THE PRODUCERS February 24th - March 20th Riverside Theatre
Winner of 12 Tony Awards, The Producers is one of Broadway's biggest blockbusters. Based on the hit 1968 film of the same name, this Mel Brooks masterpiece chronicles the hilarious adventures of washed-up Broadway producer Max Bialystock and his mild-mannered accountant Leo Bloom, as they scheme to get rich quick by producing the most notorious flop in the history of showbiz. What they don't know is that after all their hard work, the musical ends up being a smash hit! The Producers is a hilarious tour-de-force that spoofs the big, old-fashioned Broadway musical while paying tribute to it at the same time. CLICK HERE FOR TICKET INFORMATION. |

THE FIVE POINTED STAR
Next Monday is PRESIDENTS' DAY. We used to honor just the birthdays of Abe Lincoln on Feb. 12th and George Washington on the 22nd and they were both Federal holidays! Somebody must have thought we were having too much fun having two long weekends in one month and they decided we would have only one day to honor all Presidents. (Sorry!)
Anyway, here's a fun fact you may not know. It seems that when President Washington called on Betsy Ross to create our first flag, he had planned on the stars having 6 points. Betsy, who had an upholstery shop, told him that making 6 points would be very time consuming, but she could make a 5 pointed star with just one clip of her scissors and that is why the stars have 5 points! This is a fun project for kids.. To learn how she did it, CLICK HERE.

THE BIRKIN BAG
FLASH found the website below which offers designer discounts on clothing for men, women and children, as well as jewelry, handbags, shoes, and even bed linens. The site owners say they buy direct from factories and buy close-outs and overstocked merchandise. 'Warning' though, - while the merchandise is discounted, it is still expensive. A pair of Manolo Blahnik shoes (favored by the Sex and the City gals) are priced at $229, but a Hermes Birkin Ostrich Skin handbag will set you back $1,450. Birkin bags are carried by the likes of Kim Kardashian, Katie Holmes, Victoria Beckham and Kelly Ripa. The Birkin bags usually start at $5,300, but the crocodile bag pictured above sells for $120,000! (Makes the ostrich bag look like a real steal, doesn't it?!) http://www.thedesignerdiscount.com/
NOTE: The Birkin is so reknowned that author Michael Tornello wrote his bestselling book, BRINGING HOME THE BIRKIN, about his quest for one. Available on Amazon, this fun read tells you all about the history and making of the famous bag.

KIDS' CORNER
GREAT IDEA FOR THEIR ART!
Most kids' artwork that they bring home winds up stuck with a magnet to the refrigerator. Here's an idea we like that will make it seem even more special. Hang a clothesline or ribbon across a wall in the child's room and clip the various pictures to it with colorful plastic clothespins. This way they can easily add new 'works of art' and will have a constantly changing gallery!

UPDATE ON "SKINS"!

A couple of weeks ago we called your attention to the new MTV show SKINS which depicts teens using drugs, alcohol and engaging in specific sexual acts. Taco Bell was the first to pull its commercials. Now GM, H&R Block, and Wrigley gum have followed suit and more are expected to do so. (Score one for the good guys!) We encourage our subscribers to become pro-active and express your opinion to advertising sponsors when you think material is inappropriate. Obviously, it can be very effective!

MAC 'n CHEESE THE DISH OF PRESIDENTS! Since Monday is President's Day, why not serve your family this dish which was enjoyed by two of our most popular Presidents. Thomas Jefferson is credited with introducing Americans to Macaroni and Cheese when he brought a pasta machine back from Italy in 1787. Over the years, chefs experimented with variations on the original recipe. The one below is the Reagans' personal recipe and was President Reagan's favorite meal!
RONALD REAGAN'S MACARONI AND CHEESE
From The White House Family Cookbook by H. Haller and V. Aronson
serves 4 as an entree, or 6 to 8 as a side dish
1/2 pound macaroni
1 tablespoon butter
1 egg, beaten
3 cups grated sharp cheddar cheese
1 cup warm milk
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon dry mustard
1/2 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce
a pinch of paprika
1. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Butter a 2-quart casserole dish. 2. Add macaroni to 2 quarts of boiling salted water and cook for 10 minutes. 3. Drain well in a colander. Transfer to a mixing bowl. 4. Stir in butter and beaten egg. Add 2 1/2 cups of the grated cheese. 5. In a small bowl, combine milk with salt, mustard and Worcestershire sauce. 6. Spoon macaroni and cheese into the prepared casserole. Pour milk mixture over and sprinkle top with the remaining cheese. 7. Sprinkle with paprika. Bake on middle shelf of preheated oven for 35 to 40 minutes, or until macaroni is firm to the touch and the top is crusty and browned. 8. Serve at once, either as a light entree accompanied by a hot green vegetable and a crisp salad, or as a side dish with Hamburgers or Meat Loaf.

SAVINGS TIP OF THE WEEK!

SAVE ON AUTO INSURANCE
Take advantage of discounts that you may not know about. Some auto insurance providers will not automatically tell you about these discounts, so it's crucial that you inquire about them. Discounts are available for students with certain grades, for retirees, for military service, for credit union members and for many other groups of drivers as well. These may include members of organizations the company has as 'partners.' These so-called 'partnerships' vary between insurance companies, so always ask what may be available to you. One lady we know recently received a discount of about $130 simply because she is a member of a specific college sorority that she joined over 50 years ago!
