A CHRISTMAS CRAFT TRADITION FROM TEAM FLASH!
SANTA'S MAGIC ADVENT WALNUTS

This is time consuming BUT...SO WORTH IT!! Children love these 'magic' walnuts and it helps them to countdown the days 'til Christmas! Carefully open each nut, by tapping on the seam with a small hammer until you can fit a dull knife into the opening. Carefully pry open and remove the nut. Place a small toy or coin inside, and glue the nut back together with Elmer's glue. You can, paint it, add a loop of ribbon before closing, and top it with a bow (see picture). We prefer the 'natural' look as it doesn't look tampered by humans and the kids will stay puzzled at how Santa got those surprises inside the nut! The final step is to number them down to #1 with a Sharpie pen and place the nuts in a bag or container and have "Santa" mail them to the young child. Put a note from Santa inside instructing the child to open one nut each day until Christmas. Usually seven nuts for the final week before Christmas is good, but if you're ambitious, do more!
.
For your magic surprises, buy tiny party favors from a party supply store. - ie, a ring, a tiny eraser, a gold star, stickers or whatever will fit in the nut. This is a good project to do with friends because the small party favors usually come in packages and you can share them. Pennies, nickels and dimes are also good, and you can even fold a dollar bill to fit the last nut to be opened!
.
Crafter's tip...If the nut doesn't open into two even halves, it's okay. Once the two parts are glued together, it will be fine. We just bet you that this will become a family tradition! |

RECIPE OF THE WEEK
'DO-IT-YOURSELF' STUFFED POTATOES
Who doesn't love those 'twice-baked stuffed potatoes', ...but who has time (especially during the busy holidays!) to fix them? Here's the solution! Mix up a batch of this and let everyone mash and stuff their own at the table. The measurements are pretty much according to taste and it will keep in the refrigerator for several days.
FOR 4 BAKED POTATOES, MIX TOGETHER:
I small tub of low-fat Sour Cream
(You may use Plain Yogurt or Cottage Cheese if you prefer.)
2 heaping Tbs. (or more) soft Butter or Margarine
1/4 cup (or more) of packaged Shredded Cheddar Cheese
Garlic Salt and Pepper to taste
You can also have Chopped Green Onions, Bacon Bits and extra Cheese available and let everyone help themselves.

7 THINGS TO DO WITH PEPPERMINT CANES!
Of course you know that candy canes make great ornaments to hook on the tree, but look what else you can do with them!
1. Use as Stirrers for Hot Chocolate, Coffee or sweet Cocktails.
2. Decorate a package by tying one into the bow.
3. Crush the candy in a plastic bag and use the chips as 'Sprinkles' for toppings.
4. Add crushed chips to a Chocolate Chip Cookie recipe
5. Make Peppermint Ice Cream Sundaes and serve with Chocolate Sauce. (Stir chips and a little mint flavoring into softened vanilla ice cream.)
6. For kids, break off the top and insert lower half in a hole cut into the top of an Orange. (The acid from the juice creates a 'straw' as they squeeze the orange.)
7. And (because peppermint contains menthol).....quiet a nagging Cough, sooth a Sore Throat, be an effective Decongestant, and maybe even relieve Headache Pain. |

HOLIDAY HEALTH TIP
NEED AN ENERGY BOOST? "B" GOOD TO YOURSELF!
Everyone feels tired from time to time, but this busy time of year it's easy for exhaustion to set in. If you feel that you need an energy boost, you may want to take a daily B Complex Vitamin. Look what the "Bs" can do for you!
B1, also known as Thiamin, is found naturally in whole grains, lean meats and fish. It helps the body convert carbohydrates into energy.
B2 or Riboflavin is crucial for metabolism. It helps convert fats and carbohydrates into energy, encourages blood flow to the brain, and moves oxygen throughout the body to help cellular functioning.
Folic acid (Vitamin B9) is vital for producing red blood cells, which carry energizing oxygen throughout the body.
B12 works together with folic acid to manufacture red blood cells. It's necessary for digestion, metabolizing fats and carbohydrates, and creating protein. Even if you're not B12 deficient, your energy levels may be improved by increasing your intake of this vitamin.

SAVE ON CHRISTMAS CARDS
First class postage for mailing the average card costs $.44. Add that to the cost of the card itself, and it gets a little pricey! Many people save by sending online cards, but here's another idea. Send postcards instead. A 6" x 4 1/4" postcard stamp only costs $.28!
If you don't want to purchase the postcards, cut your own to the correct size from lightweight poster board. It's a perfect size to glue a family photo to one side or let your kids color a Christmas design on the outside. Write your message on the left of the opposite side. and put the address and stamp to the right.
