MAUREEN NICOLACE

maureen nicolace.

IS A POSITIVE PERSON

Undoubtedly, if you have been involved in our community, you have come across

Maureen Nicolace. Maureen moved to Vero Beach in 1984 after graduating from Florida Southern College. Her first job was with the Press Journal, and she remembers that during the job interview with John Schumann he actually told her that getting involved in the community was critical. Maureen does not require such prompting however. She chose the course of volunteer extraordinaire many years ago in high school where her involvement was reflected in the multiple Senior Superlative Awards she received: Most Active, most Intelligent, Most Likely to Succeed and Best All-Around. Just last year Maureen was inducted into her Tallahassee high school's 'Hall of Fame' for her civic involvement. Maureen's college community benefited from her involvement as does Vero Beach now. Maureen's involvement has been too vast to include everything so we have chosen to spotlight a handful of contributions. In the 80's she was a founding board member and 2-term president of the North Indian River Unit of the American Cancer Society. In the early 90s she served a 3-year term on the Board of Directors of the Sebastian Chamber of Commerce and was the creator and chair of the chamber's first-ever media auction, which continues into existence today. In the mid 90s she took a lead role on the newly-formed Gifted Task Force for the school district and the subsequent Parent Advocacy Group. Maureen is also a founding board member of the Vero Beach Christian Business Association and has served as the president since 2007. The commitment Maureen has to this organization is tremendous. She enjoys it because it provides her the opportunity to "use her gifts and talents for God's kingdom within our business community." The VBCBA has donated $75,500 to community non profits since it was established in 2004. Prior to starting a family of her own, Maureen demonstrated her commitment to children and to the schools in our community by teaching Junior Achievement and mentoring 4 at-risk children weekly for over seven years. Eighteen years later she still stays in touch with all of them. Her dedication to our schools has been recognized by Maureen being named Volunteer of the Year by Pelican Island Elementary in the mid 90s (before she even had children), and last year as the Parent Volunteer of the Year for Storm Grove Middle School.  Maureen works tirelessly to better our local public schools, and served as the chair for Liberty Magnet Elementary School's School Advisory Council for two years, and she is now finishing up her second year as the Chair SAC for Storm Grove Middle School. In addition, she served on the Community Advisory Committee for Storm Grove for the year prior to the school's opening. Maureen also currently sits on the Board of the IRC Chamber of Commerce and has been on the Tourism Advisory Committee since 1992. She loves to volunteer for Salvation Army Red Kettle Campaign every year and also for Harvest Food & Outreach Center's Annual Turkey Trot every Thanksgiving. She is a member of First Church of God and her business, Nicolace Marketing, selectively provides pro-bono services for various non profits in our community.  Maureen is the Mother to Cassie (12) and Edward III, (11). She is the wife to Ed with whom she will celebrate her 25th wedding anniversary this October.  Her spare time is spent with family and travel baseball that her son plays (plus Little League!). She also tries to find some time for scrapbooking. She is inspired by her children and motivated by her faith in God and the scripture that reads "therefore as you have opportunity, let us do good for all people..." Galatians 6:10. Maureen's advice is to "stay focused on doing what is right, because you choose to, not because you have to. And to anyone with children...make sure they are a significant part of what you choose to do!" Maureen, FLASH is inspired by you and thanks you for all of the wonderful things you have done and continue to do for our community!  You truly are a 'POSITIVE PERSON!'

OOOPS!

Last week our POSITIVE PERSON was LORRAINE NITTINGER. It was correct in our headline, but in the article we referred to her as "Natalie".  Lorraine, we are so sorry and we have no idea where that came from! "Natalie Nittinger" has a certain ring to it, but we like you better as our "Lovely Lorraine"!

HAPPY ST. PATTY'S DAY FLASHERS AND HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO MY MOM.... THE BEST MOM A GIRL COULD EVER HAVE!! :)

St. Patrick, the patron saint of Ireland, is one of Christianity's most widely known figures. Surprisingly, he was born in Britain so he  wasn't really even Irish! However, he is credited with bringing Christianity to Ireland.  For all his celebrity, his life remains somewhat of a mystery, but it is believed that he died on March 17th around 460 A.D. The shamrock is the national symbol of Ireland because, according to legend, St. Pat used the 'three leaves in one'  in his teachings to illustrate the Doctrine of the Holy Trinity. Most shamrocks do  have three leaves, so the 'four leaf clover' is considered extra lucky because it is so unusual.

MEN'S FASHION FOR SPRING - NO SOCKS!

(And a wedding surprise for the men and ladies!)

At the Spring fashion shows for men, (Yes, ladies, they have them too!) most of the men were wearing Espadrilles (pictured above) with no socks. Even some of those in suits were sock-less.  We know many Vero men have already found this to be a cool and comfortable style for our casual lifestyle. Popularized by the TOMS SHOES company, the shoes have a fabric or soft leather upper and a rope or rubber sole.  They now even carry a wedding line, - black velvet or soft black leather for the men and glittery white and colors for the bride and her bridesmaids. The line ranges in price from around $50 - $100, and for every pair you buy, TOMS will give a pair to a child in need through their "One for One' program.  To find a local retailer, go to www.toms.com.

KATE  MIDDLETON'S  STYLE

kate-middleton-style

You may remember what a tremendous influence the late Princess Diana had on the fashion world and it would seem that the beautiful girl who would have been her daughter-in-law is going to follow in Diana's footsteps.  Before becoming engaged to Prince William, Kate Middleton was involved with fashion professionally having been employed as Assistant Accessories Buyer for the JIGSAW fashion stores in the UK.  Her professional talent for fashion is also obvious in her personal wardrobe and she frequently wears a hat.  We're sure  this pleases the Queen, but we wonder if she is equally pleased with Kate's 'minis'. To take a look at Kate's fashions, go to this website  and click on the pics to enlarge. IMPORTANT WARNING!

DON'T PICK UP WATER BOTTLES - CALL 911!

(Be sure to warn children of this danger!)

167934943 f61a850d96 Water Bottles Without the Controversy

Yes, I would pick up a bottle in my front yard or in the mailbox, wouldn't you? But not anymore, thanks to this email I received. Anybody that sees a plastic bottle in their yard would think nothing of picking it up to throw it away. It looks like these 'bottle bombs' are starting to pop up around the U.S. They are made with a little water and common household ingredients. When they are disturbed by the motion of being picked up, they will explode in less than 30 seconds, causing injury to fingers, face and eyes! People are finding this type of bomb in mailboxes and in their yards, just waiting for someone to pick it up intending to put it in the trash. Pass this on to everyone you care about. Check the Snopes web site below to read the entire story and see pictures. It's pretty scary! FYI...Snopes is a great site that you can go to verify emails that you receive

Chest x-ray is one diagnostic test

HEALTH  TIP
DO YOU NEED A CHEST X-RAY?
Did you know that Lung Cancer kills more women every year than Breast Cancer?  This fact comes from the National Lung Cancer Partnership in Madison Wisconsin. Through excellent publicity and education, we have all become aware of the dangers of Breast Cancer, but unfortunately we are less knowledgeable about Lung Cancer. Years ago, when Tuberculosis was a strong threat, mobile vans with chest x-ray equipment were commonly seen, then the medical community began to worry about over-exposure to x-rays. Since then, a chest x-ray is not necessarily even a part of an annual physical exam. Symptoms of Lung Cancer are a persistent cough, shortness of breath,  pain in the back, neck or shoulders or coughing up blood. If any of these sound familiar, see your doctor as soon as possible and ask about getting a chest x-ray.

THINKING OF CHARGING YOUR TAXES? piggy bank

If you're thinking of paying your taxes with a credit card, think again. If you do, you'll pay "convenience fees" between roughly 2% and 4% of your payment. Owe $2,000, and you  may be paying an extra $40 to $80 for the convenience. The higher your taxes, the higher the fees. Even if you get "reward points", they won't equal the value of the penalty. If this is news to you, you're not alone; 68% of Americans don't know about this extra expense. To learn more, read this article from THE WALL STREET JOURNAL.  CLICK HERE
 RECIPE OF THE WEEK

EASY ST. PAT'S DESSERT IDEA
.
This dessert is so simple, we hesitate to call it a recipe. Nevertheless, the cool taste and emerald green color make it a perfect finish to a heavy Irish entree. All you have to do is pour a little green Creme de Menthe Liqueur over vanilla ice cream. You should be able to find the liqueur in miniature bottles, so you could give one to each guest and let them create their own sundae.

NOTE: Pillsbury has come out with a 'slice and bake' Shamrock Cookie. You might want to put one on the side of the sundae.
