The Origin of April Fool's Day
Tomorrow will be April Fool's Day and you might want to know how it got started. The tradition began in 1582 in France. Prior to that year, the New Year was celebrated for eight days, beginning on March 25th and ending on April 1st. Charles IX, introduced the new Gregorian Calendar and New Year's Day was moved to January 1st. News traveled slowly back then and many people didn't get the message for several years! Some refused to accept the new calendar and continued to celebrate the new year on April 1st. These backward folk were labeled as "fools" by the general populace. They were subject to some ridicule, and were often sent on "fools errands" or were made the brunt of other practical jokes. This eventually evolved into a tradition of prank-playing on the first day of April that spread to England and Scotland and was later introduced to the American colonies.
|
|
NOTE: Here are a few harmless pranks you can pass on to your kids.
1. Push tissue or paper towels in the toes of a family member's shoes. They won't know it's there and won't be able to put them on.
2. Tie the socks in a drawer together so when one is removed they will all come out.
3. Set someone's alarm clock back an hour earlier. (ouch)
4. Tell someone that they have a bug on their back. They'll dance around swatting, trying to get it off!
5. If you have a spray nozzle on your kitchen sink, place a rubber-band around it so that the next person who turns on the water gets a little April Fool shower.
|
And remember to shout "April Fool!"

'WATTS UP' WITH LIGHTBULBS?
SHEDDING LIGHT ON THE SUBJECT!
A lot of people are not very happy about the new energy saving CFLs (compact fluorescent lightbulbs). They're dimmer, funny looking, don't turn on right away and you can't throw them in the trash because they contain mercury. You have to recycle them at designated collection sites. (I wonder how many people do this.)
Here's what the government says to do if a CFL breaks: "First, have all people and pets leave the room. Second, open a window and air the place out. (It doesn't tell you how to open a window after you have left the room!) Place cleanup materials in a sealable container and place that outdoors in a sealed container until materials can be disposed of properly." (Scary, huh? )
The old-fashioned Incandescent bulbs are still going to be made, but they will have to meet new government standards which will make them more expensive. The only other alternative is an LED (Light Emitting Diode) bulb which works on a computer chip. It's more expensive, but it's non-toxic and will burn 50,000 hours. (A fluorescent bulb lasts about 1,200 and a CFL lasts about 10,000 hours.) An LED light can cost $20.00 or more per bulb, but since it is non-toxic and lasts so much longer it might be an option worth exploring. |

Are you so overwhelmed by taking care of someone else that you have neglected your own physical, mental and emotional well-being? If you find yourself without the time to take care of your own needs, you may be putting yourself and your health at risk. Here are some tips from the Alzheimer's Association on how you can manage stress.
1. Understand what's going on as early as possible. Symptoms of Alzheimer's may appear gradually. It can be easy to explain away changing or unusual behavior when a loved one seems physically healthy. Instead, consult a doctor when you see changes in memory, mood or behavior. Don't delay; some symptoms are treatable.
2. Know what resources are available. Contact your local Alzheimer's Association office. The staff can help you find Alzheimer care resources in your community: Adult day programs and in-home health care, such as the services supplied by CHAMPION HOME HEALTHCARE. We have Aides, Nurses and Therapists that can help you manage daily tasks.
3. Become an educated caregiver. As the disease progresses, new care giving skills may be necessary. The Alzheimer's Association offers programs to help you better understand and cope with the behaviors and personality changes that often accompany Alzheimer's.
4. Get help. Trying to do everything by yourself will leave you exhausted. Seek the support of family, friends and community resources. Bring in outside help. CHAMPION HOME HEALTHCARE can give you a respite from the demands of constant care. Call CHAMPION before stress becomes overwhelming.
5. Take care of yourself. Watch your diet, exercise and get plenty of rest. Making sure that you stay healthy will help you be a better caregiver. Providing Care is Our Business, Caring is Our Nature

APRIL FOOL RECIPE
This famous book from Dr. Seuss's ends with these words:
" I do so like green eggs and ham! Thank you! Thank you, Sam-I-am!" Surprise your family with them tomorrow and we bet they'll like them too and they will start their day with a giggle. You can add a little chopped spinach to make them even 'greener' !
GREEN EGGS AND HAM
Beat together several eggs
Add a few drops of green food coloring to desired color
(The kids would love to mix in the color!)
Add cubed ham or small squares of deli ham
Add chopped fresh or frozen spinach (optional)
Generously spray Pam (butter flavor) on a skillet
(Add more butter if desired)
Pour egg mixture in pan and stir constantly until just firm.
Serve with a smile!
