ATHALIA JONES

Athalia Jones

IS A POSITIVE PERSON

Athalia Jones has been a resident of Vero Beach for the past 8 years.  Five years ago she started volunteering for the American Red Cross and found it to be the perfect fit! She has also been a volunteer for Winners Walk Tall for the past 6 years. She is the parent of two and grandmother to two grandsons. She has worked throughout her life and considers completing her MBA while single parenting two toddlers to be her greatest accomplishment. Athalia has always been active, so sitting around after retirement was simply not an option. Today she stays busy with her volunteer work, crocheting, needlepoint, walking and keeping up with technology. She received the Agnes S. Warhurst Award for extraordinary volunteer service with the Red Cross. Jill Masters, from the Red Cross says, "Athalia Jones volunteers in many different capacities and her willingness to help wherever she is needed can be seen in her many titles: External Relations Lead, Board Chair-Elect, Disaster Chair and HEROES Campaign Chair." These are all key volunteer positions that continuously place Athalia on the frontline helping others. Athalia finds volunteering to be very rewarding and she encourages others to find an organization that is a fit for them. There are so many great local charities and surely a fit exists for everyone!  You are so right Athalia! Thank you for all you do to make a difference in our community!

save gas

WITH THE PRICE OF GAS CLIMBING . . .

   DID YOU KNOW THIS?

1)  It takes 20% to 30% more gas to drive at 70  mph than 50 mph. So, don't drive too fast or too slow.

2) For every pound of underinflation, you can lose up to six percent in gas mileage, so if your tires are five pounds under-inflated, you'll use up to 30% more gas. So, check your tire pressure on a weekly basis!

hooks                     A 'NEAT' IDEA!

Steal this idea from school kindergarten classrooms. Hang hooks in a child's room at their eye level. They will have fun hanging up their belongings.... Just imagine things like backpacks, jackets, bags of blocks, mesh bag of socks, and many other things finding their way to a hook instead of the floor!  Now that's a GREAT IDEA!!

Polish your body to a sparkling healthy glow and moisturize it to softness at the same time with this easy to make brown sugar body scrub.  You probably have everything you need in your kitchen cupboards and are just minutes away from beautifully touchable skin?

  • 1 cup dark brown sugar
  • 1/4 - 1/2 cup olive oil
  • 1/4 tsp vanilla fragrance oil (optional)

Mix the sugar and oil together in a small bowl. Add enough olive oil to moisten the sugar, plus enough to make it into a nice feeling,  moisturizing scrub. Add  the vanilla  fragrance oil, if desired.

Apply liberally in the shower, gently rubbing it into your skin. Rinse with warm water and remember to be careful of the shower floor, as the olive oil can make it slippery!

HEALTH TIP

PISTACHIO NUTS LOWER CHOLESTEROL

Roasted Pistachios (Salted, In Shell)

Pistachios are one of the oldest flowering nut trees, and are one of the only two nuts mentioned in the Bible (Genesis 43:11). (The other is almonds, in case you were wondering.)  Humans have eaten pistachio nuts for at least 9,000 years.  Besides being a delicious snack, a study from Penn State University's  Department  of Nutrition now tells us that the nuts contain healthy fats, are high in antioxidants and are rich in plant sterols which inhibit cholesterol absorption.  A one-ounce = about 49 nuts and has more dietary fiber than 1/2 cup of spinach or broccoli. They're also a good snack for dieters because opening those pesky little shells takes time and you probably will not eat as many as you might other shelled nuts! They can be expensive so watch for sales and quantity discounts. (Our FLASH sleuth recently found a good size bag at CVS for $5.99.)

SAVINGS TIP OF THE WEEK!

DO'S  AND   DON'TS   AT  THE  DOLLAR  STORES

A special report from BOTTOM LINE BOOKS offers these suggestions for shopping at a Dollar store.

DO buy greeting cards at 2 for $1.00 that can cost $3.50 at other retailers.

DON'T buy plastic bags. To stay within their $1 bracket. they come in small quantities and the price per bag is higher than at other chain stores.

DO buy small plastic storage bins and pails.

DON'T buy children's toys. They can break easily and can even be hazardous because some, including toy jewelry,  may contain lead.

DO buy holiday decorations and other seasonal merchandise around holiday time. Other retailers have clearance sales only after the holiday is over.

DON'T buy pet food and toys from obscure manufacturers. It might lack nutritional value or may even contain unsafe ingredients.

DO buy cleaning solutions, detergents and other common household products except dishwashing liquid.

DON'T buy dishwashing liquid because an 11 oz. bottle may cost $1, but you can find a 32 oz. bottle at supermarkets for as little as $2.

DO buy socks. They are usually just as good as department store socks.

DON'T buy off-brand vitamins. They don't always deliver the vitamin content that they claim.

.

DO buy bread and cereals. This can save you quite a bit!
