TODAY IS VETERAN'S DAY

Enjoy a bit of patriotism as you watch/listen to the choirs from the academies for the armed forces join together in this beautiful rendition of our national anthem. We are certain that our Flashers join us in sending our heart-felt gratitude to all the men and women, both past and present, that put their life on the line for us and our country. Words are not enough...

US National Anthem by the Academy Choirs
HOW DID WE COME TO CELBRATE VETERANS DAY ON NOVEMBER 11TH? World War I - known at the time as "The Great War" - officially ended when the Treaty of Versailles was signed on June 28, 1919, in the Palace of Versailles outside the town of Versailles, France. However, fighting ceased seven months earlier when an armistice, or temporary cessation of hostilities, between the Allied nations and Germany went into effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. For that reason, November 11, 1918, is generally regarded as the end of "the war to end all wars."

A friend of Team FLASH that resides in Port St. Lucie for part of the year lost her nephew  on Tuesday to the  war in Afghanistan.
U.S. Marine 2nd Lt. Robert M. Kelly was 29 years old and graduated from FSU in 2003. The decorated officer was a member of a family with tremendous commitment and sense of duty to our country. Robert Kelly was the son of Lt. General John F. Kelly, well known on Capitol Hill as a former legislative aide to the commandant of the Marine Corps and brother to John Kelly, a U.S. Marine. Kelly had a quick wit, a fondness for history and ice hockey and a deep love of country. He paid the ultimate sacrifice during his third combat deployment when he was killed while conducting combat operations in  Afghanistan.

Kelly married his bride, Heather Landry on June 30, 2007. salute1Team Flash asks that our 'FLASH' subscribers say a prayer for the Kelly family, as well as for our country and for all who serve so selflessly to insure our freedoms!  May we never take them or our precious freedoms for granted.  On this Veteran's Day we salute a fallen hero and his entire family!

Robert Kelly had a distinguished military career that included the following service awards: the Purple Heart, the Combat Action Ribbon, the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal, the Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Humanitarian Service Medal, the Iraq Campaign Medal, the Afghanistan Combat Medal and the Sea Service Deployment Ribbon.

SPRING FLOWERS....NOT!

Floral pattern fashion tipEveryone thinks of florals come Spring and the thought continues throughout the warm summer months. But what about Fall? Or Winter? The answer is a definite ...  YES!  Versatile floral patterns for different seasons brighten up any outfit and instantly put a little 'Spring' into your attitude on even the coldest of days. Living here in sunny Florida gives us even more leeway in what floral patterns are considered versatile for Fall and Winter. Our mild temperatures make most floral patterns appropriate all year long. Add a touch of romance with one of the many floral patterns available on sheer, flowing fabrics that may be layered or worn on their own.

HEALTH TIP

Health Benefits of Salmon

Salmon is an extremely nutritious food. High in protein, it contains over half of the necessary B12, niacin, and selenium, is an excellent source of B6 and magnesium, and is one of the rare foods providing a full day's requirement of vitamin D. Possibly more important, it is high in Omega-3 (the good) fats.

Omega-3 fats work to reduce inflammation in our bodies which is at the base of many health problems, including heart disease, diabetes, some cancers and arthritis. Omega-3's can also help prevent the blood clots which cause many strokes. A recent study shows these fats have potential to slow cognitive problems such as Alzheimer's and age-related cognitive decline. People who have sufficient levels of omega-3's seem to have less depression and suicide risk, as well as less aggression.

THINK SALMON IS TOO EXPENSIVE?... SOLUTION!

salmon cans
Thinking...This is great, but who can afford salmon? Here's the solution: Buy canned Alaskan pink salmon at less than $3.00 for 4 servings! It is canned from wild salmon, which has slightly more health benefits than the farm raised variety and, according to a study from Tufts University, it has even more Omega-3s than cooked fresh salmon. You will find many recipes for canned salmon on the web. It can be used instead of tuna fish or in your favorite crabcake recipe instead of crab. Try www.allrecipes.com .

Note: Don't worry about the skin and small round bones you find in the salmon. The skin is loaded with good oils and the bones are pure calcium! Mixed into the recipe, they will go unnoticed.

"CHILDREN  OF  EDEN"

November 20th & 21st

Presented by Vero Beach High School Drama Department

performance of art

The Drama Department presents their fall musical "Children of Eden" on Saturday, November 20th @ 7:30 pm and Sunday, November 21st @ 7:00 pm in the Vero Beach High School Performing Arts Center located at 1707 16th street in Vero Beach. Freely based on the story of Genesis, "Children Of Eden" is a frank, heartfelt and often humorous examination of the age-old conflict between parents and children. Adam, Eve, Noah and the "Father" who created them, deal with the headstrong, cataclysmic actions of their respective children. The show ultimately delivers a bittersweet but inspiring message: that "the hardest part of love... is letting go."  Individual Tickets are only $10 for the upper Mezzanine level and $12 for the lower orchestra level. All seating is reserved. To order tickets, call the Box Office at 772-564-5537.  RECIPE OF THE WEEK
 peanut butter fudge
   OUR FAMILY'S PEANUT BUTTER FUDGE
Did you know that November is " Peanut Butter Lovers' Month?" (There's a month for everything, isn't there?!) Anyway, our family loves peanut butter all the time, but this month gives us an extra excuse and this recipe is one of our favorites. Since peanut butter is loaded with protein, somehow we don't feel as guilty eating this candy!  It also makes a great little homemade gift for the holidays.

6 Heaping Tablespoons peanut butter (crunchy or smooth)
1 Cup milk
4 Cups sugar
salt  to taste (optional)

Combine all ingredients and boil to soft ball stage (About 10 minutes).
(In case you don't already know - 'soft ball stage' means when you drop a bit into cool water, you are able to form a soft ball while it's still in the water.)
Take off stove and beat with a spoon until slightly cooled.
Pour into a greased pan or glass casserole.
When cool, cut into 1 inch pieces and invite us over!

SAVINGS TIP OF THE WEEK!

SAVE TIME AND MONEY ON GIFT WRAPPING!

The holidays will soon be upon us and it will be time to think about wrapping all those gifts! Most of us have discovered how convenient and time saving it is to use gift bags and they can also be recycled for another occasion. We prefer to buy white or other solid color ones. They are usually less expensive than printed ones and can be adapted for any holiday. Your local 'dollar' store is a good source for these.

paper shredderFor filling, instead of purchasing tissue in various colors, here's a great idea! Use your paper shredder and shred colorful magazine and catalog pages or bits of scrap gift wrapping left from other occasions. The result is colorful 'grass' that will peek out over the tops of your gift bags!

NOTE: If you don't already own a paper shredder, you can purchase one for home use for as little as $25. Shredding is a great way to protect yourself from identity theft.
