KERRY BARTLETT

kerry award

IS A POSITIVE PERSON

Kerry Bartlett was born and raised in Vero Beach. She attended the University of Florida where she earned her Bachelor of Science in Journalism. She returned to Indian River County in 1987 and launched a successful career in public relations. She later transferred her experience to the nonprofit sector through positions with the United Way and the Visiting Nurse Association and Hospice Foundation. In 2009, Bartlett became the first Executive Director for the Indian River Community Foundation, a position which she continues to fill. Under her leadership, the organization has experienced unprecedented growth and now holds more than $9 million in assets designated for charitable use.

In 2005, Bartlett helped established Indian River County's first chapter of the Association of Fundraising Professionals, an organization dedicated to promoting ethical practice and professionalism throughout the fundraising community. She served as president for two years and the chapter has since grown to include 72 members and is recognized as one of the fastest growing and strongest chapters in North America.

As a member of the Treasure Coast Gator Club, three years ago Bartlett took on the task of reviving the organization's signature event, the Treasure Coast Gator Toast, to raise money for college scholarships. She has chaired the event for three consecutive years, during which time the Club's scholarship program has grown to provide 18 annual scholarships to University of Florida undergraduates from Indian River and St. Lucie Counties.

Of all her professional and volunteer work, Bartlett said her most rewarding experience was in 2010 when she participated in the Indian River County Healthy Start Coalition Dancing With Vero Stars. Bartlett spent three months raising money for Healthy Start while learning to  ballroom dance. She raised the most money during the competition and has continued to train in ballroom dance ever since.

In recognition of outstanding community service, members of The Exchange Club of the Treasure Coast honored Kerry Bartlett with the prestigious Book of Golden Deeds award on Thursday, July 7 at the organization's monthly luncheon. This was only the second time that the Exchange Club of the Treasure Coast has presented the Book of Golden Deeds. FLASH joins The Exchange Club in spotlighting and thanking Kerry for all of the wonderful contributions she has made to our community. Kerry, you are obviously deserving of our Positive Person title and you serve as an inspiration to us all!  Thank you!

VACUUM

.

Here is a clever way to find something small that you have lost. Secure a knee high or pantyhose over the end of your vacuum with a rubberband. Then turn on the vacuum and begin to cover the area where you lost your item. The suction of he vacuum will pick it up and hold it onto the pantyhose. Simply brilliant!

Juanita Lolita

Juanita Lolita is a native Floridian, born and raised in St. Petersburg. She started doing comedy in December of 2008 when a co-worker signed her up for an open mic night at a local comedy club. She won a contest that night that advanced her to the Florida's Funniest person semi-finals and ultimately the finals where she came in 4th overall. Just one year later she was performing for Creflo and Taffy Dollar at The World Changers Dome in Atlanta for over 7000 women. Since then she has performed in several clubs across Florida. Juanita is a clean comedian that sees humor in everything. Because of her Hispanic-hillbilly heritage, you will find her comedy of everyday life amusing.

Saint Edwards

AP Report Confirms Saint Edward's Outperforms State and Global Test Takers When it comes to being prepared for college level work one program puts high school students to the test - the Advanced Placement (AP) Program. AP exams are specifically designed to measure a student's ability to undertake college level courses. Eighty-six percent (86%) of the students taking AP courses at Saint Edward's School achieved a score of 3 or more on their 2011 AP examsst eds test results according to a report recently made available from the College Board. Comparatively, 48% of Florida students achieved a 3 or better on the exam while 60 percent of students taking AP exams across the globe achieved scores of 3 or better. Saint Edward's students have outperformed their global peers on the AP exams for the last five years and have made gains every year while the percent of students scoring a 3 or better globally, and in Florida, declined. (see chart) AP Five-Year School Summary 2011 Percent of Advanced Placement Students with Scores of 3 or better.

BREAKFAST SANDWICHES

When everybody is in a hurry in the morning,  it's easy to give the children cereal or a couple of PopTarts. Breakfast sandwiches are an idea that is almost as quick and can be much more nutritious, especially if you use whole wheat bread! You also add protein with the peanut butter, eggs and meat. Here are a few suggestions. You will probably think of more and your kids can help make them.

MomMcMuffin Like McDonald's, but use a whole wheat English muffin with a fried or scrambled egg, cheese and deli ham or bacon then heat about 20 sec. in the microwave.

Grilled Cheese Sandwich - When served for breakfast, these are sometimes called "Cheese Dreams". Bacon or ham can be added.

Peanut Butter and Jelly - A kid's favorite and just as good at breakfast as it is at lunch!

Peanut Butter and Sliced Banana - This was a favorite of Elvis Presley. Also, try it grilled.

Egg Salad - Make the egg salad the night before, then put it on the bread in the morning.

NOTE:  Restaurant tip for quick bacon - Bacon in quantity can be cooked in a skillet in advance (maybe on the weekend), then kept in the refrigerator and reheated briefly on a paper towel in the microwave when needed.

SAVINGS TIP OF THE WEEK!

 CRAZY WAYS OUR GOVERNMENT

  SPENDS YOUR TAX  MONEY!

Actually, the only way that this can save you any money is to copy the link and send it to your representatives in Washington and let them know that you object to the amounts spent on the items listed.  The last of the twenty listed is, and we quote: "#20 Almost unbelievably, the National Institutes of Health was given $800,000 in stimulus funds to study the impact of a "genital-washing program" on men in South Africa." If you agree that this is a terrible waste, send the list on to your friends and be sure to send it to Congress! No matter if you consider yourself a Democrat, Republican or Independent, we feel certain that we all agree that there is a terrible amount of waste going on in Washington and it needs to stop. Click here to follow the link

meteor shower           BEST DAYS TO SEE A METEOR SHOWER         Aug. 11, Oct. 9, 20, Nov. 4-9, 16, 26 and Dec. 13

                    CHECK THE SKY TONIGHT

According to the Farmer's Almanac, if you happen to be awake between, midnight and sunrise on certain nights chances are you might see a meteor shower. A meteor shower is seen when the earth's orbit intersects the path of groups of particles. These particles are the remains of comets and orbit the sun on a regular schedule: thus it is known when the two orbits coincide. For instance, two times a year the earth passes through the particles left by Halley's comet. Here is a list of dates of principal comets. The date of maximum visibility may vary by a day or two in either direction.

FEELING CRAFTY?

floor matBoards of mahogany and cedar are great for decks -- and doormats, too. This slatted mat is sturdy and lets water drain right through. With a handsaw, cut sixteen 2-by-2s, available at lumberyards, to 24 inches long. With a 3/8-inch drill bit, make 2 holes in each board, one 6 inches from each end. Cut 6 feet of 1/4-inch sisal. Fold rope in half and mark the center point. to make a handle, tie a knot 7 inches in each direction from that point. Thread each end of rope through the holes in the first board and tie another pair of knots (below). Continue to secure all the boards. Trim excess rope.

RECIPE OF THE WEEK
A FUN IDEA!
watermelon hedgehog
Watermelon Hedgehog

Well...Is this just the cutest thing ever?  No recipe here really. Just cut your watermelon as pictured above.  Secure feet, nose, and blueberry eyes from the inside with toothpicks. Cut them off so that they are flush with the rind. Then cut the watermelon into squares and stick your toothpicks in.  All that is left to do is to sit back and graciously accept all of the compliments that you are sure to receive on this little guy! :) FUN!
