Robi and Sandy moved to North Hutchinson Island, Fort Pierce from Massachusetts in 2003. Their roots were strongly planted in Christian homes that instilled values and the importance of helping others. They became involved in volunteering in Vero through their involvement in the Community Church of Vero and have been very busy serving for the past six years! Sandy serves on the Missions' Board at the church, Board Member & Program Chair for the Harvest Food & Outreach Center, Member of the Homelessness Awareness Week Committee and volunteer cook for The Source. Robi is a member of Kiwanis, Youth in Action volunteer, Advisor to St. Ed's Kiwanis Key Club, Secretary for the Missions Board at Church, Board Member at the Indian River County Food Pantry, Board Member for the Homeless Family Center, Grant writer and volunteer for "Growing Healthy Kids, Board Member for the North Beach Association and volunteer at the Sunrise Theatre in Fort Pierce. WOW! This is a couple with hearts of gold who are quoted as saying that their inspiration comes from each other. There should be no surprise how they met....as Peace Corps volunteers. They were married in St. Lucia where they were serving. Their marriage is their greatest accomplishment and they have two grown sons, Matthew of Phoenix and Adam of Boston. Robi and Sandy serve very full lives and believe it or not they still have time to pursue their interests when they are finished volunteering. Sandy enjoys cooking, reading, yoga and travel; while Robi plays tennis and golf and too enjoys reading and traveling. They obviously enjoy their calling as 'faithful servants' and they would like to encourage everyone to become involved and use their talents to help others. "To whom much is given, much is expected!" Robi and Sandy...We thank you for all that you do! We are inspired by you and are so thankful that you found your way south to Florida! You both are quite deserving of the title "Positive People!"

HOW HEALTHY IS INDIAN RIVER COUNTY?
The 2010 County Health Rankings, produced by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the University of Wisconsin's Population Health Institute, help us to understand what makes us sick or healthy according to where we live. They measured two types of health outcomes: how long people live (mortality) and how healthy people feel while alive (morbidity). You'll be pleased to know that Indian River ranked 6th of the 65 counties in FL and was in the top ten percent of the nation. St. Lucie County ranked 30th in Florida , but was still in the top 10 % nationwide. Isn't it great to live in Florida? For more details and to find rankings in other states, go to: www.countyhealthrankings.org |
GOOD NEWS FOR CHUBBY SENIORS!
According to a study done at the University of Western Australia, people over the age of 70 who were overweight but not obese had a 13% lower risk of death from all causes. The theory is that extra fat provides a metabolic reserve which older people need to help them recover from an illness. Anyone who is 30 or more pounds overweight is considered obese, so don't gain more than 29 pounds!

WHICH WINE?

According to the publication Bottom Line Personal, without being aware of it, we let subtle sounds, smells and visuals influence our decisions. A 2007 study showed that 73% of shoppers selected a German wine from a display of both German and French wines when German music was played in the background. If the music was French, then 77% of the shoppers selected the French brand. Huh? Does that mean that if a store played Beach Boy tunes like CALIFORNIA GIRLS, shoppers would buy more California wine? Oh...the things you learn in FLASH!

Backgammon Anyone?
Backgammon players looking for a place to meet fellow players and practice their skills can meet at the food court, near the fountain, at the Indian River Mall beginning Sundays at 2 p.m. This is not a club, just a gathering to enjoy friendly competition; thus it is FREE. Jerry Nashel hopes to get enough Backgammon enthusiasts to join these gatherings to eventually play mini-tournaments. Newcomers are welcome too! Come out and enjoy playing one of the oldest board games. Each game lasts only about 15 to 20 minutes. For more information about the Backgammon gathering, call Nashel at (772) 567-2566 or e-mail verojer@aol.com.

VIDEO OF THE WEEK
INCREDIBLE SWAN LAKE VIDEO!
Even if you aren't a ballet fan, you will find this brief video of the Swan Lake Ballet incredible. Performed by the GREAT CHINESE STATE CIRCUS, it looks more like a cross between the Russian Ballet and a Cirque du Soleil performance, only more so! How do they do that?

WHICH PET FOOD IS BEST?
A recent survey conducted by Consumer Reports found that many experts state that expensive pet food isn't necessarily better. When experts at seven top veterinary schools were asked, most said they fed common brand pet food found in grocery stores to their own pets. It is better to read the nutrition label rather than pay a high price and assume that you are getting better quality. Look for the words, "complete and balanced" on the label."

LIBRARY VOLUNTEERS WILL HELP
TO FIND YOUR FAMILY TREE!
The Indian River County Library enters its new fiscal year in October. They face very large budget cuts made by the County Commission. Staff has been cut, expenses pared to the bone and library hours sliced. One of those cuts was to eliminate Saturday hours in the upstairs Genealogy Department of the main library in downtown Vero Beach. To help the IRC Library deal with the budget cuts as it enters its new fiscal year in October, seven members of the Indian River Genealogical Society (IRGS) have volunteered to staff the Genealogy Department.
Hours = 1st and 3rd Saturday of each month --- 10 AM - 4 PM There will be no paid staff on duty in this department on Saturdays, only the following IRGS volunteers. Marsha Braun, JoAnn Buckner, Alice and Dave Gorman, Pete Kersey, and Sharon Robertson on a regular basis. Diane MacGowan will be on standby.
The department continues its hours Mon. - Fri. 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM. For information about the IRGS, please check the website www.irgs.org. For more information about the Genealogy Department of the IRC Main Library, visit its website www.irclibrary.org/genealogy.

HEALTH BENEFITS OF STRAWBERRIES
Lately it seems that we've been hearing so much about the health benefits of blueberries (and they are wonderful), but don't overlook the health value of strawberries. Strawberries are still plentiful in the market and are considerably less expensive than other berries. Look for berries that are red all the way to the tip, a sign that they're fully ripe because strawberries don't ripen after picking. Without their stems, strawberries get waterlogged, so wash thoroughly before stemming.
Packed With Vitamin C!
Ounce for ounce, strawberries have more Vitamin C than oranges. Eating Vitamin C-rich foods keeps your brain functioning smoothly and helps your body rebuild blood vessels, tendons, ligaments, and bones. Along with potassium (also plentiful in strawberries), Vitamin C can help keep your blood pressure low.
Loaded With Antioxidants!
Strawberries get their vivid red color from anthocyanins, potent antioxidants that help reduce inflammation (a major symptom in many chronic diseases) and may also curb the growth of cancer cells. Other antioxidants in strawberries, known as ellagitannins, are effective cancer fighters, particularly against colon and cervical cancers.
Betcha' Didn't Know!
Surprisingly, the strawberry plant is a member of the rose family and technically the berry is not a fruit at all -- at least not the red part. What we think of as the berry is actually the strawberry's fleshy receptacle. The 200 or so tiny golden seeds that dot the outside of each strawberry are the actual fruits.
Funny Fact!
Strawberries used to be used in combination with baking soda as a folk remedy for cleaning teeth (thanks to their malic acid) and freshening breath. Hmmmm!! |
