The Legend of St. Nicholas
by: History.com
"The legend of Santa Claus can be traced back hundreds of years to a monk named St. Nicholas. It is believed that Nicholas was born sometime around 280 A.D. in Patara, near Myra in modern-day Turkey. Much admired for his piety and kindness, St. Nicholas became the subject of many legends. It is said that he gave away all of his inherited wealth and traveled the countryside helping the poor and sick. One of the best known of the St. Nicholas stories is that he saved three poor sisters from being sold into slavery or prostitution by their father by providing them with a dowry so that they could be married. Over the course of many years, Nicholas's popularity spread and he became known as the protector of children and sailors. His feast day is celebrated on the anniversary of his death, December 6. This was traditionally considered a lucky day to make large purchases or to get married. By the Renaissance, St. Nicholas was the most popular saint in Europe. Even after the Protestant Reformation, when the veneration of saints began to be discouraged, St. Nicholas maintained a positive reputation, especially in Holland."St. Nicholas made his first inroads into American popular culture towards the end of the 18th century. In December 1773, and again in 1774, a New York newspaper reported that groups of Dutch families had gathered to honor the anniversary of his death. The name Santa Claus evolved from Nick's Dutch nickname, Sinter Klaas, a shortened form of Sint Nikolaas (Dutch for Saint Nicholas). In 1804, John Pintard, a member of the New York Historical Society, distributed woodcuts of St. Nicholas at the society's annual meeting. The background of the engraving contains now-familiar Santa images including stockings filled with toys and fruit hung over a fireplace." |

The Spirit of Giving
.

George Jenkins founded Publix with the spirit of giving in mind. He was once asked, "If you hadn't given away so much, how much do you think you would be worth today?" His response, without hesitation: "Probably nothing." In tribute to his shining example, Publix continues to be a corporate giving leader. After sponsoring half a home in Oslo Park last year, Publix is back again to partner with Indian River Habitat for Humanity. This time the foundation's $25,000 gift will sponsor half of a 3-bedroom, 2-bath home on a single lot in Indian River County.

Pictures of Santa
From: Kim Brady & Family

Christmas Eve is always spent celebrating my mother's birthday. Christmas Day is a whirlwind of family, food and fun. We begin at 6am when the kids wake up to unwrap their gifts from Santa and find pictures of Santa putting presents under the tree the night before when they were fast asleep. Every year my husband dresses up so we can get these wonderful snapshots for the kids. After the gifts are opened we run off to Pop-pop's for Polachinki's (sp) for breakfast. He has been making these every Christmas morning for years and years. Yet another round of gift opening and then off to Nana's house for lunch and more family fun (and of course more gifts). At about 4 or 5 pm, when all have become exhausted, we make our way home to clean up and get ready for our favorite part. The day after Christmas. We stay in our PJ's all day long and play with our toys and spend quality time together. Doesn't it sound wonderful? Oh and we always remember to wish Jesus Happy Birthday and remember the reason for the season.

No Peeking
From: Tracy Carroll & Family
When my daughters were small, we would "paper off" their hallway Christmas Eve with wrapping paper so they could not "sneak out" and see what Santa had left. When we got up at daybreak, they would always be waiting behind the paper, sharing Christmas joy and anticipation. On our signal, they would break through the paper and run into the living room - first to see that the baby Jesus had magically appeared in his manger in the Nativity scene, then on to the tree!

Our Magic Elf
From: Karan Morein and Family
Our Elf night tradition began 18 years ago. It all started with a phone call from an elf to have the children place their shoes outside the front door with their Christmas list from Santa. The elves would get the list and leave things in the shoes (Boots). They left candy, Christmas pajamas, socks with toes and a few Christmas items. Four years ago our youngest had an elf come stay with her after elf night. The elf came with a letter from Santa telling Mackenzie her name, 'Blitz'. Blitz warned Mackenzie that she needed to behave because she was to report back to Santa whether she had been naughty or nice. Blitz has done the craziest things:
1) She got in the sugar bowl at night and spilled sugar all over the counter and she was
upside down in the sugar jar.
2) She would always hide throughout the house and we had to go find her.
3) One night she was found by Mackenzie's sink with a new toothbrush and toothpaste.
4) She has hidden in our Christmas tree and knocked down some ornaments. She even tried
to open some Christmas packages.
5) She ate Mackenzie's lunch that she had made the night before.
6) She has hidden in Mackenzie's backpack and gone to school with her.
7) One morning we could not find her and we were going to be late for school. When we
got in the car there sat Blitz waiting to go to school with Mackenzie
8) This afternoon we lost our elf and could not find her. We looked and looked and finally
found her in our freezer because she likes the cold...she is from the North Pole you know.
9) At bedtime the elf disappeared again and we found her in Mackenzie's room inside new
Christmas pajamas that where there for her. Blitz had an accident one night and got her nose bitten off by our sweet dog. We bandaged her up and the next year Blitz came back with the band-aide on her nose; full of energy once again! This year we got a new Elf named Ribbon because Blitz was afraid to come back because we now have 2 dogs. Ribbon came with an Elf journal with a note to Mackenzie in the Elf Journal asking her to write about her elf's experiences every day in her new journal. Ribbon is as mischievous as Blitz! When we got up this morning Ribbon had toilet papered the inside of our house and made a bed for herself out of toilet paper. Ribbon came with her own snowflakes and asked Mackenzie to sprinkle snow flakes on her every night so she would not be homesick and so her magical powers would stay with her. She will leave Christmas Eve when Santa comes so that she can help him deliver toys to all the boys and girls. We are having so much fun waking up in the morning to see what Ribbon was up to during the night.
FLASH thinks that Ribbon just might make some magical reappearances throughout the year....perhaps on Mackenzie's birthday!

The Ornament Of The Year
From: Team FLASH
We have a tradition within our family that becomes more cherished as the years go by. Each year we take the event that has impacted our extended family the most and we commemorate it in a homemade ornament. This has included such ornaments as a bride holding a baby in each arm that commemorates a sisters' wedding and two other sisters' first child. We picked up scraps in the yard after Hurricane Andrew and filled a plastic ornament with the collection of debris. Others include the passing of our Aunt Glady, the then Matriarch of the family. She is now remembered each year as we place her angel on our tree. Each ornament includes a poem with more details and memories of the year that is quickly coming to an end. Each ornament is duplicated 6 times and given to each of the 5 sisters and our mother. These have become the most cherished ornaments and we look forward each year to their unwrapping... something which always conjures up some wonderful and sentimental moments that are special to our family! We hope that many Flashers will adopt our tradition and will create a treasure chest of memories that will begin to decorate your tree each year! :)

A FEAST OF STONE CRABS! From Carol Recio & Family
If we are not with our extended family in Miami enjoying the traditional Cuban dinner of roast pork, black beans and rice, we order a large platter of fresh Florida Stone Crabs from Pelican Pete's which we eat with key lime mustard sauce, Caesar Salad, and either guava cheesecake or key lime pie. Summerlin's of Ft. Pierce smoked fish dip, Smak, is always on the table beforehand, that is if any is left by then. If the conditions are right we also like to enjoy a Florida Christmas that includes some surf time at the beach! Now that our family is all grown up, we have made it a tradition to go the movies on Christ mas night after our meal. |

Some folks say that it is not politically correct to say "Merry Christmas" to You because you may take offense. PC is for politicians who must get elected. Not me. When I wish You "Merry Christmas", I mean it. I don't just mean Happy Holidays. I mean Merry Christmas. I am a Christian, but I am not trying to convert you or force my religious beliefs on you. Christmas is important to me, so wishing you "Merry Christmas" shows how I feel about you. So, Merry Christmas! ... I hope happiness finds YOU!
. And, although I am not Buddhist, when I say "Merry Christmas" please hear "A peaceful and joyful Vesak" - Merry Christmas! ... I wish that You have a season full of joy!
. And, although I am not Jewish, when I say "Merry Christmas" please hear "Happy Hannukah" - Merry Christmas! ... I hope You have Days of plenty !.
And although I am not Muslim, when I say "Merry Christmas" please hear "Have a blessed Ramadan" - Merry Christmas! ... I wish that your friends and family are safe and happy! .
Although I am not of African descent, when I say "Merry Christmas" please hear "Joyous Kwanzaa" - Merry Christmas! ... I hope You find some joy every day! .
Although I am not an atheist, when I say "Merry Christmas" please hear, "I wish You happiness!"
I don't know Your religious beliefs, or even if You have any, but I do sincerely and with all my heart wish You a very Merry Christmas!

WATCH OUT FOR SCAMMERS DURING THE HOLIDAYS! AARP issued a warning to seniors last month not to be the victim of scam artists. The holiday season can be a time of giving, - but also of taking! Many legitimate charities have end-of-the-year fund raising drives so there is usually an increase in requests from organizations, but be aware that this is also a busy time for scam artists. Scammers often use sound-alike names of well-known and respected charities. They may also invent ones especially appealing to older donors, like sick or needy children, victims of recent natural disasters, and veterans. If there is a senior in your family, be sure to warn them about this. If you don't have time to help them with sorting these requests or if they need assistance with other matters, Champion is here to help. Our qualified caregivers are available by the day, the night, the week or longer. Just contact us with your needs. We invite you to visit our website or to call us (772) 257-0442.. |

The Annual International Consumer Electronics Show runs the first week of January. That's when companies roll out all their new models of computers, cameras, cell phones, printers, etc. There are always those who have to be first with the latest tech gadget, but January is a great time for the rest of us to buy the older models which will be discounted heavily to make room for the new. RECIPE OF THE WEEK
CHRISTMAS BREAKFAST
If you read about the tradition that Kim Brady shared above, she mentions the Polichinkis (sp?) that her Pop-Pop makes for Christmas breakfast. We had never heard of them, so our research staff went to work. Well. Kim, no wonder you weren't sure of the spelling! We found several different spellings on the internet, but they did all agree that basically it is a very thin crepe, filled with cream cheese or cottage cheese and rolled jelly roll fashion. It is then topped with jelly or preserves, or the fruit can be rolled inside with the cheese filling. Apparently, they are Czechoslovakian in origin. Anyway, they sounded so delicious, we decided to make them our RECIPE OF THE WEEK and we found this version online.
PALACHINKA CREPES3eggs 1 qt. milk 3/4 teaspoon salt 1/2 cup sugar 3 3/4 cup flour 6 Tbsp. melted butter Thoroughly mix all dry ingredients with milk and eggs. Spread 1/4 cup batter in hot greased pan. Tip pan to get a very thin pancake. Brown lightly. Remove from pan and spread cheese filling while still hot and roll.
CHEESE FILLING 2 LBS. cottage cheese (or cream cheese) 1/2 cup sugar dash salt 2 Tbsp. butter 1 tsp. vanilla Top with your choice of preserves, - maybe strawberry, orange marmalade or apple butter. Yum!
NOTE: This recipe did not give number of servings but we're guessing about 16 crepes. |

HEALTH TIP
SING 'SILENT NIGHT'! That's right! Research has shown that singing a calming song can lower your blood pressure as much as six or seven points. It causes you to take deep breaths, which in turn can lower blood pressure. So, - go caroling, sing in the shower or sing along with your car radio. There is also evidence that singing helps to expand your lungs and therefore increases your lung capacity. So... just keep on singing!
