets; and replaced the kitchen sink, fixtures, stove and fridge with new units.

After all the years Victor Hart has spent in  dedicated service to his community, Indian River Habitat for Humanity was honored to be able to offer him a helping "hand up."  FLASH is happy to recognize both Mr. Hart and Habitat and are grateful for all they have both done for our county!

PLATE DOILIE

NOW THAT'S CLEVER!

This is a super idea that can be used for numerous types of gatherings. This  one is great for a bridal shower and it simultaneously takes care of the place-card. You could use a pink or blue doily for a baby shower. For a birthday Tea Party, you  can use quotes from a children's book such as Charlotte's Web: (You've just gotta' love some of the quotes from Charlotte's Web!)

  • "Always be on the lookout for the presence of wonder."
  • "One of the most time-consuming things is to have an enemy."
  • "Be obscure clearly."
  • "Salutations is my fancy way of saying hello."
  • "Chin up, chin up / Everybody loves a happy face / Wear it, share it."

 GROOMING TIPS FOR MEN

men in the mirrorFirst impressions are important whether you're being interviewed for a job (or college) or trying to impress a lady. The way you look is the way you will be perceived and a first impression is made within the first 10 seconds. So, it's imperative to always put your best self forward. FLASH found this   great video that puts it on the line for you men! The ladies at Team FLASH think it hits the mark. Though many of the tips appear to be common sense, we see an awful lot of men who will benefit greatly from following these easy steps to looking their best!

WORD SLIDE STICK

.

These word sticks make learning to read more fun!  Have your child help create your slide sticks out of address labels, hard stock paper cut lengthwise, and any paper roll from wrapping paper, paper towel, or toilet paper. Cut strips to appropriate width to fit the tube opening that you will be using. Write the last couple of letters of a simple word on the label that you will adhere to the painted tube as seen in the image above.  Next, write the first letter of possible words on the strip of paper. Make sure to space them appropriately. Now, when you slide the paper through tube, you will form different words with every letter. Enjoy this inexpensive creative fun way to "slide" into the new school year and make your child love learning to read!

A GOOD IDEA FOR YOU GUYS!

                DRAINAGE FOR TRASH CANS

Washing your outdoor trash can should be a breeze if you first drill several 1/2-inch holes in the bottom. The drainage holes will allow you to hose down the insides of the barrel without having to dump out the dirty water; this will also prevent rainwater from collecting.  (Why haven't the manufacturers thought of this?)

CARE-GIVING FRIENDS

"Everyone wants to be treated as a real person and being treated as a best friend is what they need most of all," said Virginia Bell, MSW, co-founder of "The Best Friends Approach."  Family care giving and Home Health Aid work is a rewarding task, but when memory loss creates a challenge, how can one find the happiness of a functioning relationship?

Best friends do things together.   For example, sorting objects, playing a game, helping with simple household chores create camaraderie.

Communicate - be a good Listener. Talk about their favorite things, memories, and things in the present.

Build Self-Esteem - Give compliments, ask advice, congratulate and encourage.

Laugh together - Tell jokes or funny stories; have fun and use humor to strengthen your bonds.

.
Show affection - Give a hug, smile and serve them.

No greater happiness comes than when we selflessly serve others, and the reward can be. . . . a new best friend!

We know you can't always be there to monitor the patient's behavior.

Let us help care for a loved one!

HEALTH TIP
WARNING! DANGER OF INTERNET INFORMATION
The current issue of BOTTOM LINE PERSONAL warns about the dangers of seeking medical advice from the internet without checking with your doctor. In an article entitled Death By Internet, it cautions that one woman didn't take an antibiotic that was prescribed because she read on the internet that some people recovered without it. She wound up in the Critical Care unit with an infection that had grown much worse. It also warns of internet searches causing "cyberchondria" - the belief that some innocuous symptom reflects some dreaded disease. (Example: A search for "headache" came up with 'brain tumors' as a possible cause in 25% of the results!) There's no need to stop looking up health information this way, but discuss it with your Dr. before applying it to yourself.

SAVINGS TIP OF THE WEEK!

BUY GROCERIES - SAVE ON GAS!

Several major grocery chains have made arrangements with Shell Oil to redeem the chain's reward points for discounts at the pump. Usually, every $50.00 spent on groceries gets you 5 cents a gallon discount.  EXAMPLE: Buy 25 gallons and you will save $1.25. The points accumulate each time you shop. Consequently, they grow fast, but use them promptly because most expire at the end of each month. Nevertheless, it's a good deal.  You will need to slide the discount card you get from the store at the pump. Participating stores include Winn-Dixie, Bi-Lo, Giant, Kroger, Save Mart, Stop & Shop and many regional convenience stores. Although many of these are not in our area, keep an eye out for those that are.

Saint Edwards

More than 500 students entering grades pre-kindergarten through 12 and 64 faculty surged through the halls of Saint Edward's School on Wednesday, August 24, 2011 for the opening of the School's 47th year. The pre-school grades, pre-kindergarten and kindergarten, are full to capacity this year. Joining the Saint Edward's family are new students from New England, the Mid-West and the southern states. "Saint Edward's continues to be a popular choice among families moving to the area," said Director of Admissions Peggy Anderson, "as well as a quality choice for families from the Treasure Coast and the 4-county area."

Saint Edward's students live as far north as Melbourne, west to Okeechobee and as far south as Stuart. "We are fortunate as we move through a national recession, which deeply affects the nation's system of public schools," says Anderson "to offer a program free from budget cuts. All students still have the opportunity to participate daily in Physical Education, sportopening days, the arts and clubs that enrich them. Parents recognize the value of educating the whole child combined with our demonstrated excellence in academics."

The international student population at Saint Edward's continues to grow. Enrolled students this year hail from Spain, China, Cuba and Canada. In addition Saint Edward's has two students studying abroad in China this year.
