JOSEPH LINDOR
 IS A POSITIVE PERSON
Joseph Lindor was named Youth of the Year during the seventh annual Boys & Girls Club Youth of the Year celebration on January 27, 2011. Lindor is president of the community service-focused Keystone Club, a junior at Vero Beach High School, and a member of ROTC. Youth of the Year is BGC of Indian River County's premier youth recognition program for Club members and is designed to recognize our most outstanding young people. Being named a Boys & Girls Club Youth of the Year is the highest honor a Club member can receive. Club members are judged on the following criteria: service to home and family; moral character; community service; school leadership and service; academic performance; service to the Boys & Girls Club; life goals; two written essays; and public speaking ability. Before Lindor accepted the award, he addressed the crowd of 145 people, stating that, "I've experienced a lot of hard times these past few years. I lost focus of my priorities in life but the Boys & Girls Club has helped me to stay focused and is leading me to a path of excellence. I thank the staff for guiding me in the right direction when I didn't know what to do or where to go." FLASH congratulates you Joseph and is proud of you for the path you have chosen and for setting such a great example for your peers.

A VALENTINE FOR YOU GUYS!
Farrah Fawcett posed for this famous shot in 1976. Now her red swimsuit along with the poster and other Fawcett memorabilia is being donated to the Smithsonian museum in D.C.. The poster went on to become one of the most popular of all time, selling around 12 million copies. This poolside shot by photographer Bruce McBroom was spur-of-the-moment and Farrah wore her own one-piece swimsuit. (Whoever decided bikini's were sexier?!) Fawcett died of cancer in 2009 at the age of 62, but thanks to the Smithsonian, no one will ever forget her sunny smile and iconic red swimsuit.

Are you a Hero? Know someone who'd like to be?
FLASH thinks this is something GREAT for school service clubs to be a part of too! Red Cross month is March, and the Red Cross will be running the Heroes for the American Red Cross fundraising campaign to assure that they have the materials needed to support their response to all local disasters. Their goal is $25,000 which is only 25 heroes! A Hero for the Red Cross is a person who agrees to raise $1000 by any legal means. They can get their friends, family, employees or employers to donate. They can raffle something of value. They can sell American Red Cross squares to customers and display them at their establishment which could be a restaurant, hotel, bank or any other business. They can hold a garage sale or bake sale. Their imaginations are their only limit to how donations may be raised. Are you up for the challenge??? Please call or email Athalia Jones if you are interested: (772) 532-2451 athalia.jones@ntc-redcross.org |

SAVINGS TIP OF THE WEEK

Surprise your spouse or significant other by e-mailing them a love letter while at work. If you're no good with putting things into words, let YOU TUBE help. Just type "love songs" in the search bar and it will bring up a selection of musical videos by different artists. There's Frank Sinatra singing FLY ME TO THE MOON or choose either Frank or Ella Fitzgerald singing MY FUNNY VALENTINE...Or a more modern one like Taylor Swift singing LOVE STORY. There are so many, it will be hard to choose. If a particular song is "your song", type the title in Search and see what comes up. It won't cost a penny, but it will probably mean more to your loved one than a box of candy! www.youtube.com

GREAT BRITAIN'S VALENTINES
Pictured above is the engagement ring Kate Middleton received from Prince William that formerly belonged to his late mother Princess Diana. Kate and William's romance has been a favorite topic of "royal watchers" now for some time and the fascination has only grown stronger with this gift and the tradition behind it. Maybe this Valentine's Day is a good time to start a tradition of your own by commemorating your personal love story with a copy of this gorgeous ring. Copies are available online in all price ranges, but the real thing would be very expensive! The 18 carat sapphire surrounded by 14 diamonds was valued at about $65,000 when Diana frist received it in 1981. Today, it is estimated that the sapphire alone is worth $300,000 and the entire ring with the diamond setting would be about a half million!

ASK YOUR VALENTINE TO DANCE!
|
|
|
|
|
|
As we became a nation of couch potatoes, dancing was pushed aside by television, computers, texting, video games and other sedentary time guzzlers. Now. . . finally, dancing is back! Dancing is an ideal blend of social interaction, physical activity, mental stimulation, and just plain fun! Studies have proven that partner dancing exerts as much energy as swimming or jogging! This low-impact activity builds stamina and endurance, improves muscle tone and offers a perfect blend of isometric and isotonic resistance, all while burning calories. Fast dancing is good cardio exercise. (Think Salsa and Swing.) Slow dancing can also be good exercise and will improve posture, balance and flexibility, especially if it involves stretching moves. (Think Tango.) According to the American Journal of Medicine, dancing is one of the best ways to avoid arthritis and relieve current joint discomfort. Even Line Dancing offers benefits!
(NOTE: If you have a Wii game, you might want to get the "Dance On Broadway" DVD. With or without a partner, you just follow along with the stick figures on the screen and you'll be moving to some of those great Broadway melodies!)

AN AMERICAN LOVE STORY!
.
Last Sunday was the 100th anniversary of Ronald Reagan's birth. When he died in 2004, he had been married to his wife Nancy for 52 years. President Reagan wrote letters to Nancy from the time he met her in 1950 and on throughout their years in the White House. No matter what else was going on in his life or where he was, he wrote to Nancy to express his love or just to stay in touch. In typical fashion, many of the letters show the famous Reagan wit. In 2002, Nancy Reagan published these letters in her book, "I LOVE YOU, RONNIE". Since this is our Valentine issue, it seemed appropriate that we include this link where you can read some of them for yourself. RECIPE OF THE WEEK
CHOCOLATE DIPPED STRAWBERRIES
We think that the heart-shaped strawberry is God's personal Valentine to us. The only thing that makes them more delicious is chocolate. Try this!
|
INGREDIENTS
36 Strawberries
1 (7 oz.) package of Chocolate Chips
1/4 cup half and half cream
Line a baking sheet or cookie pan with waxed paper.
Wash the strawberries and pat dry thoroughly with paper towels; set aside. NOTE: Make sure the strawberries are completely dry. Even a drop of water in the melted chocolate can cause it to turn grainy. If you use refrigerated strawberries, allow them to come to room temperature before dipping in the melted chocolate. There are instructions for melting chocolate chips on the back of most chocolate chip bags. (Watch this process closely so it doesn't burn!) When melted, stir in the cream. Dip the strawberries in chocolate by holding by the stem or leaf. When removing, hold for a second to let the excess chocolate drip, then place on wax paper to harden. Refrigerate if not used right away. NOTE: If you want to use these as a gift, it's pretty to put them in a box in mini cupcake liners as pictured above. |
