IPI in the New York Times

In the last Insider, we mentioned an article that appeared in the March 25 New York Times regarding parking lots. It was written by Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) professor of urban design Eran Ben-Joseph, PH.D. The professor wrote how unsightly and underutilized parking lots are, and provided examples and ideas to transform them into multi-use areas.

After reading the article, IPI Executive Director Shawn Conrad, CAE, wrote a letter to the editor providing our input and thoughts on postive parking lot design. We are pleased to report the letter was published in the New York Times on April 2. In May you will read a feature by Dr. Ben-Joseph in The Parking Professional.  IPI is proud to proactively represent the parking industry and share our positive messages about parking.

The Parking Professional: Street Smarts

aprilcoverTexas Tech launches a motion awareness program with great results

Students riding the bus to the Texas Tech campus felt and heard a thump after their vehicle stopped to pick up more passengers. Looking out the window, they saw a student sprawled on the ground with his backpack contents scattered and his cell phone in pieces on the sidewalk around him. The student had been texting and walking, and he walked right into the side of the bus. Rattled but O.K., he picked up his things and went on his way.

New ADA Guidelines for Parking

IPI's Next Webinar: Parking ADA Self Audit

Wednesday, April 25, 2012 at 2:00 P.M. EDT

Thinking of restriping your lot/structure? It's about to get more complicated. New ADA guidelines took effect March 15, 2012 that removed safe harbor clauses of the original 1991 law. That means lots ADAimagethat are striped after March 15 must meet the latest requirements for van accessible space ratios, and "readily achievable" architectural barriers between parking areas and business must be removed. Are you ready for these changes? Join us on this webinar to learn the most common parking ADA mistakes, what items must be fixed to comply with the new guidelines, and how to use a checklist to easily audit your facility and create a realistic plan.

Instructor: Michelle Wendler, AIA, principal, Watry Design, Inc.

The Parking Professional Wins EXCEL Award

IPI's monthly magazine, The Parking Professional, won a Gold Medal for its 2011 redesign in the 2012 EXCEL Awards, administered by Association Media & Publishing.  The EXCEL Awards honor the best publishing products of the association industry; more than 1,000 publications are entered into the competition every year to be judged by an expert panel of association and publishing professionals.

The Parking Professional was chosen as the Gold winner for best redesign of a publication with a circulation of less than 50,000 based on its excellence of design, originality, technical quality, and the degree to which the design enhances the accompanying editorial material.

IPI will be recognized for this accomplishment at the 32nd Annual EXCEL Gala on June 11 in Baltimore.

The behind-the-scenes story of the redesign of the award-winning The Parking Professional was prominently featured in the Jan/Feb issue of Signature magazine, the flagship magazine of Association Media & Publishing.
