IPI Hits the Road

Over the next four months, IPI will visit various IPI Allied Association annual meetings across the country offering staff and/or Technology Committee presentations.

Shawn Conrad, CAE, executive director, and Henry Wallmeyer, deputy director, will give an overview of what's new with IPI and detail the tools parking professionals can use to improve their operations and advance their careers. The IPI Technology Committee will present its Mobile Apps: How do They Apply and is the Time Right for You? -- Parking and the Mobile App Convergence, which discusses the different types of mobile phone apps and how each might fit with the operating goals of a parking organization.

Attend your local state and regional association conference to network with your peers and learn the latest in parking trends and technologies, and say hi to IPI.

IPI Webinar: Marketing Your Parking Facility

e-learning logoIf you build it, they will come. Right?

It makes for a great movie tagline, but when it comes to operating a parking facility, sitting back and waiting for customers to show up just isn't enough. The parking world is extremely competitive, and parking owners and operators need to be proactive to compete. The key to success is strategic marketing. Participate in this webinar to learn:

  • How to create a strategic marketing plan for a parking facility.
  • How to use public relations to drive business.
  • How social media is changing the rules of marketing.
  • How new parking technologies can give facilities a competitive advantage.

Instructors: Bill Smith, founder and principal, Smith Phillips Strategic Communications, and Dan Kupferman, CAPP, director of car park management systems, Walker Parking Consultants.

Wednesday, September 19 at 2:00 p.m. EDT/ 11:00 a.m. PDT (60 minutes)

Q&A Transcript from IPI's Lighting Webinar

On August 29, Donald Monahan, P.E., vice president, Walker Parking Consultants/Engineers, Inc., instructed participants on how recent advances in lighting technology have resulted in opportunities to greatly reduce energy consumption and operational costs in multi-level parking facilities. Here is an excerpt from the question and answer portion of his webinar on energy-efficient parking structure lighting.

In a pre-cast double T parking garage, what is the benefit of painting ceiling white? What about the sides of the T white?

Painting the cavity between double tee stems is most effective only in the cavity where the light fixture is located as there is not much uplight in the cavities without a light fixture.  Also the ceiling area is approximately 1.7 times the floor area in a 10 foot wide by 24 inch deep double tee to paint around all of the double tee stems.

IPI members can access the full question and answer transcript here and can access the archived webinar here.
Online ShopTalk: Delivering Exceptional Customer Service

This month's Online Shop Talk is about customer service.  Customer retention is crucial in a down economy, but slashed budgets don't always leave time or resources for going the extra mile for the customer.  We'll exchange ideas and see if we can find low-cost ways to provide high levels of customer service. The contact information of all participants will be sent to registrants following the call to allow for further offline networking.

The Online ShopTalk will be a free-form discussion led by Dan Kupferman, CAPP, director of car park management systems, Walker Parking Consultants

IPI ShopTalks are provided at no charge to IPI members*.

Tuesday, September 25 at 1:00 p.m. EDT/ 10:00 a.m. PDT (60 minutes)

*If you want to participate, make sure to join IPI and receive all the benefits.

The Parking Professional: The Best Parking Stories and Excuses from Campus

Think you've heard some great stories from people trying to talk their way out of tickets and fines? (We're partial to those featured in the June issue of The Parking Professional.) Wait until you hear the best ones from higher education.Sept TPP Cover

Late summer and early fall mean one big thing to parking professionals on college and university campuses: the return of hoards of students. Lines for permits, clogged online systems, telephones that seem to ring off the hook, and masses of unpermitted cars flooding lots on move-in day can be nothing short of headache-inducing. And then, there are the excuses. "The dog ate my homework" has nothing on some of the stories parking professionals hear from students (and the occasional professor) whose cars have been ticketed or booted. Here, we present the best ones sent in by readers of The Parking Professional. Happy back-to-school, and enjoy!

IPI Members can read all the excuses and the rest of the September issue by accessing the online version of The Parking Professional.
