PAM SCHLAMOWITZ
IS A POSITIVE PERSON
Pam and her husband of 35 years, Dr. Robert Schlamowitz, moved to Vero 28 years ago from San Diego. Together they have 3 children and 2 grand children. Watching the values that they worked so hard to instill passed on to their grandchildren gives her a great sense of accomplishment. As a stay-at-home mom, Pam began volunteering in her children's school as many parents do. She did so for many years until they graduated. She discovered that she could expand her volunteering to the community where she could not only use her musical talent, but also step outside her comfort zone to learn some new skills as well. She has been volunteering at McKee Botanical Garden for 10 years as a Garden Guide and received their outstanding volunteer award last year. She has also been a regular volunteer with Habitat for Humanity as a participant in the Women Build for the last four years. She does love music and has volunteered her talents at Temple Beth Shalom where she was choir director, a cantorial soloist and a Sunday School teacher. She has also been a Handbell player at First United Methodist Church and Our Savior Lutheran Church for many years. 15 years ago Pam started a fund-raising baking project to support her daughter's involvement in an underprivileged camp for children in Atlanta. Her efforts created, "World's Best Hamentaschen" a cookie that celebrates the Jewish holiday of Purim. For a couple of weeks in the spring thousands of these cookies are being baked using Pam's recipe and fund raising efforts have expanded to Palm Beach Gardens and her daughter's youth group in Highland Park, Illinois. When asked why she devotes so much time volunteering, she replied, "It is just the right thing to do. I look around the community and see so many needs and organizations that are doing a lot of good work that relies on people giving of their time and talent." Pam also feels commissioned by Jewish phrase: tikkum olam, which translates as 'repair the world.' She interprets this to mean: Do what you can. Go out and make the world a better place, not just for yourself and your family but for people and the planet as a whole. Pam has certainly taken that to heart. She is also inspired by her mother and a group of volunteers called the 'Care-a-vanners' who work with Habitat for Humanity by traveling the country in their RV's doing volunteer construction work at various building sites for weeks at a time. In whatever spare time Pam has she enjoys her musical interest, sewing, knitting, crocheting, biking, swimming and reading. She encourages everyone to get involved. "For just about every interest/passion you might have, there is an organization out there that can use your help." You are so right Pam! Thank you for all that you do.

If you are a senior or have aging parents or loved ones, you know how challenging it can be to remain educated on all topics facing our elderly today. With the help of the Internet it has become much easier to research and gather information. However, the wealth of information does not guarantee that everything will go smoothly. Often there will be conflicting information and deciphering all of your research soon becomes a full-time job. Making choices is not easy and undoubtedly not every choice made for ourselves or loved ones will have the desired outcome. When dealing with a loved one, one can never be too careful. At Champion we deal with these issues every day. You can have peace of mind in knowing that with Champion you will receive quality care from the utmost professionals. We can help with as little or as much as you need assistance with. Why not give us a call to explore the options that are available? We pride ourselves on the fact that we treat those in our care just like family!

HEALTH TIP
THESE SUPPLEMENTS MAY PREVENT ALZHEIMER'S
Dr. David Pearlmutter of Naples, Florida, author of THE BETTER BRAIN BOOK, recommends taking 500 mg. of Vitamin C and 400 IU of Vitamin E daily, saying you will be 88% less likely to develop Alzheimer's Disease or Dementia. He claims that these nutrients are so essential for repairing brain cells that they should be called "smart pills".

.... AND SPEAKING OF VITAMINS
A PRODUCT WE LIKE
.
Finally! A vitamin manufacturer has packaged their product in a transparent bottle. You not only can see the number of pills inside, you can see the size of them. No more 'horse pills' to swallow! Why didn't someone think of this before? The products can be found at our local drugstores. The manufacturer, REXALL SUNDOWN is located in Boca Raton, FL and we do like to support our Florida companies!

ARE YOU HEARING "I'M BORED" MORE OFTEN?
TRY THIS.....

Bored Jar: This is how it works.
If a child complains of boredom they have to pick a slip & do the activity, good or bad. It might be going for ice cream or it might be cleaning their room. The anticipation of what will be drawn is always fun. Have your child help determine what the choices will be. That way he/she will feel like they participated and less like they are being punished if and when they draw a chore instead of a fun event.

SAVINGS TIP OF THE WEEK!
SAVE ON COLLEGE TEXTBOOKS
Many of our Flashers have kids that will soon be starting or returning to college. One expense that may come as an unpleasant surprise is the cost of textbooks. They have gone up considerably since most of us were in school with some costing well over $100! Your students might find used ones at a store near campus, but if not, do an online search. Here are just two of many:
www.textbookx.com - buy new at a discount or used for half or more off
or
www.chegg.com - rent at a very reasonable price for the semester

4 MINUTE HOMEMADE RANCH DRESSING
Once you make this simple dressing you will probably never buy another bottle and it only takes 4 minutes to make!
INGREDIENTS
1 cup mayonnaise
1 cup buttermilk or 1 cup yogurt
2 teaspoons parsley (chopped fresh or dried)
1 teaspoon onion powder
1/2 teaspoon garlic powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 dash dill weed
1/8 teaspoon pepper
DIRECTIONS
Get out a medium sized bowl.
Measure the mayonnaise into it.
Gradually whisk in the buttermilk or yogurt.
Then add the seasonings. Whisk again.
Or you can make it in the blender by putting everything into the blender and whirling until smooth.
The mixture will be a little thin, but it will thicken on standing. Store in a pint size jar, makes 2-cups.
Keep in the refrigerator for a few weeks.
If desired, you may add a tablespoon of Parmesan Cheese and/or a tablespoon of lemon juice to the dressing in addition to the seasonings above.

VIDEO OF THE WEEK
WHAT A TALENT!!
Steve Bridges is an impersonator of Presidents who does such an incredible job that it's hard to tell the real from the carbon copy! He not only has the different voices correct, he also uses prosthetic makeup to create a likeness to his subject. This is a brief video of him doing Presidents Clinton, George W. Bush and Obama. When you have time, you will enjoy watching some of the ones on the left sidebar, - especially when he appeared with Bush himself at the Washington Press Correspondents Dinner pictured above.
