   WELCOME!

It's June! - the month known for weddings and graduations, but there's a lot of other stuff going on this month, too. This week is National Fishing Week. (Scroll down for our post on fishing.) June 14th is Flag Day when we honor 'Old Glory'. June 21st is officially the first day of summer. (Yes, we know it already feels like it's here!)  June 19th is Father's Day, but most fathers we know hope to be celebrating this week because the Miami Heat are playing in the NBA finals! (We've gotta' be for the home team, right?!) You'll find the schedule in a post below. In fact, we have a lot for the men in this issue. Don't miss the video recipe for the grill, and we have some other tips we think you'll like! However, along with all the fun things in June...well, you know what they say, -"Into each life a little rain must fall." And we hope it will be just a "little" because hurricane season began on June 1st. (It seems like it just ended, doesn't it?) Be prepared, by reviewing our checklist in this issue.

COLLEEN COPPOLA

Colleen Coppola
IS A POSITIVE PERSON!

The picture above of Colleen Coppola and her escort Will Schaub was taken at the recent Sebastian River High School prom. It looks like one of the usual prom photos we see this time of year, and we love the picture, but there is nothing "usual" about this extraordinary young lady! Colleen was selected as Youth Volunteer of the Year by the Indian River School District. Colleen, who was nominated by Liberty Magnet School, has been a very active senior at Sebastian River High School, but in her spare time, she has volunteered at  Liberty where she has been a huge help to teachers, staff, and students. Her participation in three programs in particular has been invaluable. Colleen organized, labeled and displayed all the reading material used in the Buddy Readers program. She also organized a system for the children to be able to take these books home to enjoy with their families. In addition, Colleen organized all the reading, math, and Spanish summer assignments turned in by students who participated in the Principal's Challenge, and she created a bulletin board in the school's main hallway to display their work. Finally, Colleen put binders together to facilitate the Earobics computer program for K-2 teachers and students. Colleen has always shown extraordinary interest and enthusiasm in whatever tasks she tackles at Liberty Magnet School. When asked what aspect of her volunteer work she most enjoyed, she was quick to reply that it was helping the children to read. Colleen says she loves reading so much herself and she hopes she has instilled that same love in the children she worked with. Colleen's rightfully proud parents are John and Carol Coppola of Sebastian. Colleen will attend Florida Gulf Coast University in the fall where she plans to major in social work, - a perfect choice for an outstanding young lady! Congratulations Colleen! We can't wait to hear what you accomplish next!

                                     HEALTH TIP

                                BOOST YOUR BRAINPOWER !

       internet search

According to a  research study out of UCLA, surfing the internet  exercises your brain more than reading a textbook. It states that searching the net increases blood flow to those areas of the brain that help us with complex reasoning....and we must add, it's a lot more fun than reading a book on Calculus!

TREATMENT FOR JELLYFISH STINGS

You may have heard that over 400 people were stung by jellyfish in Cocoa Beach last week over the long holiday weekend. When the wind is strong, it does wash them ashore. The most common treatment for jellyfish stings is to soak the area with vinegar, and apply Benadryl to help relieve the itchiness. Do not put fresh water or ice on the sting. To learn why and to read more about treatment, Click Here
 FLAG ETIQUETTE
flag1

Last week, when we mentioned that the American flag is flown at "half mast" on Memorial Day, we received a correction from  Michael Kiefer, Sr.,  U.S. Navy, Retired, that the correct term is "half staff" and that only when it is on a ship is it described as "half mast." (Leave it to a Navy man to set us straight!) Thanks for the 'heads up,' Mike!  In the early years of our country, there were no rules governing the display of our flag, but on March 1, 1954, President Dwight Eisenhower issued a directive that became the official U.S. Flag Code. Since Flag Day is June 14th, you might want to brush up on your flag etiquette at this link.  SOME DIFFERENT
HURRICANE TIPS
Most of us who have lived in Florida for awhile are familiar with what to do in the event of a hurricane. The obvious things on your check list are to have canned food, flashlights, batteries, etc. However, the   website below has more unusual tips. One good idea is to video your home and possessions before a storm in case you have to file an insurance claim for damage. And remember 'cash is king' in the event of a power outage. To learn more, Click Here.

#1 Siesta Beach, Sarasota, Florida

BEST BEACH IN AMERICA?

Pictured above is Siesta Beach in Sarasota, FL which was just named the "Best Beach in America for 2011." The beaches on the West Coast with their white powder sand are so different  from our beaches here. We love our surf, but it's fun to explore the calmer waters of the Gulf. It's  about a  3 1/2 hour drive over Route #60 and well worth the trip. Other Florida beaches to make the cut were St. George Island State Park in the Florida Panhandle at #6 and the Cape Florida State Park on Key Biscayne in Miami at #10 with its historic lighthouse. For the complete list and some other fun beach info, Click Here.

Sterling resorts on the Gulf Coast is offering their "Tanks for Staying" promotion that issusterlinges up to $100 gas credit to those that hold on to their gas receipts. There are some stipulations, - one of which is that you must book before June 30th. Click Here for more details.

MARTHA STEWART WEDDING WEBSITE

wedding centerpiece ideas

This website is a terrific site for brides and their mothers to peruse. It's offers many wedding ideas including centerpieces. An  inexpensive idea Martha suggests is grouping individual blooming flowerpots on each table then giving them to guests as souvenirs. We think it would be fun  to save them for the bride and groom to start their own flower garden. You can paint the pots, but it would be easier to cover them in fabric, tied on with a satin ribbon in the bride's colors. (This is a pretty idea for other parties, too!)  Click Here

 KNOW YOUR FISH!

The fish pictured here is a Dolphin, known on restaurant menus as Mahi-Mahi. Have you ever wondered why the change to Mahi-Mahi? Well, it is so this type of dolphin is not confused with those other playful Dolphin mammals like Flipper; which look nothing like this. Since this week is National Fishing Week, if you're new to fishing in Florida or if your kids are becoming interested in the sport, there's no better place to pick up some tips than Florida's Fish and Wildlife Commission's (FWC) website. You can learn rules and regulations, as well as how to identify the many different species in Florida waters. We especially like this chart for saltwater species which has terrific pitures, as well as tips on hooking them and record sizes caught. To view, Click Here.

ASHLEY RUSSELL WINS FIRST PLACE AT THE 35TH BLUE WATER OPEN

ashley winsAshley Russell, fishing aboard Captain Mike Bertin's Ambush, reeled in the 33.0 pound dolphin that won the top $5,000 prize, the Lady Angler title, and the Mahi Moolah at the 35th Annual Exchange Club Blue Water Open Dolphin Mania Charity Fishing Tournament. The dolphin-only tournament weigh-in was held Saturday, May 21, at the Fort Pierce City Marina. Twenty of the 63 boats fishing weighed in fish. The Foundation awarded total prizes of $10,000. Proceeds benefit local projects for prevention of child abuse.

GUCCI!...ONLINE SALE FOR MEN AND WOMEN

Gucci is having a huge online sale! Of course, when designers like Gucci have a sale, it just means that something that usually costs $2,500 has been reduced to a  'mere' $1,500.  Anyway, it's always fun to explore these

sites whether you buy or not, and it does keep you up to date on what's in style! To take a look, Click Here.
