Time to Celebrate Thanksgiving

Thanksgiving is just a week from today so you will find a lot of information in this issue to help you with your planning, including cooking the meal (even shooting the turkey yourself!), decorations, tips if you're traveling and more. This will be a big issue, because our staff is taking next week off to spend with our families. We hope you will do the same and have a wonderful, relaxing holiday! Remember, No FLASH next week, but go ahead and send us your posts and ads for the Thursday, Dec. 2nd issue when we'll start talking Christmas!

WHY DO WE EAT TURKEY ON THANKSGIVING?

It is believed that beef (probably venison) and fowl were served during the feast celebrated by Plymouth colonists and Wampanoag Indians. It's assumed turkey was in the banquet because of a letter written by Edward Winslow mentioning going on a turkey hunt before the meal. Winslow was the first Governor of the Plymouth Colony and credited with making friends of the Wampanoag chief, so he was probably instrumental in planning the legendary feast with the Indians. If you or a family member is a hunter, check out the link in the post below giving all the information you need for hunting in our State!

Saint Edward's to Name Activity Center after Wachters

Saint EdwardsOn Tuesday, November 23rd at 8:45 a.m. Saint Edward's School will hold a special All-School Assembly in the Waxlax Theatre for the Performing Arts to honor Saint Edward's faculty member Joanie Wachter and Head of the Upper School, Bruce Wachter. The naming of the Wachter Activity Center was initiated by long-time Saint Edward's supporters, Lorne and Heidi Waxlax of Vero Beach. In recognition of a significant gift made by the Waxlax family to Saint Edward's School's Pirate Fund for debt relief, they asked Saint Edward's to name the Activity Center in honor of Joanie and Bruce Wachter.  Joanie and Bruce have been instrumental figures in the lives of so many children for over three decades. The Waxlax children, Robert (class of 2000), and Christina (class of 2004), attended Saint Edward's and were beneficiaries of the enormous love and skill of these two wonderful educators.

ENTERTAINING SENIORS AT THANKSGIVING

Seniors especially enjoy family get-togethers, so be sure to include them in your Thanksgiving dinner plans. While Seniors with Dementia or Alzheimer's may have problems with current memory, they frequently will remember happy events from  long ago. Try to have family albums available to help remind them. After dinner the whole family might enjoy viewing a Thanksgiving video from the past.

If they are handicapped in any way, Champion can help get them to your celebration. Whether the senior is living at home or in an assisted living facility, we will be happy to send one of our caregivers to their residence to assist them with bathing and dressing, as well as provide transportation to and from the event if needed. The caregiver can also stay with them if they need assistance with the meal itself rather than have a family member have to do this task. Let us know how we can help!

                                           HOLIDAY  TRAVEL  TIPS
Thanksgiving Weekend is the busiest travel time of the year. This year, 4% will be traveling by air and 94% by car. (The remaining 2 % must be going by bus, or else they're walking!)

DRIVING

If you're traveling by car, be careful! Last year there were 411 deaths on the road.
Tailgating is always a problem. Leave one (1) car length between you and the car ahead of you for every 10 mph you're traveling! If someone is tailgating you, change lanes or pull over and let them pass! Avoid road rage!
.
Set Cruise Control. This will save you gas as well as keep you from inching up your speed. We don't want any tickets!
.
Finally NO TEXTING and it's a good idea to get a non hands device for your cell phones!

FLASH  FASHION  TIP  OF  THE WEEK

Brought to you by Penelope's

penelope's banner

black dressEveryone is going to need that one wardrobe staple as the holidays draw near...'The Little Black Dress.' The secret .... every woman looks great wearing it. It has a reputation as the default ensemble for those "I don't have a thing to wear" nights. It has become so popular throughout time that you can actual do a google search for 'history of the Little Black Dress' and a litany of articles will appear. So...here it is. Black, made its debut in 1926 after previously being considered to be a funereal color, one worn during periods of mourning. CHANEL was the first designer to come up with the sleeveless, little black sheath, cut just above the knee. Truly simple and sexy, Chanel could have never predicted the immediate and lasting love women would have with her simple, chic black dress. The one pictured above can be seen at Penelope's on Beachland Blvd. Go check it out!

HEALTH TIP

BLOCK UV RAYS WITH SWEET POTATOES?
Sweet potatoes are usually on a Thanksgiving menu so feel free to dig in and eat up! Accordinyamsg to a recent report in Women's World Magazine, sweet potatoes contain  more beta-carotene than any other vegetable, even carrots. Just two servings a week have been found to build up enough beta-carotene in your skin to actually block UV rays and even reverse age spots and sun damage! The reason is that it converts to Vitamin A in your body which promotes the production of collagen and protects against skin becoming dry and flaking.

DON'T LET YOURcooked turkey TURKEY SCARE YOU! person scared

So many people seem to be afraid to cook a turkey. Not to worry...25 minutes per pound in a 325 degree oven and it's done. You can get out your calculator and do the math or make it even easier and go to the website below for Reynolds Aluminum Foil. You can get tips for the whole meal and even more tips for easy clean-up. Years ago, our ancestors used to set their alarm clocks and get up at the crack of dawn to make sure the turkey had time to cook. Now, thanks to modern cooking methods - like  foil and cooking bags, it takes a lot less time.

  http://reynoldspkg.com/reynoldskitchens/en/info_page/Cooking_Tips.asp

Make sure you use a meat thermometer, or buy a turkey like "Butterball" that has one built-in. You'll find more turkey tips (including carving)  at their website at http://www.butterball.com/.

HOW BIG A TURKEY DO YOU NEED TO BUY?

Allow for 1 lb. per person to include leftovers. If you're having a large crowd, you may want to purchase 2 small birds rather than 1 large, or 1 small and an extra turkey breast. Plan your grocery list according to number of servings for veggies, pies, etc. at this handy chart from Good Housekeeping:

www.goodhousekeeping.com/cm/goodhousekeeping/PDF/thanksgiving-servings-chart.pdf

If we still haven't convinced you how easy it is, do this. Buy individual Cornish Game Hens for each person and just follow the package directions. It's like giving each of your guests their own individual, mini turkey!

Note: DO NOT stuff the turkey the night before. Even refrigerated, this can invite food poisoning!

THANKSGIVING DECORATING IDEAS

CENTERPIECE

pumkin centerpieceHalloween may be over, but there are still a lot of pumpkins around! Consider hollowing one out and using it for a vase as pictured here. Just fill it with well soaked Oasis Floral Foam and put in your choice of flowers. Real Sunflowers with some artificial fall leaves would be pretty. Even easier, forget the foam and set a  potted plant in the pumpkin. A potted mum plant would be lovely!

PLACE-CARDS

If you're having a large group, you may want to have place-cards. Walnuts make great place-card holders. Just open the seam of the nut slightly with a table knife. Write the name of the guest on a card and place it in the seam. You may want to scatter a few walnuts and autumn leaves around the base of your centerpiece .

  guord candle

CANDLES

Small gourds or acorn squash make great candle holders. Hollow out a space the size of a votive candle to hold the small candle. Wine glasses can also hold votive candles and be grouped or put one by each place.

 RECIPE OF THE WEEK
MOM'S (EASIER THAN IT LOOKS)TURKEY GRAVY

Everybody loves Mom's Southern Turkey Gravy, so we asked her if we could share her 'sneaky' secret. (It's mushroom soup!) Now it's out in the open, so tell your friends and enjoy. Because it's a milk based gravy, it will be light in color.

gravy

INGREDIENTS

'Giblets'

(These are the neck, liver and gizzard usually found in a

sealed sack in the neck cavity of  super market turkeys.)

1 box Swanson (or store brand) Chicken Broth

1 can Cream of Mushroom Soup

1 soup can of Milk

2 Hard Boiled Eggs, chopped

2 Tablespoons of Corn Starch

1/2 cup of cold water

Pepper and Poultry Seasoning to taste. (optional)

  Turkey pan drippings (optional)

  • In large sauce pan, place the Giblets in a full box of Swanson No-Fat Chicken Broth.  Bring to a boil, then turn low until  thoroughly cooked.
  • Once cooked remove and finely chop giblets and remove meat from turkey neck. (Do not throw out the broth)
  • Return giblets to pan with broth and mix in mushroom soup and milk
  • Heat before SLOWLY adding corn starch that you have mixed with 1/2 cup of cold tap water.  Continue to add until you get the consistency you want. Gravy will almost thicken immediately as you add the corn starch and will not clump like flour. Feel free to mix a little more starch if you want thicker gravy.
  • Add two chopped hard boiled eggs and continue cooking on low for 5-min.
  • Add pepper and salt.... and poultry seasoning if desired
  • You may add some of the turkey drippings. This will add fat ...but who's counting calories at Thanksgiving?
  • You can increase the quantity by adding more broth and/or milk and thickening accordingly.

If it's close to serving time, you can keep warm on the stove. Otherwise, refrigerate and re-heat later. (Never leave any type of cream sauce dish out without heat or refrigeration.) We don't want any sick 'Flashers.'

SAVINGS TIP OF THE WEEK!

piggy bank

THANKSGIVING SAVINGS TIP

TURN ONE MEAL INTO MANY

turkey tetrazzini

One of the best things about Thanksgiving is leftovers, so make the most of your turkey this year. A 12-pound turkey can generously feed a family of eight with plenty of leftovers. Of course you'll use them for sandwiches, but you can make Creamed Turkey too. If you use our Milk Gravy Recipe, make extra. Just add turkey and serve over Biscuits. Add some fresh Sauteed Mushrooms, and it's also good mixed with spaghetti pasta for Turkey Tetrazzini. If you add Curry Powder to the gravy, serve it over Rice for a completely different entree for another night...and all of these ideas will freeze!

For the last 3 years the Vero Beach Art Club has put on a tour around Vero of ten artist's studios/homes and each year the event gets bigger.  Last year the tour was sold out so be sure to get tickets early (sales begin in November).  Artists range from sculptors, jewelers, potters, painters, fiber artists and photographers plus more.  This is an opportunity to view their work as you are treated to an intimate peek into the process while hearing the artists tell about their personally unique techniques.  Ten studios/homes are open from 10 am to 4 pm and may be visited in any order at your own pace.  Light refreshments will be served at each stop.  This is a great way to unwind before the holidays and possibly find that perfect present for someone special (which could be you) who would love to own a unique work of art.  Make this a great day to vist with friends or partneers as you are immersed in the artist experience.  Tickets to this event are also a great pre-holiday present to give to employees, your volunteers or to a group of friends.  Please call the Vero Beach Art Club for more details (772-231-0303) or visit the website, www.VeroBeachArtClub.org.  Event held Saturday, December 4th, 2010.  All proceeds go to fund the Vero Beach Art Club Scholarships given out each year to deserving high school seniors going on to an art-related course of study.
