DR. JOHN SARBACK
.
.
IS A POSITIVE PERSON
Our POSITIVE PERSON this week, Dr. John M. Sarbak, MD, PA, was nominated by his former patient, Martha Ruiz. Here's what Martha had to say in her nomination:
"At the age of 41, I was diagnosed with breast cancer and had to have a mastectomy. For a woman, this is devastating news. Dr. Sarbak changed my life and my views of breast cancer/mastectomy. You can continue your life normally by having breast reconstruction and treatment. I am so grateful to Dr. Sarbak and his staff for helping me during such difficult times. I am so blessed to have Dr. Sarbak in my life. God bless him. He is a true angel."
Dr. Sarbak certainly has a heart for helping others. He has participated with the Smile Train project since 2000 and has traveled to different countries performing voluntary surgery on children with cleft palates. (To see their work, you can visit the website a www.smiletrain.org.) The transformation for a child is often not only a physical one but simultaneously begins a transformation from the inside-out. Dr. Sarbak's patients are a constant source of motivation for him. Dr. Sarbak says that helping others who otherwise have no way of having their problems addressed is an incredible motivator. It's amazing how inspiring children can be "who aren't yet limited by the world's perceptions."
Dr. Sarbak and his wife Lisa arrived in Vero in July of 2001 when he opened his practice here. When asked what advice he would give to others, he said. "Make sure you do what you love. Once you start doing that, other details (i.e. making a living) will always work themselves out."
Dr. Sarbak considers his 8 year old son, John Muir Sarbak, to be his greatest accomplishment. He is also quite proud of his 9' x 10' x 6' water wall in his living room that took him over two years to complete. It is made of one hundred concrete blocks, one hundred 60lb bags of concrete, 2.5 tons of Pennsylvania Blue Stone with copper water ways. Wow! He obviously has a creative side and his hobbies include sculpting and writing. He also enjoys beach volleyball and swimming. Consequently, he loves living here and is thankful to the people of Vero Beach and the Treasure Coast for welcoming his family and making this such a great place to live. - And we thank you Dr. Sarbak for all you have done for so many people in Vero and for children around the world. We love your philosophy and view of life and are proud to have you as a POSITIVE PERSON!

LAST WEEKEND BEFORE SCHOOL - FOR MOMS and DADS! "Are we through yet???" Make it a family weekend, even if you haven't finished all the school shopping. It's a good weekend to make plans!
Talk with your kids about goals for the school year. What do they want to accomplish this year? It's not just about improving grades. How about being more efficient with homework by taking a half hour television or internet surfing break after finishing two hours of their assignments? Do they want to get more involved in sports this year or branch out into a new activity, perhaps student government or music? Organize school and activity schedules.
For instance, having an hour of free time after coming home before starting homework or limiting activities to three days, not four days a week. Tell them to give you plenty of notice if they're going to need transportation for something and put it on the family calendar. Coding each child's activities is easily accomplished by assigning each child a different color that you will use when inputting their information. (Just keep those different color pens accessible and near the calendar.)
Transition back to healthier eating and sleeping habits
Talk to the kids about getting back into a healthier routine. There has probably been a lot of 'staying up late' and eating junk food this summer. Ask them for some healthy meal suggestions. For suggested bedtimes, see post below.
|
HOW MUCH SLEEP DOES YOUR CHILD NEED?
Web MD makes these recommendations.
3-6 Years Old: 10 - 12 hours per day
Children at this age typically go to bed between 7 and 9 p.m. and wake up around 6 and 8 a.m., just as they did when they were younger. At 3, most children are still napping while at 5, most are not. Naps gradually become shorter as well. New sleep problems do not usually develop after 3 years.
7-12 Years Old: 10 - 11 hours per day
At these ages, with social, school, and family activities, bedtimes gradually become later and later, with most 12-years-olds going to bed at about 9 p.m. There is still a wide range of bedtimes, from 7:30 to 10 p.m., as well as total sleep times, from 9 to 12 hours, although the average is only about 9.
12-18 Years Old: 8 - 9 hours per day
Sleep needs remain just as vital to health and well-being for teenagers as when they were younger. It turns out that many teenagers actually may need more sleep than in previous years. Now, however, social pressures conspire against getting the proper amount and quality of sleep.

FEELING CRAFTY? TRY SHARPIE PEN TIE DYE
This project is so much fun and something that you will
love....if you have kids.... well, they will love it too! You draw on fabric with Sharpies. Draw a design that is at least an inch in diameter. More ink bleeds more. Drip rubbing alcohol into the center of the design and watch the ink bleed out creating a beautiful effect. (Try a straw or a medicine dropper.) More highly concentrated alcohol of 70% or more works best. This is probably what you already have in the cabinet. Heat seal color with an iron or dryer. But be super careful...alcohol is extremely flammable! Fun for a pillow case or a quilt for those of you who are extremely ambitious!

SHIPPING BACK-TO-COLLEGE SURPRISES!
If you have college age children, they have probably already left for school. In a couple of weeks, send them a touch of home by baking a batch of their favorite cookies or a small cake. (This is especially good for homesick Freshmen!) To keep them from crumbling, put them in plastic bags in a box and pack roasted peanuts in the shell around them. (The peanuts are available at your supermarket and will be another snack for them to enjoy!) If you aren't into baking, send them the ingredients for S'mores...i.e., marshmallows, graham crackers and Hershey bars. Most dorms have a microwave to heat them and it's a fun way to get new friends together!

HEALTH TIP
CHOCOLATE MILK!
Researchers from Canada's McMaster University came up with this tip that we think you'll love! Strength trainers who drank an 8 oz. glass of chocolate milk following a workout lost twice as much fat and gained 66% more muscle than those who drank sports drinks. It seems that the milk's calcium, protein and cocoa work to create new muscle cells and speed up fat metabolism.

SAVINGS TIP OF THE WEEK!
Take your favorite liquid fabric softener and soak an old hand towel or flour cloth completely with it. Wring it out and let it dry completely, then throw it in with your next load.
