AMELIA STRAZZULLA

headbands for hopeAMELIA

IS A POSITIVE PERSON

Amelia Strazzulla is a Senior at Indian River Charter High School and is using her artistic passions to make a difference. "While most of my peers are out at night, squeezing every drop of 'fun' out of their senior year, I'm at home, squeezing scalding, sticky paste out of a hot-glue gun to craft headbands for the project I created, Headbands for Hope," comments Strazzulla. Headbands for Hope donates all profits to "Equity Fights AIDS," a fundraising and grant-making organization, affiliated with Broadway Cares, with all monies raised for HIV/AIDS research. "Their mission statement, to give back by doing what they love, inspired me," shares Strazzulla. "Because of the opportunities I was given by my parents, I possess a strong passion for giving back to people in need." Amelia hopes to raise at least $500.00 dollars by the end of April by selling what she calls, "little pieces of art atop my head." Each headband is one-of-kind and feature items such as antique broaches, feathers, age themes and other cutesy treasures. "It gives me great pleasure to see people wearing my tiny works of art around school and town and even greater joy to know that the money is going to be used for such a great cause." To find out how you can get your hands on these haute hair accessories, contact IRCHS Public Relations at kelly.dixon@irchsonline.org.

                  FLASHLIGHT  EASTER  EGG  HUNT!

IT'S SO MUCH FUN!

flashlight egg hunt

Your kids may be too old for the Easter Bunny, but they never outgrow the candy he brings!  A few years ago, one of our staff members had a nighttime egg hunt.  Along with her own teenagers, she invited other families with teens and 'tweens,' instructing them to each bring their own flashlight. She had hidden many candy-filled plastic eggs around the yard earlier in the day. When night fell, the group was turned loose with their flashlights and a wonderful time was had by all! Warning: Be prepared for your guests to request that this be an annual affair!

        ANOTHER FUN, 'EGGSCELENT' EASTER PROJECT!

eggs and flowers

Last week we shared the idea of growing herbs in eggshells.  This week we share another idea from "Martha." You can place some flowers into your cracked eggs to make simple, yet beautiful, Easter decorations. Team FLASH is expanding on this idea to make personalized place settings for our Easter gathering. This is a fun project that you can do alone or with your children. Dye your Easter eggs with all of the beautiful designs and colors as usual. You can then write your guest's names on the egg or you can write it in crayon before dying. The finished project will secure your guest's spot at your table and will be whimsical, fun, festive and different and that is what we try to promote in our weekly issues of FLASH. ENJOY!

Considered one of the greatest baseball players of all time, Ty Cobb was also known for his aggressive, surly and combative demeanor. In Cobb, Lee Blessing examines this into three differently aged versions of himself: The Peach, a teenager at the beginning of his long career; Ty, in his forties and near the end of his playing days; and Mr. Cobb, in his early seventies and near the end of his life.   THE SANDWICH GENERATION

Grown children caught   in  the 'Caregiving  Shuffle' are known as the Sandwich Generation. They are the ones caught between caring for their aging parents and their children at the same time. These individuals are torn between the many responsibilities that come with parenting, elder care, and the rest of what is called life. The effects of caring for elderly parents is probably most taxing for the caregiver, however; it can also have a devastating effect on the entire family, especially young children who need their parents most. "There are only so many hours in the day. When the role of caregiver is added to someone's plate, something has got to give and it is usually time with the immediate family of the caregiver. Time spent at soccer games, and family outings are examples of what may be the first to go, disrupting the caregiver's family life. But caring for your loved one doesn't have to mean lack of care for your kids -- in fact, involving children in the caregiving process may prove worthwhile and rewarding for all involved. "I've seen it where the children found themselves drawn closer to their grandparents," Cunningham recalls, "then I've seen the other end where the kids act out and turn away from the parent . . . because they don't get as much attention." Our staff at Champion can provide you with assistance.  We have licensed, trained staff that can be scheduled by the hour to help provide a needed break. We invite you to visit our website or to call us (772)257-0442.

DIETING? ... MAKE A FIST!

victory war poster lady fist pump sad hill news

This World War II image of "Rosie the Riveter" showed her determination by making a fist and you can too!

If you're tempted by that chocolate chip cookie, just make a fist. This strange bit of advice for dieters comes from a new study published by The Journal of Consumer Research. It found that tightening your muscles when faced with temptation will help your self control. It only works in the moment though, so walk away from the cookie or you'll have to do it again!
