Summertime

"SUMMERTIME" - A painting by Mary Cassatt

"Summertime, and the livin' is easy" say the lyrics in this song from George Gershwin's  PORGY AND BESS and we couldn't agree more!  We love summertime in Vero. The temperature may climb, but we always have an ocean breeze. The kids are out of school and you may be able to sleep a little later. There's not as much traffic and you can  get good parking spots around town.  With so many of our residents heading to their northern vacation homes, Vero activity may  slow down, but you'll find plenty to do in this issue. And since Father's Day is a week from Sunday, you'll want to get something special for Dad. We know how hard it is to shop for a man, so FLASH has tried to come up with some different ideas. (Scroll through our posts to find some gifts that you may not have even known existed.) And be sure to relax and enjoy these lazy days of summer.

CAROL DERENZO
CAROL DERENZO
IS A POSITIVE PERSON

About a year ago  we featured Al DeRenzo as a Positive Person and we thought it was about time that we recognized his wife Carol with the same honor. This 'dynamic duo'  was first brought to our attention by Habitat for Humanity.   Carol and Al do almost everything as a team, but  Carol makes one specific contribution herself. Carol is one of the volunteer artists who paint and decorate  birdhouses made from scrap lumber from Habitat construction sites.  These are then sold at the Habitat Home Center and various events in our city. Al set Carol up with a band saw and other tools in a workshop in their garage where she creates these mini masterpieces. Some of the birdhouses even have glass trim including  real glass windows. Proceeds from the Birdhouse Project go toward the Habitat Scholarship Program that provides funding for children of Habitat homeowners who want to further their education. Carol, along with husband Al, has taken a personal interest in some of these young people and has served as a mentor to them.

Carol and Al have two children: Josh, an attorney in Kentucky and Kara, a teacher in Tampa. When she's not decorating birdhouses, Carol likes to knit and crochet, and has given away many of her knitted scarves.  When Kara accompanied her Dad on a mission trip to Romania, Carol sent along several of the scarves to give to the women  there.

Carol and Al moved to Florida from Michigan about 20 years ago, but they have  been in Vero  a little less than five years. In that short time, they have made a tremendous impact on our community. The people at Habitat have said. "Carol and Al are true treasures - dedicated and giving - and we at Habitat are blessed that they have chosen to share their time, talent and treasure with us." Thank you, Carol, for all that you have done and we are thrilled to recognize you as the POSITIVE PERSON you are and we thank you for all that you do.

 sun exposure

SUN EXPOSURE FACTS

1)  Protecting your skin during the first

18  years of life can reduce the risk of

some  skin cancers by up to 78%

2) One severe sunburn within the first 15

years can double the risk of sun cancer.

3) Cataracts are also linked to sun exposure so always use sun glasses

4) You only need 15 minutes of sun exposure several times a week for your

     body to make vitamin D

Here are ways you can combat the sun!

Wearable Sunscreen

1) New clothing lines are now offering added protection in the form of built-in UPF (Ultraviolet Protection Factor) levels.

while an average white t-shirt has a UPF level of 5, both Uniqlo's new UV Cut collection ($12.90 - $29.90 http://www.uniqlo.com/uv/us/) and Mott 50 ($55 - $145 http://www.mott50.com/) have UPF levels of 50 and will protect against harmful UVA rays that can penetrate clothing and contribute to skin cancer and aging.  d

Works while wet

2) Half the fun of being out in the sun is cooling off in the water. Unfortunately how many times have you tried to apply sunscreen to damp skin, only to notice it's not being absorbed? Neutrogena's new Wet Skin Sunblock Spray is designed specifically for this purpose. You apply directly onto we skin and spary technology cuts through water to form a protective UVA/UVB barrier. Bottles come in SPF of 30,50,85+ and kids 70 ($8.99-$10.99; Neutrogena.com).

Fun for kids

3) Lastly, any parent who has ever struggled to put sunscreen on their child knows that it can be a challenge. SunBow colored sunblock may help them stay still with bubblegum-scented sprays and lotios that go on in color and dry clear. With hues ranging from SpongeBob Squarepats Yellow to Dora the Explorer Pink, the fun fading colors will entertain the little ones and help you to not miss a spot while they are squirming to get free.   OVARIAN CANCER - THE SILENT KILLER

Early detection is the key to beating it and now they have found four subtle symptoms that may be early warning signs. To learn more,  Click Here.

DONALD TRUMP REALLY "LET'S HIS HAIR DOWN!"

Finally, 'the Donald" explained his hair! Here in his own words is what he told ROLLING STONE in an interview last month:

"OK, what I do is, wash it with Head and Shoulders. I don't dry it, though. I let it dry by itself. It takes about an hour. Then I read papers and things.... He goes on, "I also watch TV. I love Fox, I like Morning Joe, I like that the Today show did a beautiful piece on me yesterday - I mean, relatively speaking. OK, so I've done all that. I then comb my hair. Yes, I do use a comb." He pauses, frowning, casting his mind back to capture the details of the event. "Do I comb it forward? No, I don't comb it forward." He pushes the leading edge of the flying wing of his hair back, to show where the hairline is. "I actually don't have a bad hairline. When you think about it, it's not bad. I mean, I get a lot of credit for comb-overs. But it's not really a comb-over. It's sort of a little bit forward and back. I've combed it the same way for years. Same thing, every time."

CONVERSATION GAME

This will not only keep the kids entertained, but the adults too, and you might be surprised at what you learn about your family!

Here are suggested topics:

1.  Assuming you have basics like food and shelter, name five other things you

     couldn't live without.

2.  What 3 foods would you want if you were stranded on a desert island.

(Remember you might have to eat them forever.)

3.  What is your favorite or funniest memory.

4.  Name your 3 favorite books or movies.

5.  What is your favorite song... First? - Second? - Third?

You can also play this 'backwards' by having one family member try to guess the answers another will give.

 A PRODUCT WE LIKE!

SUPER GLUE

We have thrown out so many tubes of Super Glue          after the first use,- it's about time someone came up      with this! Recently we found this package that contains six tiny tubes of the glue that are each good for only a single use. We bought ours at an office supply store.

NOTE: If you ever get Super Glue on your skin,  Acetone will remove it. Acetone is often found in

nail polish remover, and a small amount on the end of a Q-tip or cotton swab applied directly to the glue should dissolve the bond without damaging the skin. Check the label to make sure the remover contains Acetone.

A DIFFERENT GIFT IDEA FOR DAD!
Father's Day will be a week from Sunday on June 19th. If you're trying to think of something special for the man in your family, there is still time to order a DVD from the PUBLIC BROADCASTING (PBS) website and they have quite a selection! One that was on the air recently that we liked is the history of  the MEDAL OF HONOR. It covers the historyof the medal from the Civil War to modern times. It is both emotional and fascinating, with battle clips and testimony from many living veterans. There are other historical DVDs,  but there are also several from the sports world, as well as mucic and comedy.  To browse, Click Here.

3.Seal cereal, chip and other snack bags with a clothespin.

4.Make an instant bib for baby with a dish towel clipped with  one.

5.To protect fingers, use a clip-on clothespin to hold nails when hammering in hard-to-reach places.

6.Hang up a length of ribbon and use clothespins in your child's room to display his artwork.

Is there anything we can't learn on the internet? This was certainly new to us! The video we liked best was this easy math formula for learning chords, - something we always had trouble doing! However, if you know nothing at all about the piano, go to this site and look at the sidebar on the right. You should find lessons for absolute beginners or even how to play by ear. (If you can't find the right one for you, type the phrase in the search bar.) SAVINGS TIP OF THE WEEK!

BEWARE THE "30 DAY FREE TRIAL"!

We know a few people who have been hit with unexpected charges when they signed on to get one of these "free" deals. The deals  turned out to be a monthly delivery of the product at a very high cost and the recipient's credit card  is charged every month. The product continues to arrive in the mail each month until the customer cancels.  The company has the card on file because it is required for "shipping charges" for the 'freebie'. These terms are not noticed by the customer because they are frequently buried in the small print of "terms of use". Some products to be wary of include teeth whitening, skin creams and certain magazines.
