NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTIONS Should you or shouldn't you?
The top ten New Year's Resolutions are to (not necessarily in this order) Stop Smoking, Get Fit, Lose Weight, Quit Drinking, Get Organized, Get Out Of Debt, Learn Something, Enjoy Life More, Spend More Time With Family, and to Help People. According to current research, 40 to 45% of American adults make one or more resolutions each year. The following shows how many are kept as time goes on:
- past the first week: 75% (Ooops!)
- past 2 weeks: 71% (Not too bad,)
- after one month: 64% (Hmmm?)
- after 6 months: 46% (That's pretty good, isn't it?)
While a lot of people who make New Year's resolutions do break them, research shows that making resolutions is useful. People who explicitly make resolutions are 10 times more likely to attain their goals than people who
don't make resolutions, so - FLASH says ... Go For It! :) |

BEAUTY TIP FOR LADIES....and MEN?!
Yes, guys,..you too! According to Dr. Karen Burke, author of the book 'AGE ERASERS FOR WOMEN,' if your favorite fragrance or lotion contains musk or bergamot oil, which are common perfume and cologne ingredients, it may give you more than a lovely scent. When perfumes or lotions containing these ingredients are applied to sun-exposed areas, they can produce age spots. Since men's colognes usually contain these ingredients also, this tip applies to them too. To help avoid getting these age spots, the solution is to apply the scents under your clothes.

NEED SERVICE HOURS?
WANTED STUDENT ANIMAL LOVERS
The Humane Society of Vero Beach and Indian River County has a student volunteer blog called the Animal Outreach Team. Every month the blog will feature an issue for students to read about, and an activity where they can help animals and then receive volunteer credit. The blog also features stories about how local students are helping animals. The blog was created so that students in the area who might not be old enough to volunteer at the shelter or who might not have time to come in during regular hours could still contribute. A TERRIFIC SENIORS' TIP FOR THE NEW YEAR
Giving an elderly family member a small cassette recorder can become a much cherished keepsake. Take the time to show your family member how to use the recorder and ask him to start recording his memories, beginning from when he was a child. Most seniors do not have the patience or skills to write family histories, but this can be done at their own pace and convenience with a recorder. Even seniors suffering from dementia or Alzheimer's frequently remember past events. This not only helps to offset loneliness and boredom, it will become a cherished family treasure recorded in the voice of your family member. It will become a keepsake you can pass on and one to be enjoyed by the younger members of your family in years to come.at their ownfor the younger family members..

HEALTH TIP
FROM WEIGHT WATCHERS

|
Since more and more people will be shopping online for the after Christmas specials, Weight Watchers has come up with this tip for sedentary shoppers. Online shopping is a great time saver, but it means you lose the mall walking that usually goes with shopping. Make it up by figuring out exactly how much time you saved (say, 15 minutes per purchase), then increase your cardio exercise by that much for the week.
We think this is such a good idea that maybe we should all continue striving for a balance between computer vs. exercise time after the holidays are over. Consider how many minutes you spend on your home computer each day. Now how does that equate with the recommended 30 minutes of cardio exercise you're supposed to get three times a week? Maybe you can work out a formula to fit your own lifestyle. For instance, promise yourself ten minutes (or more) of exercise each day for every hour spent on your computer! |

FLASH FASHION TIP OF THE WEEK
An accent in fashion creates our own individual style. The way you wear a hairband...The way you tie a bow...The choice of shoes...Or scarf. With your own individual style no one can do it better than you! When you choose a color, select it with great care-and remember that except in the hands of the top designers two colors in one outfit is enough. |
SAVINGS TIP FOR THE NEW YEAR!
Did you know that there were no Credit Cards before 1950? I can hear you saying, "You're kidding! What did they do?" They only bought things they could afford and they paid cash! (If you don't believe it, ask anyone from that generation.) So, this year, why not turn the clock back and start paying cash? As far as your credit card debt goes, if you can't pay it off in a lump sum, at least start paying more each month than the minimum payment. It will help to get you out of debt faster. If your annual percentage interest rate is around 12-13%, when it is compounded (that means paying interest on the interest owed), you could be paying over 34%! So, that item you just got on sale for 30% off turns out to not be a 'deal' after all.

RECIPE OF THE WEEK

GOOD LUCK HOPPIN' JOHN
Most folks who live in the South know that you will have 'good luck' all year if you eat Hoppin' John on New Year's Day. Consequently since it's a Southern tradition, it was a surprise to learn that this recipe is from Emeril Lagasse. His mother was Portuguese; his father was French-Canadian, and he was born and raised in Fall River, Massachusetts! It just goes to prove that everyone likes Southern cooking! (Note: suggestions from our Flash family are in italics.)
INGREDIENTS
1 tablespoon olive oil
1 large ham hock (The bone with some meat left from your Christmas ham.)
1 cup onion, chopped
1/2 cup green pepper, chopped
1 tablespoon chopped garlic
1 pound black-eyed peas, soaked overnight and rinsed
(2 or 3 drained cans of black-eyed peas work too.)
1 teaspoon dry thyme leaves
Salt, black pepper, and cayenne
3 tablespoons finely chopped green onion
3 cups steamed white rice
DIRECTIONS
Heat oil in a large soup pot, add the ham hock (If you don't have a ham hock, use a few chunks of salt pork from the butcher.) and sear on all sides for 4 minutes. Add the onion, celery, green pepper, and garlic, cook for 4 minutes. Add the black-eyed peas, stock, bay leaves, thyme, and seasonings. Bring to a boil, reduce the heat and simmer for 40 minutes, (less if you use canned peas) or until the peas are creamy and tender, stir occasionally. If the liquid evaporates, add more water or stock. Adjust seasonings, and garnish with green onions. Serve over rice. (You can also toss the peas and rice together if you wish to serve in one dish. To make the meal even more 'Southern', serve it with a side of Cornbread.)) |
