WHEW!

political cartoon

The election is finally over and Team FLASH hopes that all 'FLASHERS' exercised their right to vote!  With one of the most contentious elections behind us, we are certain that we all agree on one thing ... and that is that we are thrilled that the campaign commercials are OVER and there is no longer an incredible amount of campaign mail in our boxes!

Some mid-term election trivia...

Tuesday's election results show the largest repudiation of an incumbent party since the election following the enactment of Social Security in 1935. However, such a large repudiation often has a back swing. History has shown that a large mid-term repudiation will frequently be followed by the re-election of the incumbent president.  Well...hmmm...there's a little something for everyone in that bit of info. What's left for us to do now??... sit back and hope that our newly elected officials will work together to bring about positive results and a better economy!

MEET NATALIE!

At Champion, our goal is to feel like family!  So, what better way to achieve that goal than to introduce you to one of our crucial staff members who is the Assistant Director of Nursing, Natalie Buttenbock/LPN. No she doesn't fly but that is about the only thing she doesn't do while ensuring that each of Champion's clients receive all the help they need! Natalie may not have X-ray vision either but she can certainly see when a client needs help right away and she does not wait for the insurance company's bureaucratic red tape to untangle before she takes action. To say that Natalie will go the extra mile is an understatement. Proof of that is when one of our clients found themself in Vero and their vehicle in Stuart, Natalie came to the rescue and volunteered to drive with another Champion Aid to pick up the car and bring it to the client's new residence. This is definitely not inchampion home health care Natalie's job description. It is reflective however of a close friend or family member and that is how we think of each of our clients!  We want to feel like family!  Call us today if we can help you or a loved one with anything.   LIFE INSURANCE

AND WHAT YOU MAY BE WORTH

life insurance

Most families realize the value of insuring a wage earner in the family, but Marvin Feldman, President and CEO of  the non-profit Life and Health Insurance Foundation for Education (LIFE), says it takes about $117,000 a year to replace a non-working spouse.  "Most people don't understand the impact of what a stay-at-home spouse saves a family."

With the many expenses involved in raising a family, Life Insurance is frequently put on the back burner. To help determine whether you need it and/or what type to  purchase, you might want to use this calculator from LIFE.

LIFE is an independent and non-profit organization dedicated to helping people make wise insurance decisions. Consequently, you can rely on the information and also know that it will not be used by someone who just wants to sell you a policy. To use the calculator, go to their website at:  www.lifehappens.org/life-insurance/life-calculator.

CHECK OUT COLLEGE SAVINGS PLANS!

Historically, college costs have risen an average of about 5% a year. At that rate, a child in kindergarten today will need more than $126,000 for four years of tuition and expenses at an in-state public college. (Ouch!) If you currently have a child from newborn through 11th grade,  you might want to look into a college savings plan now.

graduationThe Florida Prepaid College Board has four affordable Prepaid Plan choices that offer families the ability to prepay the cost of college tuition and required fees.  To further save for college costs, you may also consider adding the University Dormitory Plan for on-campus housing expenses or consider opening a Florida College Investment Plan that can be used for any qualified college expense. Each plan offers a pathway that leads to a college education. For a more in-depth look at each of the plans, click on the link below.

Helpful idea: Some grandparents may want to participate in the plan in lieu of birthday or other gifts!

SEA SALT vs. TABLE SALT

saltIt seems we have heard a lot about 'sea salt' lately, but according to a report from Mayo Clinic, sea salt and table salt have the same basic nutritional value and both consist mostly of two minerals - sodium and chloride.  Sea salt is often marketed as a more natural and healthy alternative, but the real difference is in their taste, texture and processing, not their chemical makeup. Sea salt is produced through evaporation of seawater and comes in a variety of coarseness levels. Table salt is mined from underground salt deposits and usually contains an additive to prevent clumping. Most table salt also has added iodine, an essential nutrient for thyroid function that appears naturally in very small amounts in sea salt.

By weight, sea salt and table salt contain about the same amount of sodium chloride. Your body needs only a couple hundred milligrams a day to stay healthy, but most people get far too much - mostly from sodium in processed foods. So regardless of which type of salt you prefer, keep sodium consumption between 1,500 and 2,300 mg of sodium a day. People with high blood pressure should aim for the low end of that range.
