IPI Board: Moving Forward on Industry Initiatives

IPI Chair Casey Jones, CAPP, and the association's Board of Directors met last week in Orlando, Fla. The Board focused their attention on projects such as Parking Mattersand its efforts to educate leaders in cities and towns across North America about the important role parking has in creating thriving downtowns. Discussions also centered around new professional development initiatives that will assist parking professionals in advancing their career opportunities, special events planned for service and equipment suppliers, industry awards and recognition programs, transportation related research, and preparation for the 2012 IPI Conference & Expo in Phoenix, Ariz., June 10-13.

Held at the same time were meetings of the Professional Development Task Force and the Professional Certification Committee (CAPP), and the two-day seminar, Parking Facility Design, Rehabilitation, and Maintenance.

The next CAPP-sponsored course will be held June 9 - 13 in Phoenix, and will focus on Parking Management Concepts and Practices.

Parking is a Lot Like Breathing

Sig Article CoverThe behind-the-scenes story of the redesign of the award-winning The Parking Professional was prominently featured in the Jan/Feb issue of Signature magazine. Signature is the flagship magazine of Association Media & Publishing and pursues issues that are critical to the association industry, providing a first point of reference for best practices, reports, and applications.

Click here to read the article and see how IPI's new design team came to realize and incorporate into each issue, "Parking is a lot like breathing. It's an everyday part of your life that you don't think much about until you can't do it."

Permits? What Permits?

Feb 2012 coverNearly 25,000 daily parkers use lots and count on the Department of Transportation to provide an accurately enforced and cost-effective approach to parking at the University of Maryland, College Park. Decades ago, the backbone of that system was bumper stickers indicating lot assignment, and while extremely cost effective, it was significantly unfriendly to customers. The desire for portability moved the department to rearview mirror hangtags, which provided immeasurable customer convenience, but created loopholes that were challenging to overcome. When coupled with a desire to reduce the annual cost of the permit order (approximately $80,000) it was imperative that we figure out a new and better way to regulate parking for our customers.

IPI's Next Webinar: Mobile Apps...How do They Apply and is the Time Right for You? - Parking and the Mobile App Convergence

Wednesday, February 22, 2012 at 2:00 P.M. EST

There's an app for this and an app for that! But if you are like most people, getting your Facebook page started is a challenge, as is understanding how to apply all of the available technology to your parking and transportation operations. This webinar, created by IPI's Technology Committee, will provide you information on the various technologies that can improve your operations, help market your facilities, and provide useful services to your customers.

The webinar will specifically discuss the different type of mobile phone apps, and how each might fit with your operating goals, and target customers, helping you determine which type of app you should develop or use in your operation. It will also review the value of data generated from your facility and how data is used by various mobile apps.

Instructors: Mike Drow, CAPP, senior vice president, technology integration, Standard Parking Corporation, and Amie Devero, president, Solutions 4 Cities
