PARK(ing) Day 2012

IPI members were among parking organizations and community groups around the world to participate in PARK(ing) Day on Friday, Sept. 21, transforming parking spaces into public gathering spaces for the day.

Invented in 2005 by San Francisco-based art and design studio Rebar, PARK(ing) Day grew to include 975 registered installations by 2011. These included transformed spaces in 160 cities on six continents. Spaces are carpeted with artificial turf, decorated with flowers and shrubs, outfitted with benches, and become public gathering spaces, art exhibitions, and a number of other interactive displays, always on the third Friday in September. Many cities have developed specialized permitting systems for the day, according to its organizers, and embraced it as a way to demonstrate public goodwill. For more information, visit www.parkingday.org.

IPI Webinar: Uncovering the Perks of Public Policy for Parking

Ever wish for solid insight into the most important and innovative parking pricing strategies that can help reduce congestion and promote livability? The Federal Highway Administration's (FHWA's) Contemporary Approaches to Parking Pricing: A Primer offers just that, serving as a resource on performance pricing of on-street parking (including metered visitor parking and residential parking permits), unbundling parking costs from housing and other real estate costs, parking cash-out in lieu of parking-only commuter benefits, and redesigning priced parking offerings (such as the monthly parking pass) to encourage using alternative transportation.

FHWA You've read about the Primer in The Parking Professional (see p. 46 of the August issue), and you might have talked with its creators at the 2012 IPI Conference & Expo. Here's your chance to hear what they and a panel of experts has to say about the research behind this valuable publication and what it means for your parking operation.

This webinar will cover the contents of the primer, projects funded by FHWA, and opportunities for parking professionals to make the most of this public policy initiative. It will also include first-hand accounts from panelists who have implemented performance pricing in their operations.

Instructors:

Allen Greenberg, Senior Policy Analyst , Federal Highway Administration
Matthew Kaufman, Director of Planning, UrbanTrans

Panelists:

Soumya S. Dey, P.E., Acting Associate Director, District Department of Transportation, Washington, D.C.
Mike Estey, Parking Operations & Traffic Manager, City of Seattle
Jay Primus, SFpark Manager, San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency

Wednesday, October 17 at 2:00 p.m. EDT/ 11:00 a.m. PDT (60 minutes)

Along with Wallmeyer's presentation of the International Parking Institute Progress Report and Parking Power Toolkit, topics covered were customer service, on-street rates, best practices for processing and citation collections, advertising in garages, and parking reservation systems. Special events included attending the Pirates vs. Brewers baseball game, the 12th Annual Design and Innovation Awards, and a keynote by Jeff Filicko, public relations manager for Kennywood Park. Jeff spoke about the parking operations and challenges at "America's Finest Traditional Amusement Park." The event highlight was when PPA presented Douglas Holmes, CAPP, with a lifetime honorary membership.

Texas Parking and Transportation Association Call for Speakers

The Texas Parking and Transportation Association will hold its annual conference April 1-4, 2013 in Austin, Texas.  The Host Committee, in coordination with the Board of Directors, is now accepting proposals for presentations for the educational portion of the conference.

Proposals are welcomed regarding any topic of interest to our industry. In addition to parking, we have had specific interest in current topics related to transportation issues.  Presentations should not be marketing pitches for particular firms, services, or products.  Successful proposals typically focus on educating the audience, presenting case studies of successes, and lessons learned from challenging projects and in depth experiences.
