As FLASH catches on (That's a good thing)., Our newsletter is getting a bit longer. (That is also a good thing) However...we want to stay committed to keeping FLASH a quick - upbeat - fun read! In order to do this we are going to keep our postings between 20-25 each week depending on the length of our postings. We are also only going to be spotlighting events that will take place during the coming week and/or are time sensitive for ticket sales or volunteer requests. The events that are further out will be mentioned in our monthly calendar. If we find this to be too constraining, we will consider turning to a bi-weekly publication. Thank you for your understanding and for your feedback.

BEN'S BELLS
We've all heard that something good can come from something bad. There is no doubt that many wonderful programs we have today are evidence of such. John Walsh is responsible for "America's Most Wanted", Amber Hagerman; Ambe r Alerts,... Ben's Bells, Ben's Bells you say??? Yes indeed and FLASH is bringing the Ben's Bells Program to Vero! A mother started Ben's Bells after her two-year-old son passed away. Ben's Bells are created from clay and hung throughout the city with a note encouraging kindness. Perhaps Random Acts of Kindness, the same random acts that were showered upon their family that helped them heal. Simple....Yes, Profound...Yes, coincidental... You betcha! Ben's Bells is based in the city of Tuscon, Arizona... the city where the recent shooting took place at Congresswoman Gabrielle Gifford's town meeting. Never before has Tuscon needed the message of Ben's Bells more and an additional 1,400 bells were hung throughout Tuscon after the shooting. The story of Ben's Bells aired on MSNBC Nightly News and it touched our hearts at FLASH and we want to bring the concept of Ben's Bells to Vero. Click Here to see the report.
The mission of Ben's Bells is a perfect fit for our mission to spotlight the 'POSITIVE.' FLASH will start placing bells around town on February 14th. It seems fitting to begin on Valentine's Day! Those who find the bells will be encouraged to FLASH RANDOM ACTS OF KINDNESS and CHEER to others! What fun !:) If you would like to help create our FLASH Bell's, inspired by Ben's Bells, please email us and we will get in touch with you regarding the location and time. Anyone and everyone of any age is welcome!!!

This will allow Habitat to retain vast amounts of reusable materials which will keep it from entering landfills. TO BURN OR NOT TO BURN...
WE'RE TALKING ABOUT CALORIES!
When you're dieting, it's sometimes hard to pass up a special treat. Here's how to decide whether to give into temptation with no regrets. This chart from the Real Age website shows how much extra workout time it will take to burn the calories in certain treats. For example, it takes a 60 minute brisk walk to burn off the calories in a piece of chocolate cake! (Is it really worth it?!) The chart shows how much time it takes for a 135-pound person to burn off the calories in certain foods with a stair-step machine (the fastest),a stationery bike (average), and a brisk walk (longer). You may want to print this one and stick it on the refrigerator! Click here. |

WARNING TO PARENTS!

MTV's new hit show "SKINS" is getting lots of attention for its vivid depiction of teen sex ('hetero' and lesbian) and drug and alcohol use, complete with foul language and nudity. The show premiered Monday night before 3 million viewers, but FLASH along with other critics thinks it has gone too far. Cast members are as young as 15 years old. The Parents Television Council has contacted Congress requesting an investigation of the show to see if it doesn't violate child pornography laws. You can read the PTC report here. http://www.parentstv.org/PTC/news/release/2011/0120.asp
MTV defends the show by stating that the Monday 10 P.M. time slot deters younger viewers and stating, "We also have taken numerous steps to alert viewers to the strong subject matter so that they can choose for themselves whether it is appropriate." FLASH thinks this warning at the beginning of the show may attract the curiosity of younger kids. Oddly enough, viewing the online episode has an age block for younger teens. (Of course all the teen would have to do is enter an older birth year.) Only parents can block the TV show on Monday nights. Since the PTC report, to their credit Taco Bell was the first of several sponsors that have now pulled out as a sponsor. If you have children that you think might have this show on their radar, then you too might want to take a peek at the preview clip below to be informed. But, be warned that it's pretty trashy too. http://www.mtv.com/videos/misc/603722/skins-extended-trailer.jhtml#id=1653801 |

SAVINGS TIP OF THE WEEK!
|

LAST MINUTE CRUISE
Here's a website that you might want to save and check back with frequently. It lists cruise discounts for Florida residents who are able to travel at the last minute. Obviously, the cruise companies would rather have some income on a room rather than have it sail empty, so they give these discounts to nearby residents who might be able to make last minute plans. For example, you can book an interior room with Royal Caribbean for a 4 night cruise to the Bahamas sailing on Feb. 28th for $219.00. That's just a little more than $50 a night and it includes all those wonderful meals and entertainment. If you can make it...Bon Voyage!

LIVING INDEPENDENTLY
Sometimes living alone poses a danger to the health and safety of an elderly loved one, but that person may be reluctant to admit needing assistance. If you're in this position and you need to speak with an older person about this, here are some suggestions
- Have a plan for the conversation, and try to ease into the topic rather than stating the problem bluntly.
- If the person becomes upset and is clear about not wanting to discuss the topic, let it go and bring it up at a better time -- perhaps at a doctor's appointment, because the doctor may be able to help.
- Emphasize that you are concerned for the person's health and safety, and explain how he or she is at risk by living alone.
- Ask the person specifically what he or she wants, doesn't want, and about his or her fears.
- Treat the person as an adult and with respect -- don't talk down to the person like a child.
Champion can provide the help your loved ones may need to remain in their own home. We invite you to visit our website or to call us (772) 257-0442.

SUPER BOWL SLOPPY JOES
February 6th is just around the corner, so Super Bowl Sunday is almost here! The website below is the NFL's official website for the game. (It even has a 'countdown clock' that constantly changes the days, hours, minutes and seconds until the game, as well as current news about the play-offs.) If you're planning a party, this easy recipe will serve 25 people or more and is guaranteed to be a hit!
INGREDIENTS 5 lbs. ground beef 2 or 3 chopped onions 1 bottle of barbecue sauce (not smoke flavor) 1 can cream of tomato soup 1 cup of 1 minute oatmeal DIRECTIONS Brown beef and onions in a large skillet or pot. Drain off fat. Stir in BBQ sauce and soup. Thicken a little with the oatmeal. (Use more if desired.) Simmer 10 minutes or all day, - it doesn't matter. This recipe makes 25 or more sandwiches when served on hamburger buns, and 50 or more on small rolls. For even more, make it in batches and keep it warm in a covered roasting pan in the oven on low heat. Leftovers freeze well. Click here for NFL's Super Bowl website. http://www.nfl.com/superbowl/45 |
