IS A POSITIVE PERSON

Charlie Pope has lived in Vero Beach for the past 9 years. He has been married to his wife, Chris, for 25 years and considers finding his 'soul mate' his biggest accomplishment! He worked for 35 years in the wholesale hardware business and has been retired for 17 years.  After retiring he and Chris lived on their sailboat for eight years and covered 30,000 miles. Charlie brought his love of sailing with him to Vero and one day a conversation with a friend led to a discussion about forming a youth sailing program. It only takes a spark to start the fire and that was the spark. They soon were collaborating to form a Board of Directors and with the city's  help on a workshop, they began what today is known as the Youth Sailing Foundation of IRC. This program is one of the truly rare and tremendous gems this community has to offer its children. Think back to when you were a child. Can you imagine building your own sailboat and then learning the skills to Captain it yourself?  Well, that is what the YSF program is all about and in the past two years since its inception, Charlie has been a driving force behind the success of this program. He believes strongly in the program and the opportunity it affords children in our area regardless of financial ability. He states, "Children learning to sail alone in an 8 foot boat with supervised licensed instructors is an opportunity and experience that will provide a lifetime memory."  Charlie has contributed countless hours to building this program and his reward comes from the children's faces when they Captain a boat alone. The children come from all backgrounds and pleasure is also gained from watching how well they all blend and get along. Charlie wouldn't be Charlie if he didn't give credit to his board, other volunteers and the City of Vero Beach. There are enthusiastic supporters who have donated boats for the children who cannot afford to buy a boat. The city too has been very supportive with offering YSF a workshop and space to store their boats. The Vero Power Squadron has also been enormously supportive with offering their building for classroom training and donating boats. I encourage all FLASHERS to keep an eye on this program and visit their web site http://www.ysfirc.org/. It is amazing what Charlie and his Board have been able to accomplish in two short years.  This summer will be the first year that they will be offering a summer camp. Again, it is the support and generosity of others,(in this case the Moorings), that is making this possible. Thank you Charlie for contributing in such a big and positive way to our community. I dare say you are laying the groundwork for a lot of children that when they retire might just follow in your footsteps and take to the seas for a few years. Take a word of advice from  Charlie and find some time to get involved in a worthwhile project.  Charlie is giving the kids so much more than just sailing lessons. Mark Twain  once said, ..."Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do, -  So, throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover!"..... Mark Twain would have liked Charlie!

Indian River Charter High School Students

 Help to Restore Lagoon

Indian River Charter High School students are helping to restore the Mosquito Lagoon. With the leadership of Zoology teacher Terry Linley, IRCHS students worked with C.J. Greene of The Nature Conservancy to make oyster mats for the Mosquito Lagoon Oyster Restoration Project. The oyster mats, made of 36 empty oyster shell halves attached with zip ties to a 16" by 16" grid of aquamarine grade mesh, are used to restore oyster reefs. In one school day, 42 students made 67 oyster mats. "I chose this exercise because the quality of water in the lagoon is important to the health of everyone who lives near or in the lagoon, including humans and animals. One adult oyster filters about 50 gallons per day of water, thereby improving water quality," shares Linley. Students learned about oysters and their benefit to the environment; she hopes they too were inspired to become lifelong volunteers.

THE LOVE BUGS ARE BACK!

LOVE BUGS

So many wonderful thoughts and moments are ushered in with summer.  Carefree days, laughter, children at play, the nesting sea turtles, camp, family vacations, long daylight hours, home-made ice cream! And the love bug...a not so wonderful thing! If you are tired of having these insects splatter and bake on to your car's bumper, we have a solution.  You can use WD40 or Pam cooking spray to coat the front of your car.  The application of such lubricants ensures less elbow grease when you hose off your car to get rid of these pesky insects! Good luck, and instead of letting these insects steal the pleasure of the day...take a breath and remember all of the wonderful things that ride the coat tails of the summer winds and don't miss our week's recipe for homemade mango ice cream!

dentistHEALTH TIP

 PROTECT YOUR TEETH FROM CAVITIES

We've always heard that sugar was bad for your teeth, but we really didn't know why. According to Dr. Mark Helpin of Temple University's School of Dentistry, here's the reason. After eating just one piece of candy, your mouth becomes acidic and it takes up to one hour for the pH balance to return to normal. The longer the teeth are exposed to acid, the greater chance of cavities. If you can't brush your teeth after eating sweets, try to at least rinse your mouth with water. Make sure your kids know this tip to save trips to the dentist!

CANCER FACTS YOU NEED TO KNOW

                       By Bob Valentino

Part 2 of a two part series

In part 1 we outlined the pros and cons of various forms of cancer treatment. In this segment let's look into an effective way to battle cancer cells by not feeding them with the foods they require in order to multiply. CANCER CELLS FEED ON:

a. Sugar substitutes like NutraSweet, Equal, Spoonful, etc are made with Aspartame and it is harmful. A better natural substitute would be Manuka honey or molasses, but only in very small amounts. Table salt has a chemical added to make it white in color Better alternative is Bragg's aminos or sea salt.

b. Milk causes the body to produce mucus, especially in the gastro-intestinal tract. Cancer feeds on mucus. By cutting off milk and substituting with unsweetened soy milk cancer cells are being starved.

c. Cancer cells thrive in an acid environment. A meat-based diet is acidic and it is best to eat fish, and  little other meat, like chicken. Meat also contains livestock antibiotics, growth hormones and parasites, which are all harmful, especially to people with cancer.

d. A diet made of 80% fresh vegetables and juice, whole grains, seeds, nuts and a little fruit helps put the body into an alkaline environment. About 20% can be from cooked food including beans. Fresh vegetable juices provide live enzymes that are easily absorbed and reach down to the cellular level within 15 minutes, to nourish and enhance growth of healthy cells. To obtain live enzymes for building healthy cells, drink fresh vegetable juice (that includes most vegetables and bean sprouts), also eat some raw vegetables 2 or 3 times a day. Enzymes are destroyed at
temperatures of 104 degrees F (40 degrees C).

e. Avoid coffee, tea, and chocolate, which have high caffeine Green tea is a better alternative and has cancer fighting properties. It is best to drink purified water, or filtered, to avoid known toxins and heavy metals in tap water. Distilled water is acidic, avoid it.

f. Meat protein is difficult to digest and requires a lot of digestive enzymes. Undigested meat remaining in the intestines, becomes putrefied, and leads to more toxic buildup.

g. Cancer cell walls have a tough protein covering. By refraining from, or eating less meat, it frees more enzymes to attack the protein walls of cancer cells, and allows the body's killer cells to destroy the cancer cells.

h. Some supplements build up the immune system (IP6, Flor-ssence, Essiac, anti-oxidants, vitamins, minerals, EFAs etc.) to enable the bodies own killer cells to destroy cancer cells.. Other supplements like vitamin E are known to cause apoptosis, or programmed cell death, the body's
normal method of disposing of damaged, unwanted, or unneeded cells.

i. Cancer is a disease of the mind, body, and spirit. A proactive and positive spirit will help the cancer warrior be a survivor. Anger, un-forgiveness and bitterness put the body into a stressful and acidic environment. Learn to have a loving and forgiving spirit. Learn to relax and enjoy life.

j. Cancer cells cannot thrive in an oxygenated environment. Exercising daily, and deep breathing help to get more oxygen down to the cellular level. Oxygen therapy is another means employed to destroy cancer cells.

k. No plastic containers in microwave,  No water bottles in freezer,  No plastic wrap in microwave.

SAVINGS TIP

REVIEW YOUR BILLS FOR ERRORS

According to New York based financial advisor, Gary Schatsky, not reviewing your bills for errors is a missed savings opportunity. There are frequently errors on phone bills and credit card charges. A surprising one is errors on hospital bills. According to Gary, patients pay an estimated average of $1300 in overcharges per year, so he suggests that you always ask for an itemized statement.
