BOB LIVINGSTON

IS A POSITIVE PERSON!
.
Meet out first Positive Person for the month of December, Bob Livingston, a volunteer with the American Red Cross. Born in Hewlitt, New York and raised in Merritt, he then graduated from Hostra University. Before moving to Vero Beach with his family in 1977 he worked in personnel and was a volunteer for the fire department. Once in Vero Beach he joined Ed Schlitt Realty as a Broker-Salesman and volunteered with the ambulance squad. In 1999 he joined the American Red Cross as a volunteer and has been active every day since!
Bob has been involved in many things with the American Red Cross from helping after hurricanes and tropical storms to Haiti Repatriation at the Fort Pierce Airport. He is involved in making sure that the vehicle fleet for the Red Cross is always ready and in great shape! He himself is always ready on a moments notice to help with anything at all. He is truly a valuable part of the Red Cross organization. His kindness and compassion are far reaching in the community and the American Red Cross knows just how perfect a fit the title of 'Positive Person' is for Bob Livingston.

FLASH'S EDITOR'S CHILDREN LOVED THIS!
'College Exam Care Packages'
Packed with Well Wishes from Many!
.
Do you have a child or grandchild in college? If not you can still join the fun and create and donate tins for soldiers or children/families less fortunate. Plan this fun cookie exchange with Moms from the recent graduating high school class...or friends. Ask everyone to bring 1-large cookie tin, a small note of well wishes printed and copied enough times for each guest's child, and enough cookies for each child. You will enjoy the company of friends you may not have seen in a while, while you laugh at college stories that are bound to be told! The hostess can have flat rate boxes for everyone on hand and all guests can package prepared tins before they leave. (No tape needed with these boxes!) Stop by the post office on your way home and you are done! Simple fun and one thing checked off the list of things to do! Your child will love the treat from home and the notes are extra special. When I did this...I got notes from some of the kids' favorite teachers that I copied and also included...that was a big hit!! Have FUN!

AS THE PACE PICKS UP DURING THE HOLIDAYS....
DON'T FORGET TO DO A GOOD DEED! HERE ARE 21 IDEAS!
1) Let Flash cast your vote for Habitat for Humanity!!
Together we will move Indian River Habitat into first
place so that they can win $25,000! CLICK HERE
to allow us to vote for you every day up until Jan. 31st.
2) Invite an elderly neighbor to dinner, or offer to bring
him or her a home-cooked meal.
3) Rescue a dog, cat or other animal from one of our local
him or her a home-cooked meal. shelters.
4) Bring flowers to a friend who's been feeling down.
5) Join a group whose mission you believe in and donate your most valuable resource - time!
6) Write a letter to your representative in Congress about an issue that is important to
you. 7) Donate 'once in a lifetime' clothing, such as bridesmaid dresses, prom dresses or
even bridal gowns. Many people can't afford new formalwear...and it is nice to share
8) Remember all of our wonderful local charities during your gift-giving! Even the
smallest contributions add up when many join together.
9) Send a Christmas Card or Hanukah Card to a member of the armed forces who is
currently stationed overseas! Click this link to find out how.
10) Mentor a child! Help a child with reading, tutor kids in math or other schoolwork or
just spend time with a needy child. It can make all the difference in the world!
11) Offer the gift of baby sitting! Give busy parents you know a break by offering to
watch their kids for an afternoon or evening.
12) Participate in a local walk or run for charity! You'll be helping a good cause while
helping yourself stay fit!
13) Leave a larger than expected tip!
14) Do the simple things... Hold the door for someone, let a driver into your lane, share
a smile, let someone with fewer items go before you at the grocery store, drop some
change into the salvation army can AND thank the 'ringer' for donating his time,
buy lemonade from the child on the side of the road... you got the idea!
15) Reconnect with an old friend and tell them something that they did for you that you
will always remember! This is so much easier with facebook.
16) Do something anonymously!
17) Call a local charity to see if they could use your volunteer services in the office for
a couple of hours.
18) Get in touch with a teacher from your past (or one of your children's teachers) to let
them know how much he or she meant to you or your child!
19) Stop by the local fire dept. or police dept. with a tin of cookies and thank them for
their service.
20) Volunteer at a soup kitchen or church shelter.
21) Practice random acts of kindness every day! |

SAFE CYBER SHOPPING!
.
We've told you about this before in FLASH, but since many of you will be shopping online, it is worth repeating. When you enter any credit card info, make sure that https appears on the address bar at check-out. That little 's' at the end means the site is secure and it is safe to proceed. If it's not there, don't continue. NOTE: Recently a friend received an "important notice" from her credit card company. The website looked authentic, but it requested her social security number, presumably to identify herself. A phone call to the card's customer service verified that they never ask for more than the last four digits. Apparently a 'hacker' had simply done a 'copy/paste' on the real website. Be careful out there in Cyberspace!

HOLIDAY HEALTH TIP
SNOOZE TO LOSE!
.
It's hard not to gain weight during the holiday season, let alone lose it, - and it's not only because of all of the fattening goodies available! Between work, home, family, and shopping, you may not be getting enough sleep. According to our favorite health guru, Dr. Oz, sleep is an important factor in weight loss. He recommends seven to eight hours of sleep to stabilize your hormone levels. Lack of sleep causes an increase in the hormone Grehlin which causes hunger and fat retention. Try going to bed an hour earlier and see what happens. Your energy level should increase and you might even lose a few pounds!

FIND MONEY FOR HOLIDAY SHOPPING!
Check out how many 'reward points' you have accumulated on your credit card and use them to buy gift cards online at favorite stores for family and friends. The online websites for these rewards are easy to navigate and there is an abundance of choices including restaurants, stores and movie theaters, or you can even purchase a pre-paid Visa or Mastercard. You can also receive cash, but not as much in 'buying power' as you receive when you apply the points to a gift card. Since FLASH strongly believes in supporting our local merchants, this is a good way to do it. Those gift cards will be spent locally, unlike merchandise that you purchase online.
