Set Your Clocks Ahead on Sat. Night

Dear FLAHSERS:     DON'T FORGET DAYLIGHT SAVINGS TIME

This Saturday night we will all go to bed setting our clocks one hour later....Do you have enough spring to spring forward? Losing that hour can be tough but remember what's in store. It marks the coming of summertime and longer days with a more fun and carefree atmosphere that is often spent enjoying family and dear friends! So grab an extra cup of coffee on Sunday morning and take a moment to relish that first day of extra daylight in the early evening. Plan an outing so that you can fully take advantage of the gift this day presents. Plan a bike outing or a picnic at the beach. If you do have a lot of 'spring' left after springing forward, now is a great time to change those batteries in your smoke detectors!  Happy Daylight Savings Day, FLASHERS!

IS A POSITIVE PERSON

Natalie was brought to our attention by the Red Cross for her incredible service with this organization. Natalie is a Registered Nurse and has freely donated her expertise, time and service to the Red Cross since she first came to them in 2005 when she was deployed to Hurricane Katrina Relief in Client Casework. Since that time she has taught courses for the organization in CPR, First Aid, and AED (automatic external defibrillation) operation. She has also served as a CERT (Community Emergency Response Team) leader and as Captain of a DAT (Disaster Action Team).

Natalie and her husband, Bob, retired to our area seven years ago from New York. Prior to that they moved several times around the country because of his work and she found each of the moves to be  a wonderful experience. They have been married 52 years and are parents to 5 grown children and 18 grandchildren!  She didn't attend college until after her youngest was in school. Obtaining her RN Degree while raising 5 children is truly a remarkable accomplishment! No wonder her advice to others is "Never give up and keep a positive attitude."  Natalie is also a firm believer in prayer, saying it's important to "have faith in God and faith in yourself."  Natalie, we hope your optimism and the 'positive vibes'  you emit will  be contagious and inspire  all of us to give more of ourselves.  Thank you and God bless you !

DOG & DOLPHIN

This lab in a small town in Ireland goes for his morning swim with a "friend". According to residents, when Duggie the dolphin lost her mate in 2006, she stayed in the area off Ireland's Tory island where her partner died. Fortunately, Duggie soon met the seafaring Labrador, Ben, and they've spent their days playing together ever since. When dolphin pods come by, Duggie visits with them for a while, then soon returns to her home and best friend. Amazing! To see the video, CLICK HERE.

WATERPROOF YOUR ELECTRONICS!

 .

At the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas last month, several new products were introduced that will be in stores soon. One we could all use is a vacuum-sealed, clear plastic case called  DRYCASE that waterproofs your cell  phone among other things. It protects it against mishaps that can happen in the rain, on a boat, or (like one case we know) even near a toilet!  It can be completely submerged. You can also cover your camera and use it to take clear underwater pictures and it comes with a jack so you can use your MP3 player. The price ranges from $39.99 to $59.99 depending on size. For more info and how to buy, CLICK HERE.

A Home Fall Prevention Checklist for Older Adults

.

Each year thousands of older Americans fall at home. Many of them are seriously injured, and some are disabled. Falls are often due to hazards that are easy to overlook but easy to fix. This checklist will help you find and fix those hazards in your home.

1) FLOORS  Move the furniture so your path is clear. Use double-sided tape or use rugs with a non-slip backing. Always keep objects such as books, towels, shoes etc. off the floor. Coil or tape cords and wires next to the wall to avoid tripping.

2) STAIRS AND STEPS: Always keep objects off stairs. Have any loose or uneven steps repaired. Make sure there is a light over the stairway and an on/off switch at both the top and bottom.  Handrails are a must! Make sure they are sturdy and you might consider installing on both sides. Make sure that the carpet or flooring is secure.

3) KITCHEN: Keep things you use often on lower shelves and make sure that you step stool is steady. Never use a chair as a step stool.

4) BATHROOMS: Put a non-slip mat or self-stick strips on the tub or shower floor. Install grab bars inside the tub and next to the toilet.

5) BEDROOMS: Place a lamp close to the bed so that it is easy to reach. Light the path from your bed to the bathroom; use a night-light.

6) Other Things You Can Do to Prevent Falls: Exercise regularly to improve balance and coordination. Have Dr. or pharmacist check meds to determine if they can make you sleepy or dizzy. Get up slowly after you sit or lie down. Avoid going barefoot or wearing slippers.

Always keep emergency numbers in large print near each phone.

Champion can provide the help your loved ones may need to remain in their own home. We invite you to visit our website or to call us

 JOIN THE RALLY IN TALLY

FROM MELISSA SCHULMAN:  Reply

Indian River County Council PTA is heading to Tallahassee on March 24, 2011. Help us fill the Bus with Advocates Speaking for Children...every child and one voice! Budget shortfalls have put the future of public education in jeopardy. State Stabilization Funds, which have kept our schools afloat, will sunset

June 30, 2011. Our Legislators must make provisions for an adequate, stable source of funding for education when these funds run out. They need to see us and hear us. The cost is only $30.00 and covers the round trip, tip for driver. Reply to Melissa above if you are interested.
