IPI Board Discusses New Initiatives, Honors IPI Founder Jim Hunnicutt, CAPP

IPI Chair Casey Jones, CAPP, and the association's Board of Directors met last week in Baltimore to discuss IPI and industry initiatives. The board focused on many new items including new professional development programs, collaborative efforts with the Federal Highway Administration's efforts on parking pricing, conducting all future elections electronically, and combining ongoing efforts with the Mid-Atlantic Foundation for Safety and Education, affiliated with AAA Mid-Atlantic, to educate teen drivers about proper parking techniques and how parking regulations keep drivers safe.

Also discussed were plans for IPI to spearhead an effort to conduct a parking-specific research project in January along with parking trade associations in countries outside the U.S. The Global Parking Associations Leadership (GPALS), established by IPI in June 2012, will identify issues that affect parking operations and future industry trends in more than 20 countries.

The board, in a heartfelt gesture, unanimously chose to honor the recently deceased co-founder of IPI by renaming one of the industry's highest awards to the James M. Hunnicutt Parking Professional of the Year Award. Hunnicutt's vision and determination contributed to what is now the world's largest parking trade organization. While the industry lost a true ambassador with his passing, it is fitting that IPI name an award for someone who embodied all the best characteristics of a parking professional.  The first James M. Hunnicutt Parking Professional of the Year award will be presented on May 21, 2013, during the IPI Conference & Expo in Ft. Lauderdale, Fla.

IPI Webinar: Uncovering the Perks of Public Policy for Parking

Ever wish for solid insight into the most important and innovative parking pricing strategies that can help reduce congestion and promote livability? The Federal Highway Administration's (FHWA's) Contemporary Approaches to Parking Pricing: A Primer offers just that, serving as a resource on performance pricing of on-street parking (including metered visitor parking and residential parking permits), unbundling parking costs from housing and other real estate costs, parking cash-out in lieu of parking-only commuter benefits, and redesigning priced parking offerings (such as the monthly parking pass) to encourage using alternative transportation.

FHWA You've read about the Primer in The Parking Professional (see p. 46 of the August issue), and you might have talked with its creators at the 2012 IPI Conference & Expo. Here's your chance to hear what they and a panel of experts have to say about the research behind this valuable publication and what it means for your parking operation.

This webinar will cover the contents of the primer, projects funded by FHWA, and opportunities for parking professionals to make the most of this public policy initiative. It will also include first-hand accounts from panelists who have implemented performance pricing in their operations.
