¡Corrida!
|
|
Extra! Extra!
By now, most friends of BCC know that we made a very limited amount of the
2006 Corrida, our Tempranillo-based
Spanish blend. Although we made more in 2007 we kept it under wraps just for
our wine club members. Now that we
have delivered the majority of the Winter Wine Club wine we have some extra
cases of the 2007 Corrida that we are about to release to the public. That's right you can
actually buy more! Priced to the
public at $36, Wine Club members pay just $30.60 until it is gone. To complement your Corrida we are now carrying special Spanish fare including
Olvida Tapinade, Pico's breadsticks, Spanish chocolate, olive oil, Priorat
black empelre olives and a fabulous fig bread.

Greetings!
The Cellarmaster Returns
We are using Washington Wine Month as a great
excuse to reintroduce Cellarmaster, our monthly newsletter to keep you updated on all the
happenings at Brian Carter Cellars,
including our new wine offerings, upcoming events and news about the Washington
wine industry. We hope you enjoy
it and will help us to improve it each and every month. So let us know if you
have any wine related questions or ideas for upcoming stories.
On The Vine
In the vineyard the plants are still dormant not
withstanding some sap which is beginning to flow up from the roots bringing
nutrients and chemical signals to the buds to wake up, start and soon to
grow. It won't be long before we
see the buds start to swell followed by little green leaves emerging from their
winter dormancy, along with their primordial grape clusters. Here we go again!
Meanwhile the vineyard workers are finishing up their
pruning and getting the tractors and other farm equipment serviced and ready
for the long season ahead. All
indications are that we should have an early bud break which on the good side
could get us a head start on the ripening process. On the down side, early bud break can also be a set up for
spring frost,so the growers are also making sure their wind machines are ready
to turn on at a moment's notice, which usually comes at 5:00 o'clock in the
morning.
In the Winery
We have just put the finishing touches on the Oriana blend,
having pulled the barrel aged portion out of the barrel and combining it with
the portion in the tank. Looks
like another super year in the string of great vintages for our famous white
wine blend. The 2009 vintage definitely
has that complex fruity nose and crisp balance that we have come to love.
Also just blended from the barrel is the new
Abracadabra Rose, a concoction of saignée from Sangiovese, Grenache, Syrah and
Cinsault. A pretty color, and as is always the case with Brian's wines, a balance which promises to go well with your favorite spring and summer
cuisine. We are bottling this
small 200 case lot in April and hope to have it to you no later than the middle
of May, just in time for enjoying the wine with its best companions, your
friends and Mr. Sunshine.

Spazzo Italian Grill and Wine Bar, located in Redmond
Town Center offers a taste of Italy in downtown Redmond. Chef Kris Evans loves creating dishes
that pair beautifully with local wines.
The menu canvas is painted with garlic, fresh herbs,
cheeses, beef, pork and a wide variety of seafood and vegetables. The antipasti
display showcases a wide variety of appetizers perfect for sharing. Fresh
pastas and salads, slow-roasted meats and unique pizzas continue the experience
leading up to the housemade desserts and espresso.
Of course no Italian experience would be complete
without the wine! Spazzo Italian Grill & Wine Bar features a temperature
controlled "cellar" stocked with an award-winning list. The wine list
emphasizes the diversity of the regions, Super Tuscans, Amarone, Barbaresco,
Chianti and Pinot Grigio. The wine bar will also feature signature cocktails
and exciting happy hour early and late.
Throughout our wine list, you will see an * by the
wines from our Woodinville neighbors. Woodinville is home to not only some of
the "legends" of the industry, like Brian Carter, but also to many of
the "rising stars".

Featured Vineyard - Farmed by Jim and Carla Willard, the Solstice VIneyard has been growing great wine grapes for 30 years.

Brian's history with the
Solstice vineyard only goes back to 1988 when he remembers his first time walking though Jim's
then 7 year old Cabernet Sauvignon block high on the Rosa above Prosser. "Between Hedges Cellars, Apex and Brian
Carter Cellars we made a lot of great wine from that bloc," recounts
Brian. Today the Solstice Vineyard
is Brian Carter Cellars second most purchased vineyard after Stone Tree. A cooler site than most, Brian is
enamored by the great fruit and balanced acidity the wines have. "They are some
of my favorite wines in many of our blends, particularly the Oriana and
Tuttorosso." In addition to
Viognier and Sangiovese, Brian also buys Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet
Franc, Syrah and Riesling. "Now that Jim is growing Roussanne, on what looks to
be a perfect site for it, we are going to add that variety to the list in 2010."
In addition to the 15 wine
grape varieties at Solstice, Jim also grows Apples and Cherries. Members of the
community since 1949, three generations of the Willard family have always been
leaders in the Prosser Community where they are participants in a number of
boards and clubs. Always
innovators their dome shaped home located on the vineyard is one of the most
unique in the state.

Featuring Mary F. Lampe
Come see our currently featured watercolor artist Mary F. Lampe.
Artist Goals: My original goal was to learn to use the
watercolor medium and paint handsome pictures. More recently, I am trying to
create images that are expressive and uniquely mine. I started by using traditional
methods with watercolors but became frustrated with the effects. I now use
these beautiful paints to try to convey a mood or something that catches my eye
like reflected light, a pattern, or an interesting scene. This takes me in
directions that are non-traditional but so far, the watercolor police haven't
caught up with me! I hope to keep on learning and always have FUN!
