Parking Matters® and IPI in the News |
Another Parking Matters® program success: "Mobile Apps Revolutionize Municipal Parking" is an online feature of the AOL Government website this week. It includes quotes from IPI Chair Casey Jones, CAPP, director of parking and transportation, Boise State University and IPI members Dan Mitchell, senior transportation engineer for Los Angeles, Soumya Dey, deputy associate director of the D.C. Department of Transportation; Brandy Stanley, parking service manager of the City of Las Vegas; and Mike Drow, CAPP, senior vice president of technology integration at Standard Parking. It also includeds a video featuring Streetline, Inc. Read and see it here.
Also media related: Yesterday, an op-ed in the New York Times was all about parking. When a Parking Lot is So Much More by Eran Ben-Joseph, PH.D., professor of landscape architecture and urban planning at The Massachuesetts Institute of Technology (MIT). The pull-out quote in the piece was, "It's not just a place for cars. It can be a pretty, vibrant space." See IPI Executive Director Shawn Conrad's blog post for a link to the article and a copy of the letter to the editor that IPI sent as follow-up to thank Dr. Ben-Joseph for increasing visibility for the importance of parking. It also explained that if the expertise of parking professionals was used earlier in the planning process, everyone would benefit.

Green Exhibitor Recognition Program at IPI Expo |
The International Parking Institute is once again highlighting its Green Exhibitor Recognition Program at the 2012 IPI Conference & Expo. This program recognizes companies whose products or services successfully minimize negative effects on the environment, which helps parking facilities become more sustainable.
As sustainability takes root in more communities, more and more customers will seek out green lots and garages. College and university students already demand that their campuses offer more sustainable transit and parking options, and that trend is only expected to grow. Parking facility owners and managers will need to address their environmental practices, and the companies being recognized through this program are instrumental in those efforts.
If you would like for your company to be recognized on the Expo floor and on the floor plan map in the Official Program Guide as a company with GREEN/SUSTAINABLE Products and Services, complete the Sustainability Scorecard and submit to IPI. Entries must be received by April 30, 2012.
IPI's Expo Committee will determine which companies qualify as green exhibitors based on each of their scorecard responses. Companies will be notified whether they have been selected or not, and those awarded will be spotlighted at their booth locations and in the program guide.

Nothing General about these Sessions at the IPI Conference & Expo |
While classified as General Sessions, these two sessions will provide you with industry-specific information that you can take home with you and implement right away to improve your operations.
Tuesday, June 12
The Future of Parking in Cities
Dr. George Hazel, chairman, MRC McLean Hazel
Dr. Hazel will explain global trends and how they will affect on parking in the future in cities. These trends show that socio-economic, technological, environmental, and retailing developments will require parking providers and operators to move from a traditional operational model to one based on retailing principles. This spans geography and culture. The potential implications of these effects are greatly reduced operating costs and the potential for significant new revenue streams. Parking operators also have the opportunity to move from being parking management companies to mobility management companies with even more business potential. Dr. Hazel will illustrate these concepts with best practice examples from around the world.

New ADA Guidelines for Parking |
IPI's Next Webinar: Parking ADA Self Audit
Wednesday, April 25, 2012 at 2:00 P.M. EDT
Thinking of restriping your lot/structure? It's about to get more complicated. New ADA guidelines took effect March 15, 2012 that removed safe harbor clauses of the original 1991 law. That means lots that are striped after March 15 must meet the latest requirements for van accessible space ratios, and "readily achievable" architectural barriers between parking areas and business must be removed. Are you ready for these changes? Join us on this webinar to learn the most common parking ADA mistakes, what items must be fixed to comply with the new guidelines, and how to use a checklist to easily audit your facility and create a realistic plan.
Instructor: Michelle Wendler, AIA, principal, Watry Design, Inc.
$35.00 for IPI Members; $50.00 for Non-Members

Answers to Questions from IPI's Social Media Webinar |
On March 22, Ted Janusz, president, Janus Presentations, educated participants on social media in his webinar "I've Signed up for Facebook, LinkedIn and Twitter. Now what? - Social Networking Demystified." Here is a sample from the Q&A segment.
People have outspoken opinions about parking. How can we censor the negative feedback posted publicly on Facebook and Twitter?
On your Facebook page, hover your cursor in the area of the upper right corner of the comment. A down arrow will appear. Click on the down arrow and a menu of options regarding the comment will become available. Select the appropriate action.
You can't delete other people's tweets on Twitter. You can, however, block people by clicking on their name in the tweet and then, in the resulting pop-up window, clicking on the silhouette icon. From the dropdown menu, choose the "block" option. This person will no longer be allowed on your Twitter page or to tweet you.
IPI members can read the full Q&A Transcript and the archived version of the webinar can be viewed here.
