Holiday Greetings!

聖誕節快樂 / 圣诞节快乐 (Shèngdànjié kuàilè) -  means "Merry Christmas!" in Chinese

Nadelik looan na looan blethen noweth - is "Happy Christmas" and "Happy New Year" in Cornish

'A'yād Sa'īdah - is Arabic for "Happy Holidays"

Did you know there are well over 50 different non-English greetings for Christmas and even more for the many other cherished events that are celebrated this time of year around the world?  Wikipedia is amazing!

With all the hustle and bustle surrounding this time of year it is easy to forget how truly special the holiday season is and can be. We at Brian Carter Cellars hope you can find your own special way to celebrate, relax, reflect and renew.  Cheers!

Thank you to all of you who visited us during the Saint Nick's Open House weekend in Woodinville.  It was nice to see so many wine club members and returning guests, as well as meeting new friends who had never visited us before.  We hope you enjoyed the decorations, the festive music and the wines.

If you did visit us during Saint Nick's, don't forget to bring your St Nick's Return Visit Coupon when you come back in December or January.  Just show the card to receive a 20% discount on all regularly priced wine purchases.

Vintage 2010 - A Message From Brian

Well, among the many good things I can say about the 2010 vintage is that it is over!! The last grapes are out of the winery. Now we are busy assessing what we have while trying to take a day off here and there to make up for a lot of long hours.

In summary we harvested just over 100 tons of grapes from 11 different Washington vineyards.  This consisted of a dizzying 19 varieties this year including the addition of Graciano which I expect to use in the 2010 Corrida blend.  This intensely spicy grape is originally from the Rioja area of Spain and the results this year are exciting to say the least. In total for 2010 we have about 250 barrels of wine, which includes some 60 + separate lots.

The characteristics of the vintage were cool and wet which made for some challenges.  Indeed heat accumulation in warm areas like the Wahluke Slope where Stone Tree Vineyard is located was closer to what we typically see in the Yakima Valley or some 15% lower than the relatively warm 2009 vintage. While cooler areas experienced a less dramatic drop in heat some varieties struggled to ripen. I have often said that Washington's best wines come from the warmest sites in the cooler vintages and the coolest sites in the warmest vintages and this year's harvest definitely fits into the former category, with the vineyards in the Wahluke Slope, Benton City, Horse Heaven Hills and Snipes Mountain leading the way with excellent wines. Over all I felt that 80% of the wines were very good to excellent, with everything else being good. A few grapes suffered from lower sugars and the late rains forced us to inspect the fruit even more carefully than normal as we hand sorted. Ultimately this was a year when winemakers who have had more experience had the advantage.  Our emphasis on blending here at Brian Carter Cellars will be very helpful, together with our sourcing from a wide variety of climatic regions within Washington.  I feel that 2010 will give me a lot of 'colors on the palate' to choose from when it comes time to do my blends.

Varietal character is particularly strong this year, colors are intense in the red wines and tannins seem to be relatively soft and round.  While it is early to pick my favorite varieties I know there are some particular standouts among the Grenache and Merlot as well as all the white varieties used to make Oriana.

I'll let you know where things stand in our next Cellarmaster Newsletter when everything is racked and I have had a chance to really get a hand on each of those 250 separate barrels and I am looking ahead to the blends.

Features

baroloLeo, Salvio, and Roberto Varchetta are three brothers, originally from Naples, whose history in Seattle restaurants dates back to 1980.  Today they own and operate two of the finest Italian restaurants in Seattle, an achievement made more significant when you consider how many good Italian Restaurant options exist in this town. The most topical restaurant is the the new Mama Melina restaurant, relocated this year to a larger and more upscale location near the University Village on 25th Ave NE .  In addition to the elegant décor, lively bar and great menu, one of the highlights of Mama's new location is the outdoor seating area where you can relax and enjoy a marvelous Seattle evening even when the May nights might have a little chill due to the cozy upholstered chairs under multiple heat lamps.

Barolo Ristaurante which opened in 2006 is their more familiar downtown location on Westlake near the Westin Hotels.  There, Chef Maurizio Milazzo never fails to offer up a sumptuous assortment of classic Northern Italian classics, often made with their own in house pasta, along with exquisitely fresh seasonal offerings.   Spend some time on the wine list where you will find Brian Carter Cellars wines prominently displayed along with a great selection of Italian and other Northwest wines all carefully chosen by Leo himself.  If you are ever in the area during happy hour they have one of the best deals in food and wine anywhere in Seattle.  And don't forget to sit down at the bar even if it's only for a quick glass of Prosecco, the people are friendly and the back lit Italian stone will grab your attention.
