COLBY LUFKIN

.

IS A POSITIVE PERSON

FLASH believes strongly in our youth and the energy they have to contribute positively and to make a difference.  This week's positive person solidifies that belief. Colby Lufkin is son to Kelly Lufkin and is currently a Junior at Saint Edward's School. He has his eye on several goals and is moving constantly in the direction to make them a reality. One such goal is to "make a positive difference." He has already made great strides in that direction having formed a youth committee for the Guardian Ad Litem (GAL) program his freshman year. He created a Christmas Drive that has generated support of the GAD program and has pulled together an entire community of over 1,000 individuals including:  Colby's peers, local businesses, the Saint Edward's school community, and  others. The Christmas drive helped hundreds of children the first year and has grown to where they were able to help 1,600 children this year! Colby and his youth committee members also plan a movie event each year to raise funds and awareness of GAL.  They sold out the largest theater at the Majestic last year and raised enough money to pay for year round advertising that helps raise awareness of this great program. This year's event will take place on May 8th. So, keep an eye out for more information.

This past August Colby traveled to Orlando where he was the first youth to ever be recognized and awarded the State's Advocacy Award.  He was also the first youth to receive the Community Advocate of the Year Award of 2009 (19th Judicial Circuit). He has received several national awards including: The Prudential Spirit of Community Award, President's Volunteer Service Award and the Discus Award.  Colby is active at school as well and is currently a member of the Student Council. School awards include: the Charles F. Clark Character Award in 2009 and 2010,  has been recognized twice as 'Student of the Month,'  and has been named on Honor Roll and the Dean's List.

Colby wants to attend Notre Dame where he hopes to play football for the fighting Irish! That goal motivates him to rise at 5:30 for an early morning workout. Colby also excels on the field. He received the Sophomore Leadership Award last year as well as receiving All Area Honorable Mention Offensive Lineman.  This year he was recognized as All conference First Team Offensive Lineman.

Colby is an outstanding young man who has already made his mark on this community. He is inspired by his grandfather, Ricky and another personal goal of Colby's is to emulate his grandfather because .. in Colby's own words , "He is the most generous, non-judgmental, kind and unselfish person I know." Well, Colby... I would say you are well on your way!  Congratulations and thank you for all that you have done to leave such a positive mark on this community! You are an inspiration! Keep up the great work!

mardi gras

MARDI GRAS  IS COMING!

.

The Mardi Gras Festival in New Orleans will be next week on 'Fat Tuesday', March 8th. This celebration was brought to the U.S. from France and is to enjoy the things that will be given up for Lent which begins the next day on  Ash Wednesday. (The term  Mardi Gras comes from the French "Mardi" meaning Tuesday and "Gras" meaning fat.) If you want to join in the fun, but can't get out of town ... Plan a last minute Mardi Gras party. Gather your friends and decorate your table in the traditional purple, gold and green colors and scatter a few ropes of inexpensive beads and gold coin candies around.   Ask your guests to come in costume or at least in a mask and put on a New Orleans Jazz CD.  A good conversation topic is, "What are you planning to give up for Lent?" You'll probably get some very interesting answers!  You can make an easy pot of Jambalaya in the crock pot with this recipe: http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/robin-miller/slow-cooker-jambalaya-recipe/index.html. Serve it on rice with a salad, and finish with the Bread Pudding featured below in our 'Recipe of the Week. For more party ideas, CLICK HERE.  http://www.mardigrasday.com/mardigras/adult.php

Make a Stain-Treatment Kit

  MARTHA STEWART'S STAIN KIT

Martha Stewart suggests that you keep this variety of remedies handy for easy stain removal: Cornstarch, to absorb fresh grease stains; oil solvents, or dry-cleaning fluids, for greasy residue; combination solvents and a mild, clear dishwashing liquid for all-purpose stain removal; natural bleaching agents (lemon juice and white vinegar); glycerin, for ballpoint ink; and eyedroppers and cotton swabs, for easy application.

NOTE: In the picture above, there is a can of K2r Spotlifter. This is a product that our FLASH family particularly likes and it saves a lot on dry cleaning. It's particularly good on men's silk ties to remove grease spots. However, it can damage some synthetic fabrics, so read the directions carefully. If you don't find it at your supermarket, check ACE Hardware.

                                                    Marilyn Monroe

    CURVES ARE MAKING A COMEBACK!

Something is going on in Hollywood and on the fashion runways....Celebrities are getting curvier! The fashion industry has finally come to realize that the average woman has trouble visualizing how she would look in an outfit worn by a size zero model! (According to the Centers for Disease Control, the average American woman is a size 14.  She's also 5'3", weighs 164.7 pounds, and has a 37-inch waist.) Marilyn Monroe (pictured above) was around size 10/12. Like most of us, she wasn't an exact size either. Notes from her dressmaker show she measured 37- 23- 36, was 5' 5-1/2" and was a 36D. (That tiny waist may have been helped along by the "waist cinchers" that were popular in the 1950s!) Anyway, it's a trend that is long overdue.         COME FOR THE LAUGHS

March 4th & March 5th

Brian Bradley

COMEDIAN Brian Bradley. Orlando native and UCF Theatre Graduate Brian Bradley is one performer who breaks down the wall between audience and stage. Difficult to categorize, Bradley combines acting, traditional stand-up comedy and improvisation in every show. Audiences are more than simply spectators--- Brian casts them as co-stars.

Mike Rivera

On stage, Mike uses his natural 'high-energy' to describe his experiences growing up in a fun family. Off stage he colors pretty pictures, watches Toy Story a lot, and forces the 3 little people that live in his house to watch tapes of his act. He has been winning the laughter and applause of audiences all over the Country, as well as the attention of many people in the entertainment industry. Mike has been heavily scouted by Comedy Central, MTV, and most recently Twentieth Century Fox.

3 / 50 project

Think for a moment ...

Which three stores would you miss if they disappeared? The key to keeping them around is to patronize them!...especially in this economy. If just half the employed population of the US spent $50 a month that would generate $42,629,700,000 in revenue. Take it down to our community and the impact can still be profound.  The side benefit to patronizing our independent businesses is that the majority of that revenue stays local.  So... Why not stop in this week at one of your favorite little spots. FLASH is certain they will be glad to see you...and they probably even remember your name at those little local shops!

If you want to learn more about the 3 /50 project visit their website

Our FLASH research staff found a link with wedding gown pictures that go back to  Queen Victoria (pictured above)), along with Princess Grace Kelly Ranier, Queen Elizabeth herself and many, many others.
