YOLANDA ORTIZ

 YOLANDA ORTIZ

IS A POSITIVE PERSON

I am sure we can all say that at some point we have encountered people in our lives that warm our spirits, brighten our day, lend an ear, and lighten the load. These personalities are the epitome of a 'Positive Person.'  This week it is our privilege to spotlight one such young lady.  Yolanda Ortiz is the Office Manager at Childcare Resources. She is the first person that people usually come into contact with and from that moment she spends her time building a relationship with the families. During her lunch breaks and on her way home, she doesn't steal time for herself. Instead, she  can often  be found at one  of the  centers where  she  will  play  with the children and rock the little ones.  Pam King, Executive Director of Childcare Resources, stated that, "I don't think there has ever been a time that Yolanda wasn't positive and professional. You will never know if she is having a bad day or not feeling well, she is always a constant." The families with whom Yolanda interacts on a daily basis are often experiencing great hardship and she is frequently the person they will turn to 'unload'. Yolanda is cognizant of this and readily extends her smile and compassion. The feedback and appreciation she receives from the families is her motivation. Yolanda is a single Mom raising two incredible children ages 10 and 17. When she isn't busy at work she is devoting her time to her family and enjoys walks on the beach and taking classes at Indian River Community College.  It would serve us all well to remember the truly important things in life ..especially during the difficult times of the recent past. Family, Friends and helping others! Thank you Yolanda for keeping us mindful of this. You truly are a 'Positive Person' and you bring joy into the lives of so many! For that we salute you!

Would you believe there is an extremely rare 1969 Lincoln penny worth $35,000?! After you check the following website, you might want to look over the contents of the family piggy bank!  coins.about.com/od/uscoins/tp/errorvarieties.htm

ANSWER TO

"HOW MANY TREATS IN THE JAR?"

candy jar

If you visited the Vero Beach Flash Booth on Oct. 9th at the Crosslife Family Jamboree at the Fairgrounds you may have written a number to guess how many candies there were in the glass jar. The exact number was 317 and Crystal Cade won with her guess of 315! Our winner teaches 3rd grade at Allapattah Flats in Fort Pierce and plans on taking the jar of treats to her class! Congrats Crystal!

SECRETARIAT'S MOST FAMOUS RACE!
Secretariat
The new Disney movie SECRETARIAT portrays the life of what most people say is the greatest racehorse of all time. His records in both the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes in 1973 have never been broken. When he won the Belmont by 31 lengths in '73, he also won the Triple Crown that year! Flash recommends the movie for your entire family, but if you would like to see the actual 1973 Belmont race, click the link below.

Interesting Note:
When Secretariat died at the age of 19, an autopsy was performed. It showed that he had an extremely large heart at 21 lbs. when most thoroughbreds average about 9 lbs. There has been speculation as to whether this had anything to do with his amazing success.

A  FACELIFT FROM GREEN PEAS???
We hadn't heard of this one!

Most chefs know that a green vegetable or garnish adds appetizing color to a meal. Just a few years ago it seemed that for any restaurant meal the choice was always green peas (or carrots and peas). Then along came broccoli with green peasall of its health benefits and you hardly ever see peas anymore. That might change after this report from Alice Tannis in her book FEED YOUR SKIN, STARVE YOUR WRINKLES.

Green peas are loaded with 8 vitamins and 7 minerals along with fiber and protein. It seems that peas have a multitude of skin friendly nutrients that do a good job of controlling the inflammation and free radical damage that depletes the skin of collagen and elastin which are needed to keep the skin in firm, bounce-back shape.

So, eat your peas, whether they're in split pea soup or mixed with your rice or mashed potatoes. One way to enjoy them is by adding frozen peas to a green salad. By the time you toss and serve the salad, they should have thawed.

RECIPE OF THE WEEK
PUMPKIN OR JACK O'LANTERN CHEESE BALL
pumpkin cheese ball

In a glass bowl, cream together:
2 packs shredded extra sharp cheddar cheese
1 block cream cheese
1 block chive & onion cream cheese
Add some paprika and Tabasco sauce and blend

Cover and chill for about 4 hours or until it is firm enough to shape into a ball.  Then, wrap the ball in plastic wrap and refrigerate it for a few hours so it sets up. Use the back of a regular kitchen knife to create the pumpkin ribs (vertical lines around the pumpkin). Top it off with a piece of broccoli stalk or celery to create the pumpkin stalk at the top. Keep it refrigerated until party time when you set it out on a plate surrounded by crackers or try apple wedges as shown in the picture. If you want to create a jack o' lantern, cut triangles from black olives to form the features.
