BARBARA  SCHLITT  FORD

barb
IS A POSITIVE PERSON

This week's Positive Person comes as no surprise.  Barbara Schlitt Ford was born and raised right here in Vero and began giving back to this community when she was just a youngster. Once she returned home after receiving her law degree from FSU, she began her adult volunteering with the Exchange Club of Indian River. Barb has traveled extensively within this country's borders and beyond and as a result has a vast appreciation for the place we all call home. She has two children which she credits as her greatest accomplishment.  Anyone that knows Barb knows that children hold a special spot in her heart. She became a mentor with Youth Guidance through her involvement with the Exchange Club whose mission it is to help prevent child abuse. This experience had a profound effect on her and changed her world. She decided to leave her 'legal world' and went back to school to obtain her Masters in Elementary Education.  She taught on the west coast of Florida for four years before coming home to teach at Beachland Elementary for five years. She also served as in-house counsel at her family's business, Coldwell Banker Ed Schlitt Realtors before landing her current position as the Executive Director of Youth Guidance. Barb has found her secret to happiness and it is in doing what she can to help make this world a better place for others. She is inspired by her father and 'hero', Ed Schlitt who always had something nice to say about others. Two other individuals that inspire Barb are her oldest sister, Linda Schlitt Gonzalez, who she thinks is 'so much like her father' and Alma Lee Loy, another iconic figure in this community.  Barb has served as a former County Commissioner, was recognized as Exchangite of the Year, received the Above and Beyond Award from Sandra Bowden, and is a graduate of Leadership Indian River County. She enjoys reading, boating, days on the beach and spending time with her two girls. She stated that her life is  "filled with purpose, an unbelievably wonderful family, true and unique friends, and I believe I live in paradise. I love my life and feel so privileged to be living it." Barb encourages everyone to pursue their passion and make this world a better place.  She once read that you become an average of the 5 people you spend the most time with. So, choose wisely and surround yourself with positive people! If you don't like something, take some positive action to improve it and don't succumb to complaining! What great advice!  Thanks Barb for truly making our community a better place! :)

GET ORGANIZED!

If your New Year's resolution is to get organized, here's help from Martha Stewart. The website below offers many organizational tips for your kitchen, desk, closets and other areas of your home. Here's a tip for recipes that FLASH especially likes.

RECIPE FILE

Here's a new job for photo protectors: Use them to keep recipe cards organized and free of spills and spatters in the kitchen. Protectors are available at office-supply stores and come in a variety of sizes; choose ones to accommodate your recipe cards taken from magazines as well as handwritten ones received from friends. Store the pages in a three-ring binder.  You can also include full-size pages in your album to accommodate whole recipe pages from magazine and newspapers. You can index your recipes with subject dividers for 3-ring notebooks. You can also create a separate notebook for other clippings of articles and ideas. Here is the site with other suggestions.  Click Here.

LIVING INDEPENDENTLY

Sometimes living alone poses a danger to the health and safety of an elderly loved one, but that person may be reluctant to admit needing assistance. If you're in this position and you need to speak with an older person about this, here are some suggestions

  • Have a plan for the conversation, and try to ease into the topic rather than stating the problem bluntly.
  • If the person becomes upset and is clear about not wanting to discuss the topic, let it go and bring it up at a better time -- perhaps at a doctor's appointment, because the doctor may be able to help.
  •  Emphasize that you are concerned for the person's health and safety, and explain how he or she is at risk by living alone.
  • Ask the person specifically what he or she wants, doesn't want, and about his or her fears.
  •  Treat the person as an adult and with respect -- don't talk down to the person like a child.

Champion can provide the help your loved ones may need to remain in their own home. We invite you to visit our website or to call us (772) 257-0442.

On Saturday December 12, 2010 12 teens and 3 Kiwanians arrived at an older home in Gifford, Florida at 8:30 am.  For the next 4 hours the team installed a new storm door, repaired the front porch, cleaned the yard and painted the whole house.  At 12:30 they finished and received the thanks of the home owners who said that there home looked like new again.  This group of teens and adults was one of six teams that day who were part of "Youth in Action".

For the past fifteen years the Vero-Treasure Coast Kiwanis Club has sponsored "Youth in Action" (YIA), a teen service group that has repaired and painted nearly 500 homes in Indian River County!

COPIES OF GLAMOROUS GOWNS

img1-angelina-jolie

Watching the Golden Globe Awards on TV last Sunday was like watching a glamorous fashion show! Did you know that a fashion design cannot be copywrighted? It's true! That's unfortunate for the designer, but lucky for the rest of us. Below is a website we found where you can order copies of some of the most gorgeous gowns we have ever seen at a fraction of the cost of the original. For instance, the gown worn above by Anjelina Jolie at the Oscars can be purchased on sale for $133.49. The site also has a gorgeous collection of wedding gowns. The gowns can be ordered by size or custom made to your measurements.  Even if you don't order, it's a fun website for ladies to peruse!

denise austinHave you been feeling a little sluggish lately? Your diet may be tohealth tips blame. Don't panic! Denise Austin is here to help with a cheat sheet on what you should be eating. The experts say :

  • 45 to 65 percent of your daily calories should come from carbohydrates, particularly complex carbs (those which contain healthy, satisfying fiber) The best sources are found in fruits, veggies, high-fiber cereals and beans.
  • 10 to 35% should come from protein. Good sources include: beans, soy, lean meats, skinless poultry, fish, egg whites, low-fat milk and yogurt, low-fat cheese.
  • Women should eat from 21-25 grams of fiber a day; men, 30-38 grams a day. The best sources are fruits, veggies, whole grains (oatmeal, brown rice, and barley) Fiber is the part of plant foods that your body can't digest and absorb. There are two types. Insoluble fiber, in whole grains and veggies, is the type that helps keep you regular. Soluble fiber, found in oatmeal, dried beans, and some fruits like apples and oranges, can help keep your blood sugar and cholesterol levels in check.

ISN'T IT GREAT TO LIVE IN FLORIDA?!

                                                                                                                           Snow, 8 February 2007

Last week, every state with the exception of Florida  had snow on the ground according to the National Weather Service. This included Hawaii where about seven inches of snow fell atop Mauna Kea. As of Jan. 11th, almost 70 percent of the contiguous United States was covered by snow! This is more than double the snow cover from last month. Last week's snow storm in the Southern states has allowed for this unusual occurrence. To keep up with the weather on your computer,  add our Government's official website to your favorites.

 RECIPE OF THE WEEK

BAKED SUGAR DONUTS

A glazed Krispy Kreme donut has 200 calories and 12g fat. This recipe from the Pillsbury website cuts the calories to 110 and the fat to 4g in one serving (1 donut & 1 center). You can also fry the dough in oil, but it will increase the calories and fat.

1 can (7.5 oz) Pillsbury® refrigerated buttermilk biscuits
3 tablespoons butter or margarine, melted
1/3 cup sugar

DIRECTIONS:
Heat oven to 375°F
Separate dough into 10 biscuits; flatten each to a 2 1/2-inch round.
With 1-inch round cookie cutter, cut hole in center of each round.
Dip all sides of biscuits and centers into butter, then into sugar.
Place on ungreased cookie sheet.
Bake 12 to 14 minutes or until golden brown
